  • 3x Gulfstream II-B's takeoff in a typical smoke filled Rolls Royce Spey fashion. The first two are special mission aircraft and the third is a missile telemetry aircraft (HALO4, N779LC).
Enjoy the classic sound of these old workhorses as they thunder out of the airports, especially with HALO4 letting those speys thunder off into the distance!

Don't recall seeing smoke trails on newer jets these days but still pretty cool to see

Because one is turbo jet, the other is turbo fan.

@@mr.joshuah1412 Spey Mk511's are turbofans, but extremally low bypass. Most common jets have a single fan stage. This engine has 5 stages of bypass compressors (fans).

S/n 775 is a one off airplane since it was built. My first job as an a&p was at an interior shop that refurbished the interior in it. Maybe in about 99. Since I’ve worked on a bunch of these. Got out of it years ago, but miss the g2 and g3 the most.

Love love LOVE those unhushed Speys!!!! Glad experimental ones still get to fly without Stage III hush kits. Love how HALO4 doesn’t do a cut back departing from SMX, because typically they do cut backs. I gotta hear em again.

Curious, why so much smoke? Old jets?

Yes, they burn alot of fuel too. But in the 70"s 80"s fuel was cheap. 60 cents a gallon. It didnt matter

The Spey used a ten can 'tubo-annular' combustion section.
The combustors are made of high temperature 'wiggle strips' and are inefficient.
There is a modification to use 'transply' like the Tay that reduces NOx emissions and soot.
