Oh my gosh Janet, I watched the Depression Cooking channel for years and cried when she passed away. Her nephew keeps her legacy going. I relate a lot to her growing up similarly, and my parents too ( they grew up during the war in Italy). We currently are in a depression in Canada actually. Ppl are struggling here, life is not as it was anymore. We are back to my childhood days in frugality. What a sweet lady❤ She made recipes I still make taught to me by my mother like using cicoria (dandelion greens).
Flo’s tiny glass cookie jar filled with paperclips was so cute! wow she is fully stocked this little fairy. Freddie melts my heart of course every time. And your experiments are wonderful.
I want to see your recipe for the eyeshadows. Mine involves honey and gum arabica. Maybe yours is easier.
I will be using my own alcohol inks made with Sharpies to dye metals too.
That egg tempera kit floored me! I make my own egg tempera and have painted pieces this ancient way. I love it. The pigments are mixed with egg yolk (skin removed), with vinegar as stabilizer. The yolk as the emulsifier and creates a very long lasting paint over gesso panels. Did you get it??? That was a true find! I would have loved that wow.
Since I injured myself outside, no gardening, potting, or much of anything for a bit for me. All I can do is watch videos and worry about chores and duties piling up. Thank u for these lovely escapes Janet.

I need to learn about nettle compost too. This is my first year with nettles. I planted seeds last year and one tiny plant survived our harsh winter. I cherish it and hope it makes seeds so I can plant more and finally use them.
Dear Jane, I do hope you can rest and recover and soon be out in your garden, meantime I know you will be researching nettle compost and maybe tea and soup too.
I bought a premixes water colour binder because it was my first time, gum Arabic, honey and oil of cloves.
The little egg tempura pallet was absolutely incredible and I know the right person will come along and treasure it.

The Depression cooking channel sounds so interesting. I've been interested in that event forever. There are two WONDERFUL books about the period I'd recommend if you're interested in learning more:
"Out of the Dust" is an award-winning YA book by Karen Hesse, a novel told in (poetry) verse. It's a great story about one young family's experience during the Dust Bowl (that took place at the same time as The Depression)
"The Worst Hard Time, The untold story of those who survived The Great American Dust Bowl" by Timothy Egan; a nonfiction book by a New York Times' journalist. I learned so much about that time period and the reality of living in the Dust Bowl and how far reaching its effects were. Really a good read.
Congrats to Ben on his new digs, that's always such a refresh, moving to a new place. It looks wonderful!!
Fun fact: egg tempra paint is the MOST permanent of all paints (ever tried getting dried egg yolk off something??) that was always on my art quizzes, lol. What a fabulous old find, a treasure. Egg yolk was added as a binding to powered pigment, tempera...and then used on canvases (A. Wyeth era)

So I wasn't familiar with egg tempera paint so I googled it. That was the primary method of painting before 1500 when it was superceded by oil painting. It was made from pigment and binder. The binder was actually egg yolk. Answering the question, "is egg tempera still used today"? It said, "unfortunately, few artists use this medium today. The most notable American artists in recent history using it are Andrew Wyeth, Paul Cadmus, Thomas Hart Benton, and Robert Vickery.
One recipe calls for egg yolk, sterile water, alcohol, and dry pigment. Oh, further info...Egg tempera was used by the early Italian Renaissance artists; Botticelli, Raphael, and Andrew Wyeth. Actually, there is a wealth of information on Google about this...interesting reading.

Linda lovely to see you. How interesting to learn about the egg yolk as a binder, definitely worth an experiment sometime and you can actually buy pre-made egg tempera binder, we have both been researching. The antique tin was so precious, so glad we could see it and I left it behind for just the right person to find.
