I FAILED! Fear Factory. Why you can't recreate their tone.

- I try and fail to recreate Dino's UNOBTANEUM tone.
Tone is in the hands of the player (and the engineer, the mixer, the producer, the mastering engineer, the amp tech mod, the vynyl cutting lathe operator, the console engineers, the partidge in a pear tree).

Dino:
JCM800 modded. Reports differ on the guitar. It was either a 6 string ESP with EMG 81 tuned down (more probable) or an ibanez 7 string guitar (UV7 with passive pickups?)
The metalhead mod consists of a push/pull added gain boost, push/pull added bass boost, added effects loop which was later, 100/50 watt switch, noise gate, and 6550 power tubes. 2 12AX7 preamp tubes are added to the preamp for the gain boost. Noise gate/suppressor.
Super chorus.
Cab: Mesa 4x12 with v30’s.
Colin Richardson produced but was pushed aside and didn’t mix it. Reece and Greg mixed. They quad tracking the guitars and also applying heavy EQ.
We used a 6 string BC Rich virgin with EMG81
Langner style modded JMP Marshall with 2 extra gain stages, bass boost, 2 preamp tunes added and EL34 tubes. Speaker was a Mesa Celestion V30 and sm57.
Boost was Fortin 33 pedal.

I love the Demanufacture story Dino tells. He said he built that tone around Dimebags tone on Vulgar. Years later he told dime that and dime said, "no way! I based reinventing the steel's tone off of yours!". Lmao

FF way ahead of their time...to me it was their sound that eventually gave birth to the so called djent in modern prog..what suck is ppl don't give them the credit and respect they deserve.

@The Violeta Metal Revue Their songs have become much more streamlined lately. Less jumpy stuff which indeed can sound jarring when you're into older metal. Their singer has evolved too. Maybe you've listened to their latest stuff and you still don't like their music and that's fine, but I'd suggest checking them out again.
I always thought of Fear Factory as a lesser version of Ministry and Godflesh, my favourite album is Soul of the New Machine, but their later stuff really did contribute HUGELY to the development of modern metal.

Yep. The same thing happens when I hear my friend playing. It’s instantly percussive/bouncy. It’s hard to be machine like and have groove.
Dino used an ESP 6 string with an EMG 81 on the first 2 Fear Factory and Brujeria albums.

Obsolete was even MORE scooped then Demanufacture from what I can hear when I compared the two of them. Obsolete is by far the album that has defined my guitar playing and sent me back to the drawing board! Sick video dude! I need to listen to some fear factory again!

I wouldn’t say that. Genexus was held in high regard. In my humble opinion I felt it was far superior to Demanufacture. However, Demanufacture was a pinnacle head turning jaw dropper when you think of what was going on in 92.
No. Meshuggah were doing their own thing beforehand.
Demanufacture, Destroy Erase Improve and SYL's City were all released the same year IIRC (1995). It wasn't the first album from any of those guys but still arguably the best.
FWIW there was a huge metal/industrial crossover scene at the time which may well have been a common thread.
FF were an influence on Meshuggah, but they sure as hell didn't 'invent' Meshuggah, c'mon now.
Here's how I think the obsession with 'sensible mids' came about:
- Bedroom players and starter guitarists in the late 90s/early 00s dialling in a tone at home discover that using scooped mids sounds just like the metal records they love.
- Same players start bands but find that they can't hear themselves in rehearsal or live. They then learn that it's because the tone they dialled in at home doesn't translate to live, and they need to dial in mids to cut through in that environment (they learn this either from more experienced players or from forums).
- This leads to a massive backlash against scooping amongst the next generation of guitarists, and a blanket assumption that scooping is always bad in any situation and that mids are the be all and end all.
Because if there are two things that the internet cannot accommodate, it's context and nuance.
That's how I see it anyway, maybe others have different ideas.
I think it’s because of the volume wars. Taking the meat out of the guitars in order to make the perceived volume louder when you slam the ear with ALL THE FREQS.
CIRCLE OF TONE. I think that's definitely a factor, yeh. In my experience that came a little later on, but could easily be a combination of these factors.

Scooping the mids doesn't sound "more like" records at all, it's just the MORE GAIN MORE SOUND thing. Lows and Highs are the extremes of the EQ, so it's easier for the untrained ear to think something sounds better if it makes a more direct impact on perception. but once you get used to it, you need more. It generally goes like this:
"Need to make my sound better"
"Lows make it bigger, highs more clear"
"Need to make my sound better"
"More lows, more highs, yeah"
They progressively make their tone worse, it's obvious for them that guitars on record sound very different, at this point they just want it to sound good as a thing on itself. Problems show up when they start playing in a band. Nobody can hear the guitar with that EQ, so they have to crank up the volume, to the point it gets annoying to everybody else. Professional musicians who "scoop the mix" do it knowing that it's gonna be "fixed" on recording. The producer probably applies filters or increases the mids on other way, but the musician is counting on this.
Scooping the mids is a relative concept. If you put the mids all the way down to zero on a Marshall, you will still have a ton of midrange in your sound. Whereas on some other amp, putting them to eg. 8 / 10 could still be quite scooped-sounding compared to some other amps.
This channel is so much fun. How you don't have at least 10 times as many subscribers is beyond me.

If you've ever listened to Frontline Assembly you'll know where that mix comes from. You're getting industrial guys to mix metal.
I heard FF the first time on the remix EP "Fear is the Mindkiller" mainly because I was already into FLA, and they did that work! So... not surprising that FF got the same guys in for Demanufacture.
The early-mid 90s was a really interesting time. A lot of metal bands were getting truly weird remixes done by industrial & dance producers.
Oh, and FWIW I saw Fear Factory in London (Underworld) in 1995, the Wacken warm-up show pre Demanufacture release. Still one of the best gigs I've ever been to. It was insane!

I think Pissing Razors came closest to obtaining that kind of monstrous Fear Factory guitar tone with their underground classic Cast Down The Plague.

I still can't believe I learned play this song. On the surface it might seem easy. This will work out your speed picking by mach 5 speed it's crazy. I remember for years I tried to recreate the speed. I mean one day I just to started to pick faster. I almost got knocked on my ass because I finally after years I got faster. It took years and years of speed picking alternate picking to get it. I think almost a magical and also steady diet of pantera added to get this speed. Moral of the story fear factory will always be one greatest extreme metal bands ever.

Yep, I remember reading about Dino using the Mesa cab in a guitar magazine during the 90s. I'm sure kt88's were mentioned also because they handle low frequencies well but yeah I get the 6L6's. Solid state tone for attack and precision. A bit brighter than kt88's. I always thought Marshall might have made a Dino "Replica" lol jcm amp. Sadly not. Great to hear the tone on the Genexus album too. I read Dino got the Jcm custom amp out of storage, sampled it straight into his Kemper and used it alongside two other of his favourite amp setups. So it's kind of the first time that tone has resurfaced since the 90s. Got to say the sound on Genexus is absolutely immense.
Type O Negative and Hypocrisy would be two more bands that had/have a very unique sound.

Watching this, it now makes way more sense why modern metal sounds so sterile, lifeless, loud etc. Definately a great argument to made here. Also really explains why 90's records tend to hold up better imo. Demanufacture specificly still sounds better than many modern albums out now
It should be noted that Rhys Fuller and Greg Reely are production wizards who come from the industrial metal band Frontline Assembly. Their ear for a tight, digitally compressed sound is what Fear Factory ultimately wanted and had also done some remixes on the album Fear is the Mindkiller which came out before Demanufacture.
What about Primus? I reckon it might be fun trying to figure out the bass and guitar tones there...

Dino's my solid guitar hero. I mean I have others but amongst them, I had built my foundation on Dino's massive picking technique and I'm proud that I came close to it, and then some, I dare say. Thanks for this video man! So much informative for Dino's fans such as myself! Cheers!

The Demanufacture tone is my holy grail. I've found i get nearish to it with an EVH 5150 III 50w red channel, a Maxon OD808 in front, and then scooped on the amp, through g12t-75 speakers.
Sometimes scooped to hell sounds amazing as you say. Especially on the palm-mutes (which is my favourite thing about Dino's tone). Those ultra punchy, ultra tight palm mutes give me goose bumps to this day.
It's probably my favourite album ever. What's amazing is that in a lot of ways i still think it sounds modern and original now.

Pretty good job. The Demanufacture album was recorded with an EMG 81 equipped ESP guitar. So you had the pickup right. Ibanez was later 90’s.

Great video! Same video with Obsolete tone? Dino made some additional mods to tune down to A. In terms of production it's pretty unique, sounds more heavy than Demanufacture. Christian did also an amazing job on guitar sound for Archtype too. Best guitar tones ever and best band in the world. Period.

I just picked up a vintage Marshall Superlead with the “metalhead” mod. It has an insane amount of gain. I never listened to Fear Factory before but I checked out these early albums and it’s definitely a similar sound my amp has.
Watching this again. Still love it. 🤘🏼 saw them live a few years back with Soilwork. They destroyed the crowd and Dino plays note for note.
I've been in a small spund booth with Dino playing an amazing amp. It's fucking insane to see it that close.
Dino's pedal board has a few tricks on it as well. One that I like is he used to use a TS808 with the overdrive just barely up, tone just barely up and leveled it. The circuit just added something specific to it and that's helped me achieve his tone to a degree. And yes, very scooped.

The production & analogue gear plays a huge part in this for sure - but don't also forget the drums - real drums just have FEEL to them man... it's still impossible to re-create this with samples unfortunately...

the metalhead mod also had a push/pull to add bass to the overall tone. there was a push/pull for gain as well. the metalhead marshalls were really really made places shake to the ground

Love this off-the-cuff, not-too-edited video stuff. Straight to the point with no need to be a cartoon character in order for (straightens tie) "your content to be palatable to consumers." We may not see eye-to-eye on every sonic choice, but that's the good part. Sound more like yourself than just your influences.
Thanks man. IMO the early Ibanez UV777 was one of the best guitars ever designed. SO MUCH R&D went into it. I know Dino used one at one point. I WISH I bought one when it was on sale for $800!

Demanufacture really is "lightning in a bottle". It did capture something special about that band that has never been captured again. I love most of Fear Factory's albums, but THIS was special. However, I could have sworn Dino only used MESA Dual Rectifiers? Never knew he had the classic (but modded) JCM800.
+Dave Lanciani Nah the recto was just about to be released when the album was being recorded. It’s interesting because (I think) the modern metal amp staples like rectos and 5150’s were not out or at least widespread back then.
This is great! Loved Demanufacture. Dino just used Marshall JCM2000 DSL's on the tour for that album. I remember a big piece on him in Total Guitar at the time at Donington, when it was still called Donington MOR in 1996 if I remember rightly :-)

Really enjoyed this video. I’ve definitely shared a lot of these sentiments.
One of the misunderstandings that arose over time regarding mids is that an overdrive pedal like the Tube Screamer boosts the mids and then to re-balance the eq to bring it back down flat you have to scoop the mids on the amp. That’s all. People just boost with overdrive pedals and because of the “more mids” hype not only don’t they bring down the mids to bring the eq down to flat again but they BOOST the mids even more. The result is a boxy muddy mess.
Where did this movement to not scoop mids come from? Also, I think included in the "sensible mids/SM57/V30" nonsense is an anti-EMG sentiment that's entirely ludicrous.

It came from the loudness wars. Making guitars sound like mosquitos frees up the low end to make the mix louder.
Dino's Marshall's also had a mod-built in noise gate in it.

Demanufacture was so fucking tight and the amount of post work on that album was probably crazy as you've identified. Somehow though they managed to put on a pretty convincing version of the thing live. Very impressive

"Sensible mids and gain" actually is a good sound but it isn't the only good sound and if everyone does exactly the same thing they all sound exactly the same and it gets boring.

These people play 1 single note or chug most of the time. You don't need midrange definition to do that.
IN A recording, sure, especially if it's a one guitarist band, but please don't do it live, it's just white noise
You can definitely scoop the only problem is the mix as a whole. Say you're in a live setting and you have 2 guitar players and one of them has the mids scooped. You will not hear them at all. It's ok for studio when you can just layer guitar tracks but you will always need mids in a live setting
This whole channel is about recorded sounds so... There are a ton of things you can do in the studio that make no sense live. I mean, the drums on "Enter Sandman" sound unbelievably killer but they don't build a giant tracking room with all sorts of partitions around the drum kit to do a Metallica show.

On Demanufacture, he had a once-modded JCM800, which was then further modded for Obsolete :) I did a similar hunting for the Demanufacture tone, using an Ibanez promo video from the era where you can hear Dino play on his original rig just by himself. The exact path: LTD SC-607B (EMG 81) -> DI-signal -> OD (Cream Tube) -> JCM800 preamp VST -> Mesa impulse

I believe he also used what's his nuts from Bad Brains' custom cab, and that was the final touch. Allegedly Dino walked down the hill from the studio after a disagreement with Colin, and ended up buying fruit from the gentleman whose name I've forgotten. They bullshitted and buddy told Dino he'd lend him some gear. The legend says that the custom cab is what tied the whole thing together.

Could you approximate the extra gain stages using tube overdrive pedals such as blackstar’s ht range? Also on the subject of black star, they make amps with 6l6s but still have the British to American knob thing (pretty much nothing more than a marketing shill), could maybe get similar results
I've found overdrives/tube pre's tend to make it tighter than the gain stage mods unless the amp has something extra built in to compensate for the extra warmth/flub. I like Blackstar. They get a lot of stick (from people who have not tried them).

to be honest... I wish a lot more Industrial Metal bands took something out of the book of Fear Factory, at least when it comes the extreme flavor of it because a lot of the bands like to pile in synthesizers, and SFX, and really over process, edit, and put to many effects on their guitars and more or less bury or make the heavy, and also metal aspects of it completely disappear and makes you question why a band was formed instead of someone just becoming an Industrial DJ instead... but I feel FF really are one of the many Industrial bands coming out of the 90's who did it right, and in their own way, and yes I know they used synths but they didn't bury the guitar they actually held them aloft and made them more pronounced and more machine like with the drums just tearing through in the back like a machine gun. In all honesty... Fear Factory has a sound, and an aesthetic that is uniquely dark and gritty to them, that newer Industrial groups now can barely even come close to obtaining.
Fear Factory one of the big 4 of Industrial Metal along with Ministry, Godflesh and Rammstein.
When I saw them live recently (demanufacture album live) they had everything running through Axe-Fx racks I don't think it was even miced up, just straight to house.

Not sure if it was brought up, but the first 2 FF albums were done with an ESP M1 Custom with a single EMG 81. He didn't switch to Ibanez until mid 1996 when he got an Ibanez UV7BK with a single Dimarzio bridge pickup. I think obsolete was done with either a UV777 or a custom Ibanez LACS with an EMG 707 prototype pickup.

I thought he used a Mesa Triple (or maybe dual) Rectifier... Was that just for a specific album? Or am I remembering wrong completely? lol I haven't watched through the whole video yet :p . And I saw fear factory in Kansas City at a smaller venue, and man it was powerful. Sometimes in smaller venues people will sound very muddy and unclear. But those guys did GREAT work.
I think rectos were available just after Demanufacture. It’s interesting because it was just on the cusp of the 5150 and Rectos gaining momentum in the modern metal world.

He's right, Wolf Hoffmann used a heavily modded Marshal JCM800 with more tubes and it was 200watts, he used that on the Balls to the Wall album, now that was a fucking killer sound. One of the best recorded guitar sounds ever...
Easy to re-create too, a Peavey 6505 and EMG-81 basically all you need.
I have a 1981 Marshall, JCM 800 2204 that was modded by both Elan Memran (Metalhead Electronics) and Lee Jackson (Metaltronix). It's the real deal.
I can nail the obsolete tone as well off some newer albums but I can't quite nail Demanufacture or Digimortal. (Don't have a PodPro for the Digi tone).
What even are mids?! ;) one of my favourite albums and guitar tones, I've been trying and failing to nail it for 20+ years.
Would love to see you try get the tone from soul of new machine, or the first two strapping young lad or static-x albums.

Dino did NOT have extra outboard equipment like EQ and such. His tone was all in his modded Marshall and used his ESP M1 with a single EMG-81. BTW, the power tubes were 6550's not 6L6's AND he used a set of 10/46 strings tuned to B standard
I always have my little practice amp's gain up to at LEAST 75%... Is this wrong? I adjust my thrash picking technique accordingly; chords/single notes. I noticed if I'm strumming with a lot of emphasis on the root chord, it actually sounds pretty good--- even without a bunch of pre-amp stuff.
Concrete=soul of a new machine/obsolete are perfect. I'll be listening to them in my 80's.

Dude that guitar...sick as fuck. But yeah very tough to replicate their sound, i usually just give up when i get close. Still makes it fun to jam along and build some picking hand strength.

Also, on the subject of production, I had a friend who stressed you should never print effects to the audio chain ( hardware compression, eq etc.),. Looking back I realise he is the problem with modern music: gutless, no risk takers, shit albums out of a fucking production line types who’ve murdered our once great art form
I am about to do a video on putting delays and reverbs IN FRONT of an amp (gasp!). On it's own it sounds rough, in a mix it has balls/excitement. I also picked up some old school Urei EQ's to play with as boosts/color.

I have an old Guitar World magazine with Dino article in it and he said he had 2 of those Marshall JCM 800 heads. One with 6L6 and one with 6550. Apparently they both got stolen at same time.
I've found that if you record with lots of mids from the amp you kinda have to scoop on the board or it'll get really boxy & squishy really fast.
He uses Kempers and Mesa Boogies now, and also uses the Line 6 Flextone and MosValve Power amp . Idk what else he uses.
Please do some doom bands! Windhand, Kyuss, Elder, Pallbearer or Electric Wizard would all make great vids.
I just bought a new fuzz for something of that ilk.
in one of his interviews Dino explained the whole situation about Colin Richardson. Colin wasn't involved in this album, he produced another one which eventually was not published because CR requested FF to sign a contract they didn't like (it was one of these production + management formulas). The album (Concrete) came out decades later, because Colin had rights on it.

Hey man, what about Asphyx "The Rack" or "Last One On Earth" guitar tone? Their guitarist Eric Daniels used following gear on all 1990's Asphyx albums: T.C. Electronic Sustain/Parametric EQ pedal, T.C. Electronic Line Driver/Booster/Distortion pedal, Boss HM-2 (all pedals together, one by one in this order), Ibanez Digital Delay pedal (for solos), Marshall JCM 800 head and standard Marshall cab. I really enjoy the guitar tone on Misery Index's album Traitors. It always seemed pretty old-school to me. That's somewhat modern. So this sound is not completely dead.
I have known Fear Factory since the backyard days, his head was unique and irreplaceable, he had a vintage cab for the longest time

If you remember from the 90s I don't know how old you are I'm 45. There were certain albums by certain bands, that every time they put a new album out a different band would up the ante for everybody else. For example when cowboys from hell came out. Overkill years of decay. Carcass heartwork,Metallica and justice for all. Sepultura chaos a d. And roots. And fear factory demanufacture(in no particular order.. you probably already know the order anyway) was one of those albums that up the ante for everybody else.the sound on that album is a lot better than a lot of bands out today

From what I heard Colin was so pissed that he deleted all the drum tracks and so Greg reely and Rhys fulber had to recreate them electronically. One of the reasons why it took so long to make and got one of the best sounds too. Over scrutinized on top of the concepts that just fell into place.
