K-pop supergroup BTS has made it official that all seven members plan to go to the military to fulfill their mandatory service.
The first one to do so will be Jin.
The latest decision puts an end to years of debate over a possible exemption for the group.
Shin Se-byuck reports.
K-pop sensation BTS will not be able to perform with its full seven-member lineup for the next few years,... as members of the supergroup are set to undertake military service.
The oldest member Jin, aged 29, will be first.
According to the band's management group Hybe, Jin plans to start his service as early as December.
The others will follow suit in the coming years.
In South Korea, all able-bodied men must serve in the army for around two years by the time they are 28 years old.
However, the seven members do have the opportunity to put off starting their military service.
In 2020, South Korea's parliament passed a bill allowing K-pop stars, namely those who “excel in popular culture and art”, to defer their duties until the age of 30.
The issue has not been without controversy though, with heated debates on whether to exempt the band completely.
With the boyband's huge success on the global stage, some lawmakers suggested granting an exemption so they could keep performing.
The move has some precedent,... with a number of globally-recognized prominent athletes, like Olympic medalists, and artists being given dispensation,... however, that has not yet been the case for pop culture figures.
The latest announcement ends years of debate.
Jin, who will turn 30 this December, has already canceled his request for a deferment.
Following their service commitment, BTS is expected to reconvene as a group again around 2025.
A few months ago, however, South Korea's defense minister hinted at the possibility of the group being able to perform while enlisted... saying there would be a way to give them a chance to practice and perform together.
Unless that happens, we can expect a quiet few years from the K-pop superstars.

Army mom...Jin in my heart is my adopted son from a different world....will continue to do for him what I have been doing...that's praying daily for him! I truly believe that God will take care of Jin ... I meanwhile will wait until he returns...Jin is hands down...no question...my all time favorite superstar, and nothing will change that. My love/ support for him is unconditional and unchangeable!💜🇺🇲 I will also be praying for the other guys when they enlist. I wish they could all do it at the same time. A great power move by BTS. No matter how much we want them to be together there should be NO performances while they serve. They must say no to this government who have been constantly using them as free labour for years. Promoting tourism, promoting SK products and businesses, promoting the world cup and world expo bids, promoting the Korean language, the list goes on. And as for their work with UNICEF and speaking at the UN and the Whitehouse, who else has done that? Anyway, BTS have set their own terms now and we support them 100%. 💜

Very well said. BTS was given a mandate to teach youth not to bully and to "love yourself" so you are not bullied. Their government has been bullying them for many years. Yet, loving their country, they have responded with kindness and respect.

I don't want to them to perform while they are doing their military service. They don't have to be doing that to keep army happy. We will happily wait for them to finish their service even years because i know they will come back. I love them and want them to be happy and have less pressures not more.
I have been an ARMY since 2014 and I’ve never been to BTS concerts. I hope to go to their concert in 2025! I hope they come back safe and happy after the military service! I have never seen them in person but I’m not giving up! I’ve been going through a lot of bullying since 12 years old, but BTS was a great support to me. I am Korean ARMY and whenever I got bullied BTS have always helped me with their amazing music and supports. They’re Korean lyrics inspired me so much. I have lost respect for the Korean Government and politicians after seeing all the shenanigans, they’ve been going through to try not to make a decision… Didn’t something happened like this with the Sewol Fairy? The military manpower administrative needs to leave BTS alone. From the wording they gave they will be forcing BTS to perform during their military enlistment. They've done it to other idol groups (TVXQ, bigbang, shinee, super junior, etc) before but with BTS it will be a million times worst especially since they said they might consider them to do oversea performances. The worst part is that since they are in the military they won't get paid and most likely can't refuse to take on the engagements the military schedules for them. SK government is so clearly using BTS to their advantage because of the massive fandom ARMY. The government never has the conviction to give the group the exemption to military service inspite of all the benefits koreans got from BTS. Naturally, the members would voluntarily go to military, that's how they are. Setting yet again an example to the korean people. But as an Army, I feel sad not to see them until 2025. The government used them without remorse at all. It’s very unfair for BTS that believed politicians word.! They only took what they wanted from BTS knowing that they wouldn’t do nothing in return ; just taking the glory and influence that BTS have in the world……..BTS wanted to keep going as a group and not going to the military. I’m so proud of these seven young men. They have worked so hard and against all odds they succeeded. They have brought so much hope and comfort to the world. Even with their immense success they remain humble. I am so glad that they made this decision on their own terms rather than leave their future in the hands of government officials who only see them as a cash cow. They have been used enough. We will continue to support the boys and we will be waiting for their return with open arms!

I have only been an Army for a short while from last year but I live and breathe BTS but from the way the wording was in the press release from Hybe they will simply serve their time and not perform until they are all back together and I think this is the fair thing to do… after all why should they serve military and perform at the same time… the government can’t have it both ways they should choose one or the other

It's said that BTS is gonna come back strong in 2025. For that to be possible they all have to enlist and be done by 2025. Jk is the youngest. Next in line after Jin is Suga, Jhope, Rm, Jimin, V, then JK. Jin will be 30 this December, Suga will be 30 March 2023, Jhope will be 29 February, Rm 29, September of 2023, Jimin 27 October 2023, V 27 December of 2023 and Jk 26 September of 2023. I also heard that the government was gonna figure out a way for them to perform while serving. I say NO! You want them to serve, then let them serve. You will have to do without them and see if you guys will have any regrets. I'm sure your economy will suffer somewhat. BTS fans and ARMIES will make the best of it and wait for their return. They have control of their own lives and will make their own choices!
See this is what I have been wondering about how can they all be back together in 2025 if they're all gonna enlist At their own pace..if suga is next because he turns 30 in March of 23 and then followed by RM J hope And so on then there's no way they would all be together in 2025 unless they're all going to enlist next year. 18 months to 2 years of service their enlistments were deferred till they were 30. Now jin decided not to sign to continue his deferment.. Does this mean the others are going to not sign theirs and just go at the beginning of next year sometime. That way say they all sign up and go in April 2023 That would bring them all back if they serve 18 months by November December of 2024 and would give them a little time to relax and rest to come back strong in 2025. But it's confusing because some news reports are saying no only Jin will be serving and the others will go at their own pace but will all be together in 2025. But that means that the next 3 oldest would be using their deferments till their 30 but suga turns 30 in March of 2023.. I'm sorry it's just very confusing honestly I just think they should all go together and even if it's staggered a few months. I mean yes I think they should have been exempt when you bring in anywhere from 3.5 billion dollars to 5 billion dollars to an economy of a country and you do all forms of service I think you deserve it ..but I am very proud of these 7 men for putting aside All the games that the government is playing with them and stepping up to do their service because they are proud men. I just hope they're treated respectfully by the other gentleman that will be serving .I know there were fears that people would try and take pictures of them showering together and different things I just hope that they're Treated respectfully because they're choosing to do this they're not being told they are choosing To not get special treatment.

When over 50 million people turn their eyes on a nation because of 7 young men who are cherished and respected globally, whose influence drew millions to their nation, language and culture, who have striven for excellence in their chosen field are told that their contribution is of less value than an Olympic athlete,baseball player or concert pianist then there is a massive problem. That is not only a slap in the face of every idol group, it’s a slap in the face of every fan who contributed revenue to their idol group in merchandise and tickets. It is a slap in the face of every young Korean because this message is telling them why bother to strive for excellence it will never be enough. With the issue of youth suicide is this a message this government really wants to send, to reinforce that some are more equal than others. What about the scholarships,donations,gifts that idols have donated to performing arts,schools,less financially fortunate and the charitable works their fans have done in their names all over the world. Shocked,saddened and disappointed. This is not about avoiding military service this is about recognizing,appreciating and valuing the Hallyu Wave and the impact of Idol groups as cultural icons and ambassadors. How is it that these young people are valued globally but their own government say they have no lasting value to the country. Let me say that statement is erroneous- a pop song once a favourite in my youth can return me instantly to times,faces,places and events. I am ashamed by that statement. Agreed...the govt have to look at and established equal laws for exemptions. There's no korean musical artist or Olympian that I can name because of the cultural merit and prestige that they bring to the nation that entitled them for exemption. But had the govt forgotten BTS contribution to S. Korea economy, culture,tourism, products etc. BTS are known globally young or old people. At my age I can name the 7 BTS members and I am not from S. BTS has stepped up. They are fulfilling their duty to country again, just as they have voluntarily and repeatedly done over the years. The military should not put exceptional burdens on them by forcing them to essentially work two full time jobs. They work long hours now. Military service is full time as well. Both at the same time would be insane and unethical.

Wow! I'm proud of whatever decision the South Korea government decides. BTS will truly be missed whenever they are going to serve their country. But, by being in the military service, all of the BTS Members will be physically fit when they come home. It would be sad if Jin was the first member to serve alone. I was watching some talk shows around the world about this and people are proud of BTS but really think S. Korea is making a huge mistake by sending them to the military. Other people in S. Korea get deferments why not the people who have brought S. Korea to the forefront. Rich people's kids, Sports Figures even other musicians get deferments. Over 100 deferments are handed out a year.
They don’t need to perform during their military service.. They already prepared a lot of contents for army, the government should leave them alone!
BTS will be back together again and ARMY will be waiting.

The others don't plan to follow in the coming years, but in the coming months since it's expected to have all them serving by June 2023 and have the group resuming activities in 2025.

As sad as I am to see them go, I'm glad they won't allow the SK government to use them anymore. Also, kind of wished they enlisted as a group, and not do any performing during their enlistment. That's how they would really hurt the SK governments pockets.

Its a shame that the BTS never got proper respect they deserve from their own country people and the government. They were only used as a tool for making money and diplomacy. Their contributions are much higher than any other south korean athletes or artist can ever achieve. Despite the fact that the group never wanted exemptions, its the south korean people and government responsibilty to ensure the fairness considering their contribution to south korea and give them exemptions as a respect. 2 years wait is nothing for their fans but the government and the people should be ready to suffer the losses that it will bring to the country. The soft power that BTS has given to south korea is way beyond any other thing.....
