The Biggest FPS Game You've Never Heard Of - CrossFire

  • When you hear the words “most popular FPS game”, what comes to mind? Halo, Call of Duty, CS:GO, or VALORANT? Back when I started playing online video games with my friends, there was one thing we all wanted to play: shooters.
Most of us couldn’t afford Xbox Live or high-end gaming PCs, but thankfully, we were growing up at a time when free-to-play online shooters that didn’t require a beefy rig were being churned out left-right, and center.
Among the games we played, one title would go on to be picked up by one of the largest video game publishers in the world, who envisioned an esports scene that could rival that of CS:GO. Unfortunately, some dreams are a little too big, and though the game ended up surviving for a decade longer than most had anticipated, it ended up flopping hard.
    This, is CrossFire.

This game was so popular due to it being f2p and that the system requirements were quite low so internet shops in Asia could install them and attract kids who grew up playing this game.

The game debuted way back in 2007, it was basically marketed as a F2P alternative to Counter-Strike and it's widely played and continues to get supported till this day especially in the eSports scene which is seriously impressive.

As a brazilian, I can asure that this game used to be huge in here. I spent 5 years of my life play this game, and watching this gave me a mixed fellings of good sensations remembering how good it was to get kills and make beatiful plays. @furiomorius7962 Před rokem +8

I would agree with you if it was 2007 to maybe 2015 version. CrossFire 2.0 is plagued with terrible matches, unbalanced gameplay, god awful map design, netcode issue, etc. GP shop weapons are obsolete. Sure, there is some good stuff in the Mileage shop, but it's still nothing compared to VIP/ZP weapons. Back then, I used to rock with an M16 and Desert Eagle against ZP players and would get called a cheater. Now I need to farm for craft/upgrade for my weapons or buy shit in the black market for coupons to go toe to toe with ZP players. Luckily, I completed an event that earned me an M4A1 Proto; it's overpowered as the VIP/ZP M4s. There's even a character than could cancel sniper recoil by kicking.
The CrossFire that we used to know is not there anymore. I miss the time when I could just login and play the game. I fucking hate farming for shit just to get even; I feel miserable playing after coming back 1 month ago. There are far better free-to-play first-person shooters out in the market than this. Since Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is now also free-to-play, there's no point in coming back to CrossFire anymore. Unless you just like its aesthetics.

As a german "allmost-pro" in crossfire, let me tell you about some stuff we had to go trough:
    1. When Crossfire Europe wasnt released, we had to play on "NA", but we couldnt crouch because the keyboard layouts were programmed so badly, we had to switch to US-Layout, switch the keyboard settings ingame and then switch back.
    2. 1000hz polling rate isnt supported, or at least lets your mouse go up and down while aiming left-right.
    3. You could click your mouswheel on the scope/right-click button in settings menu, when you played AWM (AWP in csgo) or any other sniper, you could just press shoot button and instantly quickscoped which is btw. very strong in csgo because there is no cooldown of precision.
    4. China-Walk was a technique of walking sideways (key A/D) and fastly pressing forward/backward(w/s). It made you faster and people couldnt hear your steps (i think it was possible to switch ws / ad arround.
    5. Bunnyhopping was really easy, it was the fastest way to go from A->B and also didnt make noice if done right.
    6. you could "high-jump" onto things by hitting jump right before landing, experienced players could easily do it while running whout having to stand infront of the "target".
    7. You could glitch into boxes by standing on a corner of a box and slightly fastly going forward/backward and left/right... at some point you just sank into the crate and in some maps this allowed you to go to extremely weird places.
    8. Crossfire comp scene started by "forbidding" BP (Bulletproof helmet and vest) which allowed you to dodge a headshot with many weapons (m4), later they allowed to because the m4 was a little too strong, problem is that BP is a real money exclusive, or at least back in the days hard to get.
    9. If you aim at a player trough a smoke, the name pops up in red on your crosshair, making it easy to get kills trough smokes.
    10. you could avoid fall damage by bunnyhopping.
    11. walking of an elevation totally didnt affect your precision, making it very easy to hit insane 360° "Dropshots". (Jumpshots were a little harder, but way easier than csgo f.e.)
    12. Many edges let you aim and shoot trough them, this allowed you to kill enemies trough whole buildings with a little timing.
    13. there was a error message when: Glitching into boxes, having unstable internet, sometimes random that made your game crash or at least kick you out of the game.
Made it very unplayable at some times.

One side has a the ability to turn invisible when they stay still and semi-transparent when they move; their objective is to plant a bomb. The other side has guns and has to defend 2 sites, using sight and sound to kill the "Ghosts." Game play was tense. Great fun until a bunch of people started hacking. The aesthetic, speedy gameplay, and non-english community has fsr become my favorite aspects of Korean-made F2P shooter games. I came to this video after a conversation with a friend. And while it is a shame that this game isn't very playable in the US it seems, I'd still love to give it another try after all these years to see if it's held up in any regard, or if it's not worth it in the US.

Combat arms was the goat of the f2p shooters. I wish they reverted to their old state

I still remember when my dad first showed the game to me way back in like 2010-2011 on his laptop at the time. I was so hooked. God the game was addicting and so much fun. The memories omg.

I'm from Germany and this was my first fps game I could play on my crappy laptop. Probably in 2010 or so. I remember my brother, friends and me playing ghost mode or simple SnD. But even Zombie mode, Mutation mode, TDM... The modes were just fun and creative. And I can agree to the killstreak sounds being soooo satisfying. I even downloaded it years later just for the nostalgia. Sadly because of the switch to Crossfire West I lost my account and various now unobtainable weapons. But still it leaves so many good memories

My god I played this wayyyy more than any counter strike. TDM, Mutation Mode, Zombie Mode... you name it, never knew it was this big, but glad it is, and it's still kicking.
