  • A full cycle clip of the recently restored Speed Queen A78F washer and 166F electric dryer!
Both the washer and dryer were assembled during the Summer of Love in 1967 in Rippon, WI, and were lovingly used in a cabin in the upper portion of Michigan for decades until they made the trek to Iowa in the fall of 2021. The dryer was restored with new seals, rollers, belts, and a deep cleaning during the early spring of 2022. The washer required donor parts from another washer and was completely torn down and restored earlier this year.
The washer has been coined a 'solenoid-drive' Speed Queen by appliance collectors as it uses two large solenoids to shift for agitation and spin, which were used up until 1970 when Speed Queen changed over to a reversing motor arrangement for home-use washers that provided a brake to meet UL standards that went into affect in 1971. This washer is the best of both worlds as it has all of the characteristics of a 1950's and early 60's Beam-SQ but was the first washer model built on the new platform with a removable front and revised console that was used in various forms for the solid tubs up until 1980.
