Man the untapped potential of a Metroid Prime MP game is actually insane. Prime Hunters was a great example of what could be just on a tiny scale and 20 years ago on a handheld. People forget Prime Hunters had online MP AND in game voice chat on the DS, way ahead of it time for any Nintendo game even today
Couldn't agree more. A new Metroid with the multiplayer aspects of Hunters would be absolutely phenomenal.
A bit pedantic but also relevant note (I'm a physicist if that helps to know): the logo does not look like a black hole but in fact it does resemble a white whole (but pedantically not). The silver portion resembles images/simulations of an accretion disk around a black hole (matter being pulled towards the event horizon). However, this shape isn't physical but an image formed from gravitational lensing of the light from the accretion disk being bent around the black hole due to warped spacetime. We see this less dramatically even with galaxies bending light (you can look up Einstein Rings); a black hole's singularity is not required. If it was a black hole we would not see anything else on the interior of the image as light wouldn't escape the event horizon, making the black hole famously black. Instead, we see a point of light. The mathematical counterpart (ie second solution to the equations) to a black hole is a white hole, with an event horizon that everything inside of must pass out of (instead of becoming trapped inside as with a black hole). Even light isn't fast enough to stay within... which means if there was a light source inside of the event horizon, the white hole would appear to glow (if it's visible light). This would also be a spacetime singularity which would warp spacetime sorta like a black hole would. Therefore, the logo looks a lot like an accretion disk around a luminous white hole.
I'd also caution that white holes are not a part of any scientific theory. Just like you get that pesky plus and minus solution to quadratic equations back in your algebra class, you get multiple solutions all the time in physics. White holes are currently considered a unphysical mathematical figment, though some theorists do play around with those solutions in case we can learn something from them. That also means that not many (if any) people actually know what lensing from a white hole would look like. That said, the structure of a black hole's lensed image is a perfectly fine stand in.
I would really love it if Retro did do the lensing for a white hole and it'd be the first time anyone saw a simulated image of that, just like Interstellar did for black holes (famously a paper was published on that which including all of the visual effect artists for the movie as authors).

Damn Dave went deep into this one. Time travel stuff/paradoxes always excite me. So many potential twists and turns for the story. And that logo indeed looks like a black hole with curved light and event horizon around it

Time travel is cool, but can be very tricky to pull off without a ton of plot holes for the game as well as other games in the series. It’s very intriguing nonetheless.
Yeah... i hope they dont overdo it. Especially since Beyond takes place between the games. It could open plotholes like, why didnt Samus travel back to this time and prevent that from happening and so on. I hope they keep it low and somewhat unimpactful in the greater scheme of the story.
consequential time travel is ok when the story is isolated in one area but when you are in space, it just makes everything accomplished or lost feel pointless. and the worst part is it also wastes world building potential, the entire universe at the writers fingertips to think of something creative but they choose to throw it out the window for a what if story that doesn't add anything at the end of the day.
most of what makes Metroid in particular so classic is how bizar and alien it is, makes you want to know more and feel like you are apart of it.
But when you are in the past, future or alternate present, its just a temporary play to act out, none of it means anything you'll never see it again and anything meaningful can just be taken away at a blink of an eye with no consequences, nothing is concrete so nothing matters.
thats how i feel atleast. hoping the timetravel if there is any is just to visit areas you'd never be able to visit, or use them for puzzles to make the future different for Opening paths ect. which is what i assume they ment when comparing it to the dark world in prime2 to get past obstacles ect. but once you start changing timelines its gunna get stupid

I'm just waiting for someone to make a video that actually call these Mochtroids and acknowledges the time line.

My pet theory is that it’s an alternate universe traversal mechanic. Sylux traveled to an alternate universe with metroids that are more malleable, hence why they’re under his command and don’t look like regular metroids. Samus then has to travel to said universe in order to figure out a way to defeat these bizarro metroids.
Those actually look more akin to "Mochtroids." They're the Space Pirates' attempt at cloning Metroids, resulting in an inferior creature with only 1 brain node, instead of a Metroid's signature 3
What I Believe is. Sylux knows they are not metroids and he would want real ones. So he decides to stole time traveling device from the research base. So, he can fullfil his unknown plan?

I'm excited as hell for Metroid Prime 4 Beyond.
It's fantastic to finally see metroid finally utitilise it's story and lore. It has such a fascinating universe with so many ideas yet none of them ever get any focus.
The time travel theory has more than a kernal of truth to it.
One of the lead developers of the first three MP games, Mike Wikan, conducted a tell-all interview with a CZcams channel called "Kiwi Talks" a couple years back. The interview is well worth the listen, as he went through a lot of fascinating details about the development process of the first three MP games. In it, he said that early on in the development of MP2 Echoes, the team at Retro couldn't decide if they wanted the game to revolve around a light world/dark world mechanic, or a time travel mechanic. Ultimately, Nintendo of Japan told them to go with the light world/dark world concept. Which is what we got in the final game.
The reason why I bring this up is because the portal in the MP4 trailer looks similar in design to the MP2 dark/light portals. I wonder if Retro is now implementing this idea that they've had for a long time now.
Since Samus is still using her Prime 3 ship, I wonder if they're dusting off the whole "bounty hunting side missions" thing they where developing for Prime 3, before scrapping it due to hardware constraints...
I was expecting time travel. This interview is something I recalled. I'm just surprised that they stuck with this, even after restarting the project. Now, what I am wondering is what this planet is. Is this Cylosis?
It's worth noting that Metroid: Other M doesn't mention a duration of time, but six months to a year is a possibility. Samus is so focused on the events of Super Metroid, that it wouldn't make sense to have Beyond to occur after Super.
There are some details I have about Beyond, as well as Sylux, but that's for an upcoming video.

yea, i think sylux is trying to save his planet from federation destruction by using stolen time travel technology, and we will learn of this by following him through time portals he creates.
Thanks for the awesome content, Dave. I fully agree with the theory about time travel according to Kensuke Tanabe's comments at the beginning of the video. I apologize for the long comment but here's my best explanation. The subtitle for this game is Beyond, possibly in reference to dimensions of existence and the black hole in the logo also supports this. The first three dimensions are length, width and height. The 4th dimension is time (which could be a reference to going "beyond" the traditional three dimensions that matter exists within) and the 5th dimension is space (the space-time relationship). Normally, an object in motion travels a over a distance (space) at a certain speed/rate (time). This relationship can be plotted on an x and y axis with x representing time and y representing space. However, according to Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity, when an object passes a black hole's event horizon (which is the point at which nothing can return from) and enters the black hole, the x and y axes are inverted. The object is no longer traveling through space over a given period of time, but instead through time towards a specific point in space (the singularity). The portal seen behind Samus in the trailer could be a worm hole that allowed her to travel back in time to a prehistoric era (which could be why we see a jungle with birds flying around that resemble dinosaurs, specifically pterodactyls, with no signs of industrialized/inhabited areas or technology of any kind). The secret ending at the end of Federation Force shows Sylux using a device to force a metroid egg to hatch (which could be hinting at him having a time machine that allowed him to speed up the life cycle of the metroid egg and force it to hatch). It's been a while, but I think other M takes place a while after Super Metroid, given Samus saying something along the lines of "the memory of the events in zebes turned to legend in the minds of the people" (heavily referencing from memory, its in the cutscenes before going to the bottle ship). So it might be that prime 4 takes place in that time, or there might be some timeline shenanigans at play
Prime 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, so I'm very happy that Prime 4 seems like it will be taking a similar approach with the time travel mechanic (really hoping this actually happens)
I need Metroid prime hunters multiplayer. Maps, hunters, game modes, everything from the DS all updated.
I fantasize with a Metroid game where Samus becomes the Mother Brain And she could control Metroid as part of the mechanic. If you think about it, it would be fair. Samus has some Metroid dna, becoming Mother Brain would be most fitting thing.
I definitely like the idea of just being on one planet and making it huge. We don’t need multiple smaller planets to give the illusion of a big game (like starfield lol)
I honestly hope that the world is like Metroid Prime 1. Especially having a ruins of some sort as well as the a Tallon Overworld type of area which we see in the trailer.
I would like the Metroid prime 2 portal mechanic, but I don’t want the toxic air mechanic.
A time mechanic like Titanfall 2 would be fun. Or like that Portal fan game with a 3rd portal that is for time.
The other thing I don’t want is for the other beams to have ammo. The ammo system works for missiles, but I don’t want to feel restricted to the standard beam.

Would have to go into the future for that to happen first. Also how would that work if the Metroid DNA in Samus in Dread is from the baby that dies in Super Metroid? Too many retcons for that to work
Considering this "secret weapon" is what Sylux is after, which may create a wormhole, similar to how the Leviathans were able to do so beforehand, I think this could lead to a time-traveling plot. We could potentially face phazon once again, bringing more variety of its kind in various types of ecosystems but in an alternate timeline in which phazon has conquered most of the galaxy. Samus would then has to face a corrupted version of herself in battle in this alternate timeline on multiple occasions, similar to Dark Samus in Prime 2, with Sylux somehow controlling her with newfound powers of phazon. It's a far-fetched theory, but it is something exciting to think about if done correctly!
On a side note, I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to see the Direct live, but I know it must've been very exciting when seeing mention of the Galactic Federation in that first part of the trailer. I know it got me very excited just seeing the title of the trailer itself when it was already out hours later. This, Black Ops 6, and Silent Hill 2 are my most anticipated games to date, especially Prime 4 since I've been waiting for this game for years!

In my opinion, prime 2 was not difficult to navigate at all with the dark world. Prime 3 with one way entries, rooms with exact same shapes (when using the map) transportation methods was the worst in terms of getting lost

With time travel, the final scene could even be from the same planet that Samus landed on in the beginning, but from its lush prehistoric past (w/ pterodactyls). This game could be crazy! MP was designed for the, now ancient, Gamecube and look how Remastered's gameplay still holds up. Even MP3 was on Wii. Switch is over 10x more powerful so, graphics aside, more level design ideas are technically feasible now.

Good find on the interview. If they held on to the Dread concept for 15 years, I don't doubt they're sticking with the time shift idea, and perhaps that's why development was restarted? It was too ambitious of an idea for the original devs, so they had to bring it back to retro, which was obviously the right call

Yeah I think we're going to get a combination of MP3s grand scope combined with MP1s more isolated scope by having a time travel mechanic available on one single planet. So the enviroments are gonna change drastically depending on what time you're in, but everything is still gonna be grounded on one single planet like in MP1.
I'm also really hoping for a multiplayer mode. Not because it's necessary but for all the reasons you've mentioned, and also because I really want to see the return of the characters from Hunters. There's huge potential for some really unique multiplayer modes with the Metroid franchise! And it would dramatically increase the replayability of the game!
Prime 2 is my favorite game of all time, if this is prime 2.5...
Sylux also has the potential to be the best vilain in the series if done right.

It wont take place after Super, the X in the dates is just so they dont have to put an exact number. All Prime games are cornered to the pre M2 timeframe so they can use metroids and pirates, this will be the same.
The date doesn't specify what decade. I think the prime games take place a decade before super. That's just my guess
Wished they had save this reveal for the Switch 2 with a much MUCH more polished look due to the new hardware. Knowing how Nintendo can be they are more likely not going to enhance it for the new console hardware next year.

I think we'll have a Metroid Prime Hunters Remake, and then the multiplayer online with that game. It just makes sense to me.
I hypothesize that multiplayer, online especially, is a goal with this game. In their minds, they might believe that a strong online experience may be enough to push Metroid more back into the mainstream.

Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is my favorite Metroid Prime game ever ya it was difficult but I never thought the difficulty was unfair especially compared to Dark Souls games I love Metroid Prime 2 Echoes the most because of its difficulty I hope they don't make Metroid Prime 4 Beyond super easy. I'm sure it'll still be slightly difficult probably just toned down a little from Metroid Prime 2 Echoes difficulty I'm still going to have a blast with Metroid Prime 4 Beyond even if they make the game's difficulty easier than the first two Metroid Prime games.

Nobody is going to probably read this comment. One thing that caught my attention. In the end of FF, we see Sylux hatching a single Metroid egg and in the cutscene of MP4, there are 2 Metroid's? How did Sylux have 2 Metroid's? when he only hatched one? Unless he cloned them!
Those aren't Metroids, if you look closely they are Mochtroids.
Within an hour of the trailer releasing and some analysis I saw the portal in the tree trunk and it had me questioning 🤨, the name beyond and the black hole logo instantly pointing towards a time travel mechanic. I also remembered that tanabe mentioned messing with world changing events like on prime 2 but on a bigger scale, or in this case with time travel.
And can I just say I love that all of us metroid super fans are seeing/remembering this 😊
Edit: If prime 4 is chrono trigger levels of time travel, with multiple eras that would instantly be my favorite Metroid game.

So glad we finally got prime 4 news. Now I'm hoping they remaster prime 2 and 3. Realistically I wish they just remastered the entire trilogy. It makes perfect sense if they remastered prime 1 why not prime 2 and 3 especially people new to the Metroid prime series it makes sense to remaster those games for new and old players to experience while we wait on prime 4.
I know the game is over a year away and this is a little nitpick but the charge beam seemed to me to not have the same kick to it as previous games. Other than that, can’t wait for it.

What bothers me is that the origin of Metroid prime is still mysterious and unanswered. I find the events that occurred on Tallon IV to be the most interesting and I wanted more closure with phazon and Metroid prime itself.
I'm a bit sceptical on time travel, since I'm afraid of permanent alternate timeline shenanigans (Zelda has thoroughly gotten me sick of them), but if it pulled off well it could be awesome. Would also be an indication of good things to come imo, since it would break the prime series out of the time window between NES and II which I feel like has gotten stale. Granted, this one still has space pirates, metroid-based lifeforms and Samus' original power suit design, but... Babysteps, right? xD
More than likely this will be my first Metroid Prime game to play 😮…. I’ll have to try the older ones if/when Switch 2 is backwards compatible.
If they do end up going with time traveler I really hope it ends up like what they did with ocarina of time. The more I think about it the more it fits in with a metroid game.
Metroid Prime 2 is definitely the hardest of the 3. I did a minimalist (glitchless, trickless, no unnecessary upgrades) run of all 3, but 2 was the only one I couldn’t finish on veteran. I managed 1 on hypermode and 3 on veteran.
Can you imagine Metroid 4 Beating infinite on the multiplayer aspect? Would say a lot about our society 😎

Honestly, I think Sylux will have a sympathetic story that will be shown through the time traveling. I think Sylux was experimented on to be a controllable Samus clone
(hence his similarities) by the Galactic Federation but he escaped, & that he steals the Metroid as he knows of the Federation's corruption and he feels for it as they would likely experiment on it as well. It's likely his Shock Coil is derived from experiments with Metroids. I think Sylux is stealing a time travel device to save his planet from the Federation, and we will follow him through time portals and learn of this. Then we will get a bait and switch for the big bad being some sort of experimental bioweapon by the Federation that Sylux is trying to take down to save his planet.
If Mutliplayer comes. Other hunters should be playable. Lime Trace The sniper :D

I thing the trailer definitely shows the very beginning of the game and everything is falling apart and samus will likely be defeated by sylux and the story will be about how can samus prevent the invasion of the facility or the metroid controlled by Sylux by travelling through different timelines. If there is multiplayer hopefully it will be co-op missions like federation force rather then generic death match modes (say what you like about federation force but the online co-op was fun along with the blast ball side game)!

I am curious how the story will manage causality. Like in MP2, when you changed something in Dark Aether, something would happen in the overworld, but time travel can get really complex with changing everything. I think it'll make the world exploration so vast that no two gameplays will be the same.

Prime is no longer a prequel this is the furthest in the timeline even past Dread I'm almost certain of it, the first thing they showed in the trailer was the date 20x9 they pointed it out for that reason.

I don't believe the game will have time travel. Plus it is impossible to go back in time to change the future in your original time line because you are stepping into a new time line / dimension.
