  • Ever wondered what it's like to take the throttle of the only operating Norfolk & Western 4-8-0? Here's your answer! Join me for a candid recollection of my run with #475 on the Strasburg Railroad during the In-Cab Experiences of the Reunion of Steam event.

    The Valley Railroad of Essex, CT also offers a program called “Your Hand on the Throttle” very similar to this. If you enjoyed this, I’d definitely recommend checking that out.

    Was there on this day and operated 475 myself - knew your voice sounded familiar.

    How do you get to access the picnic area in Leman Place? Just curious, looks like a great spot to trainwatch

    • @jimmylambert8709
      @jimmylambert8709  Před 3 lety +1

      Sometimes you can request that the train crew let you get off and walk to it. Otherwise you can drive to Leaman Place, park out of the way by the marble company, and walk down a little gravel access road next to the Strasburg track to reach it. The best time of day to visit Leaman Place is around 1-2PM, as that's usually when the two "Pennsylvanian" trains pass through. Otherwise the two hourly Keystone service trains pass through about on the 45 of the hour.

    What is the grade coming out of Leamen Place?

    • @jimmylambert8709
      @jimmylambert8709  Před 3 lety +1

      I think it's somewhere between 1% and 1.5%

      Sorry to pester, but do you know any of the other grades? I'm asking because I'm build a recreation of Strasburg in TRS 2019 but I didn't know any of the grades. Thanks!

      @@southernkansasrailfan3746 While I'm not exactly a qualified engineer or anything (or even remotely involved with the railroad itself) I can give you a basic run-down of the railroad's grade profile.
      Going from Leaman Place to East Strasburg:
      From the Marble Company next to the runaround down to about 200 feet beyond the switch at the entrance of Leaman place is a downhill grade, it slowly inclreases until its steepest point near the switch then levels off.
      The straightaway between that switch and the start of "Long Curve" (First mainline curve outside of Leaman) is mostly flat.
      Long Curve is all uphill, I'd guess between 1-1.5%, the grade continues past Byler's (farm) crossing and levels out for the straightaway across the bridge and on to Carpenter's Crossing.
      Between Carpenter's Crossing and Groff's siding the grade gradually increases to 1.515% and stays at that gradient from Groff's all the way through Cherry Hill crossing and on up to the Esbenshade (Turkey Farm) crossing, with only a 300 or 400 foot level section near Ground Hog cut (in the grove of trees between Southside [Corn Maze] farm crossing and Esbenshade crossing.)
      Between Esbenshade crossing and Fairview crossing, the mainline is level.
      From Fairview crossing to the first switches of the yard is a slight downhill grade, 0.5% to 1% if that.
      The yard and station area is pretty much level.
      The tracks going beyond Route 741 to the old mill property gently slope up, but not by much.
      Hope that helps. If you're going to build the railroad in any simulator, starting with DEM terrain is a real blessing. I wouldn't have been able to do my 1920s version of the railroad for Railworks without it.

    So, you operated the old cagney at Braddock Heights? Whatever happened to that thing after the owner passed away? I've been looking for videos of it operating since everywhere and that little clip of yours might be the only one.

    • @jimmylambert8709
      @jimmylambert8709  Před rokem +1

      I know the family very well. That clip is from before the owner passed away. Here's why there's been no video of it running for some time:
      The Cagney last operated in October of 2015, when several boiler tubes developed leaks. The boiler was taken to a contractor (Not Wasatch, don't worry) for new tubes. While the boiler was there, the owner passed away. The repairs were completed and the boiler is back in Maryland. The family still has the locomotive, I last saw it a couple months ago. There have been some unexpected problems encountered in re-assembling the locomotive however, and the family has their hands full operating their business. There are members of the family who really want to see the Cagney run again, but progress has been slow. I do believe it will run again eventually.
