    Not sure why some of these are considered "Forgotten", but they're good games! Regiments, for example, has a DLC on the way. And yeah, Regiments is essentially a massively stripped-down and simplified/limited version of WARNO.

    Advice from another old man, play warno at reduced speed! This will give you the chance to absorb whats going on, setting up tactical advances, deploying smoke cover, using SEAD aircraft to hit AA positions, using smoke on your own tanks when they are targeted by guided missiles, popping vehicles in and out of cover, checking your line of sights, realizing what units are good at what engangement ranges etc. It becomes a new game. It also gives you the muscle memory to play at higher speeds later if you decide to go multi.

    I only knew few of these, so it was a nice list for potential inspirations. Been wondering that there must be some more modern strategy war games out there, but I'd not know what to try. This was helpful, thanks!
    Also feel like commenting a bit about a couple mentioned games... Regiments was really a nice experience! Just funny I've practically never played the map zoomed so close that could see the units like on the video - I was always looking at a large scale map.
    Then Cold Waters... That was almost like a childhood dream coming back alive, except that my main complain is that it's too close to the original Red Storm Rising which I have just already played too much in my life, haha. It was one of the few games I had on Commodore 64 that I really felt being worth playing still decades after the platform officially died and kept returning every now and then over the years. Therefore Cold Waters didn't strike me as hard as it could've, when I finally came across that one.

      @Nakai_the_Wanderer Před měsícem +2

      There are only like 40 people playing the game every evening despite the good reviews (The first Wargame (EE) has the same number of players atm).
      The number of players fell off a cliff right after launch, though it was no particularly high cliff because the player numbers were low from the beginning.
      I think its because there is nothing to do in the game, once you played through the campaign missions (Operations). Those are fairly easy to complete, basically by attack moving your whole army from mission marker to mission marker.
      You hardly have any control over individual units because when you try to do so, it becomes frustrating as the game is not as responsive as WARNO or other Wargame series titles are. your units just clip through buildings, the infantry combat is a mess and there are timers on all missions I played. This somehow contradicts the statement in the video; So no, you can not play the game at your own pace, you are on a timer.
      Yes it is a neat little game but it has no multiplayer, no skirmish and no scenario editor. The selection of units prior to a mission is realistic in some sense but also very limited, which is not good for long term motivation. I bought it at launch, completed the first two operations and never came back, specifically due to the busy work in the game and that aweful timer.

    Good Lord ! You have forgotten one of the best ever highly strategic war games that has been modded so much it is orders of magnitude better than when it was first put out.
    The game is 'PANZER GENERAL II' that later became known as 'OPEN GENERAL' after being modded so much since its release in 1997. There are literally hundreds of Open General campaigns available and the equipment tables have also been massively enlarged by fans to cope with campaigns as diverse as the Boxer rebellion and first world war scenarios. The original games primary feature was a main campaign of 20+ branching scenarios, playing as Germany in the 2nd world war, but there are other campaigns where you can play as many other countries and in many different theatres of war. Superb as a campaign where you gain influence by winning which lets you steadily upgrade your gear, as it becomes historically available and even get prototype stuff early if your wins are especially quick and spectacular.

    Great video, but at 12:28, the word "nukilar" should never come out of your mouth, my dude. It's "NU--CLEAR".
    And a hex and counter suggestion: The Operational Art of War IV. Amazing value for money, with hundreds of scenarios.

    You should do part 2 next, and dont forget to put Steel Armor Blaze of War, its a tank simulator where you can only control the M60 or the T-62, not only that but it offers great interiors too.

    It's a pity (from my perspective) that there are so many decent American Civil War games, as I personally have no interest in that conflict whatsoever. Ditto for China scenarios too.

      Really looking forward to Attack at Dawn Stalingrad, North africa was a nice show of concept, but their next game seems to be the real deal.

    Great review thank you. What about the somewhat dated The Operational Art of War (TOAW)? It first came out in 1998! Followed by modest GUI update in 2004...I remember Chris Crawford's Balance of Power in the 80s. Imagine if we could get someone to author a modern version, using the process of systems dynamics, to create a multi-facetted game with a geo-political, macroeconomic, and a military system that includes three levels: grand strategic, operational, tactical and please use NATO symbols not "toy models") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_Power_(video_game) Ah but to dream... PS I started playing war games with Avalon Hill and Strategy & Tactics Magzine in the 60s &70s)
