- Having gone with a post structured frame, the first job was getting the membrane on and some vertical battens ready for the cladding. The cedar is a nice alternative to treated and a great price!

I’m almost at retirement age and keep in contact with Smithsonian Scientists and a Taxidermist that I worked with in Djibouti Africa. I’m a mechanic by trade but a lifelong fan of science. The one second part when his daughter talked about nature is great. I have to build a custom work shed due to my spacing, I’m thinking about cladding my shed with pine. Thanks for this video.

looking great Tim. I built my shed a few years ago and its very intresting how different you have built yours to mine. I opted for a wooden framed floor with deckboard and screwed the side and end frames into the base. If you do plan on installing a window try and get an old PVC window and put the glass into a wooden frame it looks great and much more secure than single glazed.
With the cladding spacing you can just create four inch marks on each end of the shed corners bit like a story pole in brick laying saves messing about with a level or wood spacer.

Hand nailing close to the end, flip the nail over on something hard and hit the nail point with hammer to blunt it and it shouldn't split the end grain when driven in normally
But it's just as quick to pre-drill a hole. If you make a stack of boards and pre-drill all at once, probably quicker!
Love the template, much easier to position! Already made my own, ready to fit them...

Great hide and seek place for your girls! Looking good so far. I built my studio with sip panels and it worked out well. Two sheets of 11mm osb, 4 x 2 easi edge, 50mm Kingspan and moisture barrier as you have done. Then cladding on exterior and plastered the inside.

Subtle detail i did on mine was to rip a board to the overlap you are using, in your case 30 mm and use it on the bottom to kick the bottom board

My only suggestion would be put the window where you had the shute if you needed to do it once, you'll need it twice! Just for ease of moving large materials in and out the shed or for storage just remove a hinged window when needed that's easy enough.

Is there a particular reason you wouldn't put the nail higher up such that the next board overlaps the nail holes to hide them from view / weather?

When you first buy a new nailer, they usually come with a rubber cap... first one I bought I threw it away because I didn’t know that it was for that exact purpose! We all learn sometime!
Hi, great channel and have been watching for a while now. Lot of great information. Could you do a video on which nails you used for your various jobs and a review of the nailers you use. I've been told to use stainless steel with round heads for cladding as the D heads may not hold enough? Again, great set of videos, looking forward to more.
Clipped D head nails hold very well, and certainly enough for cladding IMO. Future video on nailers though. 👍

You could buy one of these HIKOKI 4100400 NOSE CAP FOR NR1890. Got mine from Anglia Tool Centre there were very helpful
I would recommend treating the cedar to retain that beautiful colour. Wish I had on the cedar shingle roof I did, which has now turned grey
Were the fixings for the cedar stainless? I ended up using 50mm stainless screws from screwfix cos I couldn't find any decent nail options.

The nails for the cladding, can they be placed higher up on the featherboard so that the overlap will cover them? or will this compromise strength too much as they're not in center?
It makes the risk of the boards curling or lifting away much higher. By having them a third down you clamp the boards tighter to each other.

Nice work, I have a breeze block shed, is it ok to put foil wrap and then battens and then cladding?
I am slightly confused about the concrete flooring. When you started the project you mounted the base on pillars, which appealed to me as I am about to start a similar build this year and would like to use less concrete for environmental reasons. However you have retrospectively poured a concrete base. What was the thinking in approaching this method instead of creating shuttering and pouring the base before the build, would the pillars not have supported the shed adequately?
Just a change of planned use mid build. The post construction is a good option for a floorless shed and even if you ended up with a slab inside it, then thickness can be a bit less as not structural. As my blacksmithing gear will be in there plus a couple other workbenches I decided that a finished floor was a better option. In retrospect I would likely have shuttered the base and built stud work off, which is more like how the main workshop will be done next month.
What are the corner pieces you have used please? I'm at that stage now deciding how to weather proof gapd from the cladding. Thank you

At least 25mm but I usually do a little bit more.
Nice one. My only thought is that I would have nailed the boards at the top, so the nails are covered by the next board. But that's just me. ;)
Only one nail per board to allow movement, if only at top then the bottom wouldn’t clamp right. 👍

What is the cover strip that your using for any gaps, to cover any joints? You mentioned it in you video ...cover strip but what type?

Looking fab! I'm planning my own 12x10ft shed at the minute and the costs are mounting up, I was going to make it out of 3x2 framing for all sides, floor and roof with 1" ply floor, a bit less for roof, EPDM rubber roofing and overlap cladding but think I'm going to scale back a bit. Looking at that featheredge, it's got a great look and I'd save a few quid going that way.
Is there any reason youve framed this like you have rather than the usual build each wall and screw them all together?
No need for floor this way which was the original plan. Check last video for full explanation. I’d usually go off a slab or timber floor with studwork. 👍
@@TheRestorationCouple watched the previous one a few times now and I saw you weren't going to go for a concrete floor to begin with so it was a agricultural design to start, I've watched a load of shed build videos and they all build each wall individually and then screw together (Colin furze used 4" posts in the corner like yours though)
I like this method and it looks like I'd use a lot less materials but are there any downsides to doing it this way? Or is it just you were going with no solid floor and it just evolved.

Just curious Tim, having recently experienced this myself - have you ever had a complaint from a neighbour about making noise?
Most likely discussed any possible amount of noise and other details with his neighbour before he started the project. Also probably has a good neighbour that is understanding to start with! We are very lucky to have some understanding and friendly neighbours. Others unfortunately not so!

Your gun nailer. I found a compressed air gun nailer was better. Obviously disadvantage is you need a compressor, noise of the compressor when on, but the tools are cheaper and better than cordless ones imo.

Can i do only front of my shed cladding ?
Just bought 3 pieces of 8” cedar beveled lap siding 8 feet long. It cost 110.00 or 4.50 a board foot. You must have 3K in siding here.
£200-300 max all in I think.
I used the widest rough-sawn fence palings I could get. Discard or cut down a few that were too knotty, and it still works out WAY cheaper than "proper" cladding.
What is the purpose of the battening? Could you not just clad on top of the membrane? Or do you need an air gap or something?
His framing method is... interesting... put it that way. Horizontal cladding needs vertical supports at 400-600mm as he said, which his frame doesn't provide. There is a building style that uses battons on top of membrane (probably on top of ply sheathing) which is for the ultimate water-resistant system, especially in places that get lots of condensation or temperature extremes.

150mm featheredge. It’s just UK grown cedar but great stuff. Works out around the same price as treated featheredge or a little less. I picked it up at our local mill, Charltons.

Depends on what cedar but if clear imported stuff then £50 m2 plus probably.

Probably best to 3D print a custom nozzle for the nail gun instead of using hot glue. You can get exactly what you want then
Not a big fan of the unsupported membrane. Air pressure differences are going to destroy that over time, and I'm not sure that butting insulation against it is a great idea either. OSB sheeted studs on a poured base would have made this project so much easier!

Screwed in through battens so hidden screws.
A good tip from Robin Clevett is to secret fix through the edge of the battens into the corner post first, then fix the corner assembly to the building through the face of the battens
It's rather too late to suggest this but ...
Instead of a single door fit a door-and-a-half. Think of an inward opening pair of French doors where one dor is full size and the other about half the width. The half door has shoot bolts and most of the time stays locked shut. However, when you want to get something larger in (or out) the extra width is a real boon.
I saw this on a very large shed on a house in France which otherwise would have had an enormously wide door to get the ride-on mower out, but a very wide door is otherwise a serious inconvenience.
I did exactly this on the second shed I built. So helpful.

Perhaps a silly question but what is the structure/method with the bottom row of cladding to close the gap to keep rodents out?

Why the time lapse
Just a tip for future. You are supposed to put the nail at the top so when you put the new board on top it hides the nail. It also hopefully stops nails from getting rusty (i know you used stainless)
Not usually how you would do featheredge cladding like this. Nail needs to be just above the board below to clamp it tight with one per board. If you only did the top you would likely have gaps opening up below each board.

I'm thinking of going with vertical cladding instead of horizontal as it will save having to have a join due to the 20' length.

How weird. I’ve just watched it (in UK) and only 1 skip-able (Amazon) ad at the beginning - no others appeared so maybe it’s a geography or device issue (I watch on an LG TV using the inbuilt App).
Any video over 8 minutes will now default to mid video ads. I’ll try and turn off for first few weeks, that way it won’t affect subscribers.
Only had two quick ads only lasted a few seconds before I could skip them!!

I wouldn't call it messing about. Doing things yourself is very rewarding, more people should do it. When my neighbours use power tools and such like I'm always wondering what they are making rather than complaining about noise,
