The benefits of not having Netflix was that practically everyone was following the same shows at the same time. This let us talk about it the very next day in recess.
I've been thinking about that given how surprisingly unaware some of these kids are with regards to movies and tv shows from before they were born or when they were too young to be watching any of them.
Growing up, we didn't have the ability to pretty much exclusively watch what we wanted to, so we watched what was on. I think that's why we have a much larger movie and tv vocabulary than kids growing up now; it's surprising how few "classics" they have seen because it would've been virtually impossible growing up in the '80s or '90s to avoid those classics, those staples that played constantly. Like Big, or Back to the Future, or Die Hard... any of these movies that aren't necessarily high quality, that didn't win any awards, but were just really fun (the worst versions of which are probably stupid/fun movies like Con Air or Face/Off, the best of them being... well, like the ones I already mentioned: Big, Back to the Future, Die Hard).
When they're confronted with a "Do You Know" from before their time, they're often not confident, whereas I think people from the previous decade would be much more confident because tv exposed us to a lot of stuff that was from the decade before us. Like, I was born in '85 but I'm familiar with older stuff like MASH and Cheers, even though I didn't watch them. But these kids are surprisingly unaware of some of the stuff that we watched growing up. With a few exceptions, largely thanks to Netflix or other streaming sites (Friends being probably the most obvious one, but again here we see how unaware some of them are: I've heard stories about kids around the age of 15-25 asking 25-35 year olds if they've heard of Friends).

I'ma 2000 baby and I knew all of the songs but ren and stimpy, and daria. It kinda felt weird knowing people that grew up in the same time i did still didn't know some of these shows.

As a 2000's kid who spent that decade on Cartoon Network, I was barely familiar with Rugrats besides a few Nicktoons DvD's. Back then I was like "What the hell are these babies doing?" or "Why does that kid's head look like a football?"

Yeah. I kind of miss having only a couple of channels to watch. Back in the day everyone watched the same and that was kind of awesome since it kind of united everyone and you always seem to have something in common. Even if someone wasn't a fan of said show, they often knew it anyway.
Nowadays there's just so much stuff out there, so much that it's impossible to keep up with everything and there's just so many channels and streaming services that you don't have that thing in common with everyone anymore. Not to mention it just takes forever to actually choose what to watch😂

Dang DVDs were better than Netflix! When I was 8, there was DVDs store near my home. Everytime I come back from school, my dad and I go to that store to buy DVDs. It was really fun times. Shopkeepers were very close friend with my dad and they were funny. I loved spending time with them. Because of Netflix, that store had to be closed forever since most people don't buy DVDs anymore 😑

EXACTLY, just like Sesame Street that ended up going bad from being on the air with new episodes for WAY too long now, when it should of stopped a LONG time ago... :( It has dumb technology in it now and everything... they RUINED it being that way now... It doesn't help that most of the classic characters we grew up with like Elmo and the rest of them were replaced and have AWFUL new voice-actors for them now too... :( (Kevin Clash is the ONLY Elmo, and Caroll Spinney (R.I.P.) is the only Big Bird. (What's AWFUL about Big Bird now is that like a year before Caroll died and retired as him, he was replaced by Matt Vogel, the AWFUL new Kermit, who does an AWFUL AWFUL Big Bird, who doesn't even fit or sound right as his voice. T_T (Elmo just isn't the same anymore either with his new voice or puppet either, (he seems less furry then he used to be now and has shorter cheaper fur now too...(I think his original puppet is probably at the Jim Henson Museum along with the others.) (I'm just glad I grew up with the old ones on VHS and stuff back when it was actually good. )
