      I think Seri is ultimately attempting to control the world.
      But rather than armies and wars its the long con of controlling how magic is developed and who knows what stuff so in controlling info she can manipulate humanity down the path she wants that leaves them under her in the end.

      Yeah, I think Serie in truth is just as much a softie as Frieren is. Frieren says "It was a mere 10-year journey." Serie says "she was just a pupil I trained on a whim." What has happened to Frieren with Himmel has probably happened over and over and over again for Serie. She clearly cared a lot for Flamme, and she clearly cares a lot for Lernen, but they will grow old and die, and leave her behind. So she masks that pain behind a facade of smugness and disinterest.

      We don't know how much serie is compressing her mana though. As a proud warrior mage I don't think she suppresses that much. Its just that she probably have so much time that she decides to try it out or that she do it because she is still mourning for flamme.
      Serie mana is already ridiculously big, and if she suppressed it to Frieren's level it would be quite ridiculous.

    I took Frieren/Fern's argument differently. I don't think Frieren particularly wants Fern to buy a new staff. She, in all her emotional immaturity, didn't perceive Fern's emotional connection to it, and just stated that it would be more efficient to just replace the staff than get it repaired, like some male Engineer not understanding his wife's emotions. Fern got really mad, stormed off, and only afterwards did Frieren realize her mistake, and then went on a journey to get the staff repaired.

  • @SilverCrow0101

    I see it that Serie is disappointed at her students lifespan. To see Lernen be reaching, if not be similar to the demon king in detecting mana, only to realize that Lernen only has a few years left, it'd be truly disappointing. Imagine how many great students she has had to see die before her, maybe she wasn't so cynical at first, but over time, she developed misanthropy as a coping mechanism.
    I mean, she lies almost all the time, not understanding Flamme even though she tells Frieren what Flamme's dream was all the while remembering her very vividly.
    Saying that suppressing Mana is a waste of time even though she does it herself, she's probably the one who taught Flamme the technique.
    She shielded Sense from all responsibility by blaming Frieren
    Even asked Lernen's opinion for taking over his test
    The only person she most likely is truly disappointed to is Frieren. For 1000 years Frieren stayed in the cabin in the woods, doing almost nothing. She's only been active for 80 years, she only started collecting spells when Himmel complimented her spells.
    Serie is like the grandma with a 50 year old grandchild who did almost nothing in life and is just starting to open up a shop. Of course it's Frieren's life, she can live however she wants, but Serie doesn't have to be happy about it.

      its more like she is dissapointed in frieren for not meeting her expectations as a mage, she knows frieren has a lot of potential and she is quite disapproving of how frieren spends her time, collecting spells rather than going under Serie's wings and learn from her. Thats what i think tho.

      Serei is pragmatic to a fault and sees magic as a tool. Frieren kinda wasted a good chunk of time developing her mana control and suppression to counter a specific threat. Their views on magic are also different.

  • @MedskiPurnamski
    @MedskiPurnamski Před 2 měsíci +2

    It is so interesting to see how Serie's philosophy in magic differs from Frieren, and no matter how powerful Serie is she wasn't the one who managed to defeat the Demon King and that was something that Flamme already foresaw. I think it's because Frieren sees magic as something practical, while Serie sees it in a more academic way. She thinks Frieren could have been a lot more powerful if she didn't dedicate most of her life suppressing her mana, but it was a practical choice to kill the Demon King. Serie look down on humans because no matter how much potential they have, individually they will never achieve the same level of knowledge and power as an elf who can live for centuries. But Frieren understands thanks to Flamme's teachings, her friends, and now Fern, that it's more important for humans to leave a legacy so that their next generations will surpass the generations before them, and ultimately they will thrive while elves like her will just disappear into the background.

      Frieren is not graded on her power but her realized potential. Remember that your mana in this system is based on the life experiences of the mage/demon but Frieren is an immortal Elf so any elf mage would be powerful. Frieren spent so much time on mana concealing above all else that she never developed the powers that a mage of her lifespan of 1000 years would have done. I mean Frieren doesn't even have mastery of mage fundamentals because of lack of interest. I think Serie believes that if Frieren actually cared about being the best, Frieren would have surpassed Serie already so that is a failure of the student.

    • @mfgillia7606
      @mfgillia7606 Před 2 měsíci

      @@Redpoppy80 If it was based on realized potential from Serie's war-focused perspective then it's hard to see how Frieren doesn't objectively qualify as a first class mage - she's killed more demons than anyone and was the one mage most responsible for taking down the demon King.
      Feats that would rank Frieren even above the more powerful and much older Serie.

    • @isaiahsaw
      @isaiahsaw Před 2 měsíci

      While everyone made very valid points, I also am mindful that Serie is just a bag of contradictions. While she chastises Flamme's last will, she also did went on to set up the largest magic association. As for failing Frieren, as much as Serie and her have bad blood, I think both of them could agree that Frieren doesn't need to be a first-class mage. Frieren just can't visualise herself as one and Serie has already more or less acknowledge her as beyond first-class in the beginning of the episode when she called Frieren the anomaly of the exams. And because both of them are practically immortal at this point, they also probably see the ranking system as fleeting, now only necessary for a political reason i.e. crossing into the north. As much as Serie thinks Frieren is a failure, she still gives her a chance to pass. I think that in itself is an acknowledgement of Frieren.

    • @adamwu4565
      @adamwu4565 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Serie was looking for two things. A certain level of power, and a certain attitude towards the practice of magic. Frieren has more than enough power, but her attitude towards magic is not one that Serie approves of.
      Plus Serie is being petty and petulant, and it absolutely IS unfair.
      But we also should keep in mind that Frieren never wanted to be a First Class Mage in the first place. She originally wasn’t even going to enter the exam, and was suggesting that Fern enter the exam on her own. She only entered when Fern expressed doubts in her own ability to pass, so she basically entered solely to provide moral support to Fern.
