As a real life caribean sailor ( and a friend of overkill videos ) i will give you an additional information . The wind in the caribean region is ALWAYS COMING FROM THE EAST .( 90 +-30 degrees )
The easterly winds are also called TRADE WINDS ( or ALIZES - or PASSAT ) because they brought the old sailors easily to the caribean. To get back to europe you have to sail to north america, where the streams are preferably ( but not always ) blowing from the west.
So you will always find runways like rwy 10, 11 or 12 to START AND LAND . Only very few runways in this region are oriented otherwise ( because of the shape of the island ).
I have been living in Martinique for 4 years and the ONLY TIME, the wind came from the west ... was for half an hour when hurricane MARIA drew over the island of DOMINICA , because the rotational component was pointing to the west.
The eastern coastlines are all rough and hardened by the wind for tousands of years ( windward ) , while the westerly coastlines have smooth waters and the finest ( but also delicate ) beaches . Yachts are always sailing the caribean arc on the western side of the islands ( leeward ) . ( For those interested - i have a lot of caribean videos on my channel, also about the hurricane maria ).

The expression "Balls to the Wall" comes from the old days of aviation when the knobs on the engine/prop controls were actually shaped like balls. When asked to hurry or speed up, the pilot would respond by saying, "I've got the balls pushed all the way to the fireWALL." That later got shortened and simply became "Balls to the Wall."

I often get scolded when I use this term at work when are getting slammed busy, they think it’s a sexual thing. I honestly didn’t know the origin myself. lol

@@kilometersbennetdyson2399 I've been scolded for saying "shot his wad" which is an expression my _parents_ used to use! (It doesn't mean what you _think_ it means.) I also got scolded once after a meeting for using the word "snafu" which I thought just meant "ran into a little snag". But no... it's actually an acronym for "Situation Normal, All F*cked Up".
It used to irritate my mom no end when she'd ask me what silverware I wanted with dinner and I'd tell her, "I'll have a fork 'n knife" which she didn't think sounded very pretty, and told me to stop saying it that way. I didn't see anything wrong with it at the time... live and learn I guess! ;-)

Nicely done! I actually land the PC12 there for a living. It's not too common for the winds to favor being able to come around the mountains that way, but when they do..... I love taking advantage flying low and tight through the valley's. Never a dull moment at St Barths!

This was awesome! So funny to hear you getting nervous with the low altitude on the second attempt. This sim is so real at times it gets us all Lol.

This sounds like directions that farmers give you when you're looking for an address in the country (go down the road until you come to a house with a green roof, turn left and go until you see two barns next to each other, etc). LOL!!!
I'll admit, I know want to give this a try in the Twin Otter.

The best takeoff procedure is to climb at Vy until a safe altitude or pattern altitude is reached whichever comes later. If there is an obstacle climb at Vx until the obstacle is cleared than Vy. Great video on St. Barth's

I recommend the Bijan tree mod. It improves the trees all over the world including St Barts. The default trees are way too large in general.

Slightly related, balls out refers to how the governors worked on old steam engines, they were just weighted balls that would move to govern the speed of an engine.

ball shaped grips of the throttles, est 1960s i think, pushing them all the way forward like you said - to the firewall. DC3 and DC6 come to mind.

Fun approach and video! I'll have to give it a try.

  • @RealWorldAviationandGaming9392

Great video, definitely enjoyed, but your can actually land using rwy 10 if needed. Must be the challenge Lol... Most takeoffs and landings are conducted using rwy 10, but of course it really depends on the wind direction...but the real challenge is landing from rwy 10... besides most pilots / ATC will vector you into an airfield at a straight approach, unless that was like a missed approach scenario. Normally Military aircraft conduct pattern turns into an airfield when feasible.

Wouldn't it be easier just to do a right hand pattern as far as for your approach. Or are you just doing it this way for the challenge?

    • @BigDBlue1948
      @BigDBlue1948 Před 2 lety

I've tried it both ways. It really depends on from which side of the island your approaching from.
