I think Viola Davis was excellent in the Netflix movie all the actors were great. Saw the movie a couple days ago you must see it!

Viola Davis certainly did Ma Rainey's character justice.
I think Monique played her well also they both played the role with excellence but I prefer Monique because ma Rainey was a plus sized woman so It took me a while to adjust to Viola Davis playing her.
Monique and Viola are not on the same level though & that's facts, regardless of weight. Viola knows how to A.C.T!

@Cee Cee: The movie is from a play written by a Pulitzer Prize winning playright. Just enjoy it and Ma Rainey's music and part in history.

I didn't know this was a play, but loved the Netflix movie. We live and celebrate learning EVERYDAY. 😮 in 1930 , so Paramount went bankrupt during the depression, well well well. Enjoyed this short teaching session.
@@j.parrish385 I haven't seen it yet, but I have been listening to the original songs on CZcams for the past week. First time I heard them, and they are awesome. The copycat rock & roll songs by white artists in the late sixties when Ma's songs were re-released are obvious.

I'm born and raised in Columbus, Ga. Altough I no longer live there.Growing up I never new about so much of the history in our town. I looked at the movie and really like it. The next time I visit I'm going to try and tour the Ma Rainey house. Thanks for the information.

One of my musical hero's, I'm so happy she's getting the recognition she has always deserved.
I loved the story when I read it back in 1989. My best friend & I met August Wilson at the Yale Reparatory Theatre after watching 'The Piano Lesson'. I feel very fortunate to have experienced such a great man & playwright.

Ma Rainy should have been taught back in the day. It took 2020 for a movie. I enjoyed watching this movie and didn't want it to end. The whole cast was spectacular.
for the past few days I came across ma baileys music while saving ragtime songs and then I came across her music it was so beautiful I started saving her music on CZcams right now I have several of her songs saved in titled blues and the blues box oh yeah also yesterday that's how I came across this video watched and listened to every word

Ending was a bit abrupt but I love that this was done! The Netflix film was wonderful but it did not dig deep into Ma Rainey's life like Queen Latifah's "Bessie" did for Bessie Smith. These sorts of features are definitely needed to tell more about Ma Rainey and keep her legecy alive. Thanks for this!
That’s because it was based on the play by August Wilson and wasn’t exactly meant to be like a biopic, for example.

Never heard of her til this movie talk.
Didn't care 4 the movie, it BARELY covered her life. All I saw was her liking the girl and throwing a fit over the one performance! There was so much to her other than what was portrayed. Plus she was very much married for decades
That’s because it wasn’t essentially about her life. It was a day in the life and it essentially covered a day of her recording this particular song “black bottom”. Originally was a play written by August Wilson

Who would paint Ma Rainey's piano GREEN? Thank God that antique could still be restored!
We had a piano from around that time at church for years and it was that light green color. I had my mom’s doll furniture that was that color too (she was born in the 1920s). A lot of stuff like brickwork was painted over too. Maybe they thought it looked more “up to date” for the time?
U know! I've noticed all the white notable historical houses of history. Was restored and is still there today. But black historical spaces are demolished or have to be fought to save. 🤔

Traveling pastors and important people went through her business and house. Historical site the county don't care they want to demolish it. But the White House's Uptown from the 20s well-maintained
They want to destroy our rich history to keep us down. That's why I love the older generation, they remember stuff and tell us history so we can share it and pass it on.
Ma Rainey was born in Seale,Alabama and moved to Columbus,Georgia at an early age making Columbus her home...I know to be fact, THANK you from all of us.

I hate how they depicted her make up! Clearly wasn’t correct
I didn't like her makeup either, they said she was known for heavy perspiration outbreaks. I guess they wanted her makeup to looked maladjusted due to the sweat. Since they only had a few pictures of Ma anyway, they could've made her look more easier on the eyes!
It's bc she's used to wear so much make-up ,and performing with little to no air will make your make-up smudge like that...

It was metaphoric, her makeup. The hot weather, poor air quality, Her needing a pepsi, her sweating it a resemblance of a economic self preservation struggle of her artistic talents. If you gonna steal my work, you're going to respect me while you're doing it. e.g. signing of the contract & having the ability to make millions over decades off of the publishing rights.

I read their adopted son Danny was a minstrel stepper and he performed with Ma and Pa Rainey. Does anyone know what happened to him? I read he had relations with Bessi smith (Ma Rainey’s secret lover) but I couldn’t find anything else about him.
I thought they were gonna have the movie start off with her childhood upbringing up until her success and even her death, I didnt like the fact that they just based it on her recording that one song, it should've had more depth into her life

Sorry, but this movie wasnt good. I was left feeling like where is the rest. Who is she what happened after the end scene where she go and what did she do as well. Too many questions. Not much background history semi funny dry scenes. Hated all the BLASPHEMY. No amount of money is worth speaking in such a manner!!! Esp while fighting a battle like cancer. Smh. Denzel...u can do better. Takes more than superstar faces to make a movie great. The documentaries that came surrounding this movie and the bonus behind the scenes clips were more interesting in my opinion. Idk maybe it's just me. Viola can play any part tho. She something special when she takes on a character.

It was just a movie about when the cut black bottom in studio. Literally a movie about the studio sesssion. I was lost and feeling incomplete until I realize it wasn’t an autobiographical or an if that.
The film was brilliantly done! Amazing cast, amazing actors and top notch directing. Go do your research before you start badmouthing the film. Don't ever speak until you know what you are talking about, now take a seat and learn how to appreciate the arts

Next time you might want to make it clear what Columbus you're talking about. You are not telling this story very well. I'm from Ohio, I thought this might be Columbus Ohio.
You can tell by the narrator's accent that it is not Columbus , Ohio.
Also she was from the south so she couldnt have been talking about Ohio

The movie was not the story of her life it was a day in the life. The movie is based on a play by August Wilson
It's an interpretation of an event that included Ma Rainey; therefore, the setting as well as characters, including Chadwick's character are exaggerated or unrealistic. Wilson's play is based on the song and how he envisioned the events to occur. The film simply tweaked and exaggerated details of the play not her life.
I like that her story was told but Viola Davis Looked Nothing like Ma. Violas skin is much darker and the makeup was Horrible! I wish Hollywood would hire New Actors that look closer to the character not pick someone because they got an award and shes black.
That’s unrealistic. They’re not always going to find an actor who resembles the actual person - that’s not how making movies work.

@@ninacold Exactly. I think it's because Hollywood never gets tired of trying to make Viola Davis play "ugly" characters. Not that Ma Rainey was ugly, but stuff like the gold teeth and trying to make her overweight when she clearly isn't is just ridiculous

@@ninacold I don't think any if them really resemble her, but on the topic of Queen Latifah, she did a movie called Bessie where Monique played Ma Rainey, so maybe her? My thing is, why not just hire some unknown actor that resembles and maybe even sings like them. It would be much cheaper, for 10x the benefits. This is why I think Hollywood has bad intentions when it comes to stuff like this.
The actors were excellent. Viola Davis' makeup was terrible they made that beautiful Queen look like a monster. I was hoping they told Ma Rainey's story from birth to death. In my opinion that would have been better.

So am I the only one who thought that movie wasn’t good at all? It told us nothing about her life or anything. It was more about Levee then Ma Rainey...they did a horrible job on that movie
Lol I get it but I think they should've chosen another name for the project. That way folks wouldn't mistake the movie as her autobiography but as an interpretation of an event. The movie was good but none of the events line up according to the play let alone her life, which may have caused confusion.

The event also according to the play and research was significant because it provided historical insight to factors such as racism, and the illusion that the North provided more opportunities and freedom than the South post migration. The event also marked the end of her career and change in music as well as culture as the world shifted from the blues to an upbeat Jazz movement, which Levee represents. All in all there are many historical and pivotal aspects and events in the film outside of Ma Rainey. All of August Wilson's plays go through time periods in the 19th century through the vision of African Americans, Ma Rainey is one of those significant people.
