A Young Flycatcher Eats A Dragonfly!

  • Blue Dashers, a kind of dragonfly, are abundant at our pond right now. There are scores of males and females perched on Chicory and the chain-link fence surrounding the pond.
    They are packets of protein for any predator willing to grab them.
    This young Black Phoebe (Sayornis nigricas) did just that today. He grabbed a male Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) and beat it against a concrete pipe just south of our house in West Sacramento, CA, USA on 5 July 2024.
    A successful day for the phoebe. Not so good for the dasher.
