Just a note to make all clear. RIR was the abbreviation for the Royal Irish Rifles who in 1922 became the RUR, or Royal Ulster Rifles. The Royal Irish Rangers had the abbreviation R IRISH as does the Royal Irish Regiment today. A little confusing maybe, but well worth getting right.
That black and white photograph that made you click was taken in the Falkland Islands, in mount pleasant, B company , around 1994….nothing to do with the UDR, pure first Bn
It is true that after a short period at he begnning UDR members were nly Protestants - mainly Presbiterians- and the Regiment would have become more and more an "Orange Lodge" more than an impartial Regiment. In 2019 there was a Remembrance in Coleraine whose video is also on CZcams and former soldiers had got suits and scarves lke the Orangists .
