I’m 74 and have ended up with parent’s things and also my son and daughter in law have passed. Guilt to get rid of things! And having lived with parents that went through the 20s, 30s and wartime doing without and having to keep and use what they had it’s been hard to throw away things. Giving away is easy but throwing away is hard. BUT I’m now doing it. Thank you!!!

Congratulations! It must feel good to get rid of things, but I hear you regarding the loss of loved ones. My condolences to you regarding your son and daughter in law. My parents also were children of the 20s and 30s, so I've learned some of their frugal mindset. For example, my mother made quilts from sheets. The two I have aren't quite my aesthetic (one is from fabric scraps from all the clothes of hers and mine she made, so I cherish that aspect, but overall, it's got so much red, my least favorite color, it would be nice to have items that were more my style. I also have a summer-weight quilt she made, again, the sheet not in my exact style, but it's in wonderful condition, and I don't want to get rid of something both sentimental and functional simply because it isn't quite my taste/style. Fortunately, most of my parents' things *are* my taste, so keeping those items is a happy thing for me. But those that I don't have room for is a tough one.

Hi Dawn, I’m a messy too. I was able to easily part with the many coffee mugs. My church has coffee and donuts every Sunday after mass and decided to eliminate the use of styrofoam cups. They asked parishioners if they had extra coffee mugs they wanted donate in order to be more environmental friendly. The best part for me is I still get to use my own mugs as well as enjoying other beautiful mugs. It’s a win win for everyone.

There's something wonderful that can happen when your house is minimal and then you get ill. Simple means others(husbands, kids, other family or friends) can step in for us when we need to rest. It's something everyone needs sometimes, and minimalism makes everything easier for everyone.

Great video!! I decluttered a HUGE flower vase because it was a pain to store when not in use. Consequently, I told my husband not to buy me large quantities of flowers anymore. Of course, this Mother’s Day he bought me his traditional 50 roses again. Instead of buying a vase, I grabbed a white ceramic crock from my “maybe donation” pile and put them all in there. You know what? The roses look way better than they ever did in the clear glass vase!!

Thank you! I've been encouraging my mom to declutter (I'm living with her temporarily). I walked into her laundry room today and nearly screamed with joy! She has been secretly decluttering it and there's a major change! I wish I'd taken a before picture to continue to encourage her later. But I'm so proud of her and it's because of you!! 💝💝💝💝

I would disagree on one thing. I don't think we're inherently messy. I think we're messy because we're overwhelmed. I found myself keeping clean linens on the dining room table because I didn't want to wrestle the clutter to jam them in the closet. Decluttered linen closet = issue disappeared. I think we put off decluttering for several reasons but the 15-min method is so key to getting it done without disrupting life or exhausting ourselves. Thanks for your posts Dawn! Always worth the time to watch and very inspiring. 😊

I so agree with what you said about decluttering "muscles." It can be so hard to let go in the beginning but the more you stick with it, the easier it becomes. Especially as you see the benefits in your own home!

Like most things in life decluttering is a marathon not a sprint. We are all going to have times when we are efficient and times when we are not. It’s all about keeping going and putting one foot in front of the other! 👍🏻😀

You will do well! I am using the 15-min method. Setting timer is essential. It really works and Dawn's so right ... in a few weeks you will see progress. I like to take photos of a room before I start. I think we are too hard on ourselves and don't remember what it really looked like before. Looking back at the photos will make you really see!

I'm SO happy I was lead to your page by another CZcams person I follow. I am a disabled Veteran and Single Mom of a differently abled now teenager and I have struggled with clutter since childhood. My grandparents and mom were "collectors" and I couldn't handle it growing up. I was neat, cleaned all the time and very organized as a young adult. Then I became a mom of a differently abled child and then disabled myself and lost all of what I used to be... neat, minimal and organized. Since I found your page I have been binge watching videos and started to get rid of all the things I used to try and feel "normal" again. It's been a long process, but I'm so happy every time I drop off a trunk or car full of donations at church and fill the garbage can each week when I am able to physically tackle this process. It also is encouraging for the reminders and to keep my faith that God will help me in any season that comes my way. Thank you.

I kept my bundt pans and the 9x13. I got rid of the round cake and pie pans. I love doing bundt cakes. Mix and put in oven and come back 1hr later. I take these to family and church dinners and gifts to friends. I just can't stack those dang round ones and the bundt cakes can be just a pretty as the layered cakes.

Just do like she suggests, set timer for 15 min, pick one area. You'll probably find yourself working long past the timer. I've been on the journey toward minimalism for about a year now. I definitely notice improvement in my stress level, my way of life (not moving stuff constantly out of the way, not looking for every day items for hours on end, etc). You CAN do it. It takes work but you'll see improvement super quickly and I don't regret giving anything away that I gave away, and it's been a constant process with a salvation army pickup once a month. Good luck!

First let me say I'm not an expert at anything! I'm 58 yrs old and this is the first time I have worked a job on an as needed basis...I may work 1 day a week or 5 days a week. I have been married a year and a half...my husband has been in his home 24 years so he has clutter also...I have been working on decluttering since we were married...things are coming along nicely 😊 I am loving it! I know where things are and what we have...still have a basement...2 storage rooms and a garage to do...which is a lot left to do...my point is do a little at a time...setting the timer is a great idea! I use a 30 min hour glass and it is true once you start you will want to work a little longer and do more...then you will be tired of it and stop...just remember to start again another day 😊 you will even redo things you already organized to find the best set up for you...read Marie Kondo that will help...have a keep pile...donate pile...and the unsure pile put in a box and store in another area...if in a few months you don't need anything out of it just donate it...this is just an ongoing process...I am finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel...I will now always be organized...took 58 years and I am loving it! So much easier to clean and you will save money! You will also feel really good about yourself 😊

Well, I'm a homeschooling, homesteading houskeeper, and i LOVE this minimalizing idea!😃 I dont have a lot of time right now at this point in the year, but i have started ANYWAYS by taking one drawer or cabinet at a time. I have already gone through the areas that are in eyesight and have gotta rid of the unessentials and dust collectors. That was fun!!😄 So the baby steps, or "bites" don't leave me feeling left behind, so-to-speak, but on the contrary, i feel a new VICTORY; and at this rate I get to savour the flavour.😉😁 Thank you Dawn!!!😂💟🌼🌸

One question that I have been asking myself is "If this thing was never invented, would I get by without it, or would I try to make some version of it myself?" Obviously that means a great portion of stuff we have would be gone, but it really helps me put things into perspective sometimes. It doesn't mean I get rid of the item, but it does help release me from feeling like I "need" it.

I feel like I have small nick sacks all around the house that the kids have spread around or we've set down from the hurry we're almost always in. I'm most calm when my house is tidy and clean. I'm looking to get pretty minimal with as much as I can, at least in this season of life with 3 small kids. My husband is definitely not minimal (high school t-shirts 20+ years later) so sometimes I give up before I've even started. Glad I found your channel though and excited to go through some videos for motivation.

Hi Dawn. I came across one of your videos yesterday and it really inspired me to start decluttering my apartment.. I consider my self a bit of a hoarder especially with craft everything items and since my apartment is a bit small for everything we own, I feel overwhelmed and frustrated most of the time.. I dread doing laundry every time because Clothes are probably what we have most of especially my kids . Thanks to your video I made the decision to start decluttering my apartment starting with my kids closet.. well I am happy to say I cleaned out half of my sons wardrobe and a lot of my daughters clothes too and it feels amazing to have that extra space. Most important, I feel like now laundry days will be easier on me since there will be less clothes to put away. I still have to work in my closet but I feel really excited to start decluttering it because I know that the end result will be amazing.. looking forward to watching more of ur videos..

No one has objected to this process so I have made small improvements a little at the time. What seemed overwhelming has become manageable. I have a long way to go with her attic and barn. New sub. I feel weighed down literally from things - clothes, shoes, makeup, hair products - ugh! Every night before bed I “tidy up” and it means cleaning brushes and putting things “away” underneath the bathroom cabinets. It’s like a part time job to keep up with it. As much as I want to declutter my makeup, I switch things out and get bored of things. But I long for the days when my makeup fit into one bag and I had one foundation. I can’t even count how many cords we have - my husband gets stressed from clutter but it paralyzes him and he doesn’t even want to deal with piles from years ago. I can’t just dump his stuff, and I figure I need to be the example for my stuff - once he sees a cleaner space I think he’ll want that too.
