- Join me for a walk around West Norwood Cemetery - The Greek Enclosure! We'll peek through mausoleum doors and have a look back in time at the late 1800s where time has stood still for for the people who reside in them. I read a news article a year or so ago saying human remains could be seen poking out of coffins, so I'm heading there to see for myself.
Opened as the South Metropolitan Cemetery in 1837, West Norwood Cemetery is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries of London and is said to hold the finest collection of sepulchral monuments in the capital. There are 65 Grade II Listed monuments in West Norwood Cemetery. The Greek Enclosure is most impressive of all.

I dont know if you ignored what you seen in this episode but the fist leather covered coffin tomb you looked into the left door. Then you panned to the right door and if you look at the top right hand corner of the screen you can see a hand hanging out of the coffin
I didn't even notice lol. It could well be
That's why you need to cremate your loved one.
What I gotta look at that again
I watched it again an I saw a Arm laying down
I looked but I didn't see anything recognizable. If the coffin isn't cracked or broken, there's no way any bones would be seen.
Being a pensioner: l like to watch these videos after breakfast, it helps my meal digest......and it informs me on what is on the horizon for me in future years.....l,m 68, so hopefully quite a few years down the line. It certainly brings home, ones mortality, irrespective of age.
Well said, Sir! None of us know the hour of our death. It is just a graduation from this life, God preparing us for His worlds to come! Rick Dwayne Rumpff, Celina, Ohio USA. "Deus Gratia, Rex! HM Charles III."
Considering the age of this cemetery, it seems to have held up pretty well throughout the years.
It's sad that some cemeteries wind up being forgotten about and lack the maintenance that they deserve.
Still a beautiful cemetery indeed. It's great to see so much greenery everywhere you look, where I live (desert) not so much. Thanks for stroll. 👍
Old cemeteries are like a history book of the past with grandeur style and class .
The stonework and masonary are extraordinary. Even in disrepair the marble and stone are a thing to behold.
The mausoleum u passed at for A. P. Argenti. His name is Pandeli Ambrose Argenti n he was only 31-32 years old at the time of his passing. He died on a holiday the USA celebrates honoring our independance, 4 Jul 1885. So young he was.
The grave stone with the ship on it belonging to Pandelis, Ariadne Pandelis, its the grave of a woman 70-71 yo. She is the wife of Basil Pandelis. I wonder where he is buried? Seems back in the day a husband n wife were buried together.
Ur video was great. It's nice to see places we in the US won't ever get to visit. Thank u for bringing it to us n for ur time n commentary. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks for the extra info. Happy to show your round these places x
Such a beautiful place, so much history, it should be preserved, great video, thanks for the walk 🇬🇧👍👍
Thanks Pamela

@@deadgoodwalks good morning 🙏 🌄
Those leather coffin covers were something I've never seen before. I'm surprised they're still intact. Beautiful cemetery, thank you 😊
You're welcome! Me too Stacee, I kind of want one, I know I'm weird lol
Well those are other familys , love ones, and they look after their place because all the blood line will go. 😊❤❤❤.
I mean that’s their family’s piece,, so they have to keep it safe and well look after for their love ones..❤❤😢😢
Super video Dan, thoroughly enjoyed watching.. You are our eyes when we see your work.. Thank you as always! ✨
What a spectacular and beautiful bunch of architecture!! I'm so happy they are restoring some of them. Thanks for sharing this with us!!
Have been to this cemetery several times in the past few years. The city has not done anything to restore this cemetery. The roots from the trees have caused the coffens to surface and rise. The headstones have crumbled and so much vandalizing. The city does not care about the cemetery. They say that it's to costly to repair. They say that it be cheaper to bulldoze everything.
Must be a cemetery for the wealthy. Those markers are not cheap. Such beautiful ornate workmanship.
Another great video. This is another one I would like to visit. Some beautiful monuments.
Even in disrepair, it is beautiful!
Thank you Dan a other top video.... So much history in those graveyards....
What a fantastic cemetery! I could spend quite a while in there! Great video!!
We all will
That was brilliant! It is strange how uneven the ground is in there for sure; definitely can see that being hazardous to the unwary. Still, phenomenal detail in the monuments and mausoleums so worth taking a chance. Beautiful place, and another great video.
Glad you enjoyed it Ron. Thank you
Wow, crammed full you could look for days and never see them all! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
That cemetery is nicely overgrown. Not too far gone, but pleasantly picturesque.
I find walking around cemetery’s fascinating also reading the headstones
That’s disgusting and disrespectful of the cemetery to allow that to happen they are someone’s loved ones that deserve respect and to be looked after
Well , if the money isn't there , what can be done ?
u what fuck all dead kin
🤔☝️your feet are on the earth sweetheart.😉& you have no idea who you have walked on.no need to be judgmental.💖😎
It’s honestly sad really
What can you do if they go about in the night
Incredible Cemetery. You have some awesome views there.
You're respectful on these walks Thank you for sharing Appreciate ⚘
Just found your channel thanks for the video keep up the great work stay blessed and be safe!
That is one crowded cemetery. It’s so cool to see this history!!!
Very interesting video. Thank you for taking the time to make. 👍
Some beautiful graves there. Amazing stone work.
So amazing and different room the cemeteries in America, I really enjoy the tour, thanxfor your time.
Thanks for walking with me
Nice video and appreciate the whole grave looking and feeling spooky. Thumbs up to you as you are really brave and take care
Such beautiful tombstones. Glad that they are restoring it
Brilliant. Thank you... Marie from the UK
This just reaffirmed my wish to be scattered in the wind.
I would not want my mortal remains just hanging there forever.
But it is fascinating to see these 👏
Will it matter to us at the end of the day? 😅
@@Will-nb8qk I just don't like the idea of been left hanging around all the time 😅
@@jimbanda lol 😆
Neglected cemeteries are such a shame, almost heartbreaking to see. One thing though is intentional desecration of Graves absolutely no respect for individuals who do that.
I wish they would do some weeding and grass cutting.
The people that vandalized these places are due for some serious karma
I like these old cemeteries. Walking through this would be amazing.
What an amazing cemetery! Thank you
My pleasure Lynn!
I have always loved cemeteries. Back home in Chicago I lived near Rosehill cemetery which is beautiful and so many artistic sculptures. Same with Bohemian cemetery. Plus being a psychic medium I can hear a lot of conversations, but it’s more like you can’t make out what anyone is saying. Also very peaceful, I feel like I’m home.
As a reenactor we do veterans day event there every year.
Absolutely gorgeous cemetery the architecture and styles thr love people had for loved ones ❤️ ♥️
Joan from new Zealand thanks for sharing keep doing what you're doing all the best 😊
We love your channel!🙏
Thank you very much
Oh Gosh! I haven't never seen a cemetery quite like this 🙂 some of it was beautiful but was really crowded, everyone seem to be buried so close! Thank you for showing this to us, my wife and I subscribed ❤️
I absolutely love this channel! ☠️
like your videos so much!!thanx!!!
Wow 🤩 what an amazing place. I’m so glad they are restoring this, it’s well worth it. Sure don’t see many stairs going down they seem to mostly be filled in here so that was fun. PS glad you decided not to die in the graveyard !
haha thanks Linda, it would have been a fitting end to the channel lol
Admittedly these grave yards are fascinating, but crematorium, and scattered is the way to go. No trace, no worries.
I like cold stones & bones 🦴
No resurrection either

Yeah let's have no way of any further generations being able to visibly see history don't you think the newer generations are disrespectful enough as it is! Yeah let's not let these spoilt brat generation know how they have been able to become so spilt and brat like ! Let's just let them think that they are the most important things on earth and untill they were born nothing else matters !
I agree
so interesting 🤔 Thank-you xxxx
Amazing architecture!
Enjoyed the tour
Very special. This is the first time I’ve ever seen these. Very very interesting.
Millions like for you.
It is an amazing place. I'm about five miles away and have visited ten times this year.
Very lucky to have it on your doorstep mate
Great video Stay bledsed and safe dear dan❤
What an interesting cemetery, I love cemetery walks (of course minus seeing any body parts hanging out, as the deceased deserve their dignity), so I hope they get anything like that fixed. But this cemetery will be very nice if they get the renovations completed.
Just love these Videos.
That is the meaning of ashes to ashes dust to dust. Nothing last forever !
Amen!except💖.😉👍😎🙂
U r right. Only damaged bodies are here. While soul are in sky
I've walked passed that cemetery so many times .. wow !
All the years I've been going there and I've never seen inside the Chapel of the Greek cemetery, i can't wait to see how they restore it. Glad it's received funding, needs a bit of love.
Right opposite is the new rose garden/garden of remembrance. I spend many a moment in there remembering my loved ones. I want my ashes to be scattered there one day.
Me too Susan, hopefully they'll have it finished soon. I can't remember if I saw the rose garden, sounds lovely though
It's quite strange to me that there are museums with hundreds of decomposed bodies on display for all to see. Yet if you see it at a cemetery it is some sort of disgrace or so horrific. It makes you wonder or at least me it does.
The funding for keeping cemeterys nice is hard to get. I think maybe a go fund me would help if the money when to the right place
NO DECEASED BODY should be on display, either historical or recent
We must try to respect the last wishes
@@mariepollard8734 It's because before the Individual died, he or she wanted to donate their bodies to serve as a means to educate, in other words, they wanted to have their bodies on display for the sake of science in regards to the physical analysis of the human body because it was their wish to do so.
Me too 😂. So strange.
What got my attention was the name Norwood as we have that suburb and also Brompton! I'm originally from UK, so can see so many name's from my homeland often!
I thought to myself " I didn't know of this cemetery in Norwood haha 👍🇭🇲
I am looking forward to your next vlog
Just found you. Cool walks. You sound like Ringo to me, love your voice. 😌
Hello from California. I'm so glad I found your Channel. I follow one in the United States called faces of the Forgotten it's wonderful and I didn't know yours was around. Very happy
Hi Welcome to the channel, yes I watch Ron too, he's great
Thanks for the tour. It's a shame that so many graves are neglected. Although, and I don't want to sound disrespectful, the neglected ones tend to give the place character I think the word is. I think it reminds people how old they are.
You're welcome Ivan. I like my graves a bit grubby too
Graves get more neglected over time as generations pass. A parent's grave visited by their children and maybe grandchildren from time to time. The children die, the grand kids seldom ever come. The grand kids die, the great grand kids probably don't even know they existed
Thank you for sharing🪦🪦
Szia köszönöm szépen videod.
Nice work brother keep it up
time is certainly taking it's toll, good to see some restoration being done here
It is amazing how quickly cemeteries of the past can decay over time. When new they feel so permanent, but over time the elegance and splendor gradually decay. It is just so difficult to maintain cemeteries over such a long hall absent historical significance.
interesting content...great video..
Another amazing cemetery with fascinating architecture. And I must confess, I love when you peer inside the mausoleums with your camera lens. The leather coffin coverings are unique, are they not? Some of my maternal London ancestors are buried in Norwood Cemetery: Lambeth. Others in Nunhead - Linden Grove, Southwark, Surrey. I kept hoping you’d visit the non-Greek area and perhaps capture my ancestors’ graves. I can’t be certain I will make it back to London again. Many thanks for a wonderful tour and narration.
I've never seen leather ones before, but I kinda like it. If you email me your families names I can look out for them next time and send you the video? Email address is in about section on my channel
@@deadgoodwalks Greetings! Apologies for the tardy response to your kind offer. A family member is having health issues which has kept me occupied. I’m not seeing your email address, and would like to give you my family’s information. Two members only. No worries if the offer is no longer viable. Thank you.

I have no idea where my London folks are buried at??
My folks probably in Shopshire? At least, I think the 6x ggrandmother was. Is there a St. Mary's Church in Shropshire? I'm trying to remember conversations from 30 yrs ago, its sketchy at best! The 6th gg's name was Sarah/Sara Mould!!
i love walking around graveyards there's such serenity and peace
Me too I used to do that as a child
Really enjoying your videos. Thank you. It would be interesting if you could comment on some of the dates on the headstones, I'm sure some of them are extraordinarily old. Thanks.
Thank you Brenda. Yes I'll try to do more of that, still a new channel so I welcome any feedback
Beautiful, historical cemetery, I hope all of the mausoleums will be restored, and glass repaired or replaced. The cemeteries here in US aren't nearly as awesome as your cemeteries there. Although there are beautiful, historical ones here. Serenity Sue there in England has a great channel, she tours the old cemeteries too. Thanks for the tour, loved it. Have a great weekend. 😊
Well done. You didn’t disturb anything like others might. Good video
Just found the channel. My Gosh this is breathtaking so beautiful and so neglected… Incredibly sad state it’s in 😢
Beautiful looking Cemetery and I hope they do completely restore it. And old Cemetery like this has a lot of my history behind it and deserves to be cared for. Minus that I would still be in heaven walking through it. Something about that soothes me. 😌
And is it just me or did I see a hand poking out of that first leather covered coffin? 😰
I used to live within walking distance of Norwood Cemetery. It is still being used as I have been to a few funerals there in the last 20 years.
Awesome thanks 🙏
Reminds me of a cleaned up Abney Park....I haven't been there in ages, but 20 years ago it was completely overgrown, tombs open, and more than a few live folk having a drink!
Well it is not as bad as some crypts that we see. Yes I would also like to stick my head in and view some of the burials inside. I am naturally curious about the older resting places
Isn't it sad how the graves are just left to decay with no-one maintaining the grounds.
becuse many Ghost here.
I would just be freaked out to walk thru there. Kudos to you man for having guts!
First time I have seen your vlog. I certainly will be back.
What a shame no one seems to take care of the place Eg weeds! Everywhere…
Personally I would have loved you showing some grave information Eg the person and the years it amazes me” how old some can be! It’s a bit mind boggling to me” when things are hundreds/thousand’s years old ect
Cheers thanks again for the walk around 🌸
This is beautiful the monuments and cravings are beautiful. It is ashame no one to protect some from elements.
Hopefully the new funding they have will help
Need to wait on Jesus Christ

This cemetery could be beautiful with just a little tidying up.
Seeing your videos for the first time. So far so good. I think Diana is not buried on the Island. Bless you and your videos. Good job.🥰🥰🙏🙏 Suzie from Washington state USA.
Beautiful headstones
Very very interesting how intricate the graves are it's just a shame in some or not doing very well beautiful
It is always very interesting to at least have a little information referencing the decedents.
Fascinating
Just found your channel on tiktok amazing content
Thanks Rebecca x
What an amazing cemetery
I was wondering if you could look up the Graves family as in the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay?
Beautiful mausoleums
Beautifully filmed. Would you share what you used to film it?
Go pro 9 x
I thought America has allot of huge, outrageous tombstone but by golly George! Y'all in England have blown us out of the water on that!
Don't get me wrong, I think their absolutely beautiful & some are just down right stunning! I wish now that most American's would go this elaborate.
We do old and grand very well here lol
fascinating
Sometimes it's stranger see other cemeteries compared to the United States cemeteries we keep our cemeteries cut mode and and good condition is sometimes really weird to see others from other countries that are overgrown and that kept up I'm glad they're restoring the cemetery it looks like very interesting place to visit
Some of these places will be overgrown through neglect but in the UK there is much more of a movement to keep places wild in order to encourage wildlife . We have to do this because we are the least biodiverse nation in the G20 . Most churchyards now have a wildflower patch and the grass is mown in a way that encourages wildlife .✌️
The united states has thousands of cemeteries in worse shape than this! Are you kidding?
These are such unique & detailed tombs ! please a little more time & chance to take in more detail! really historic history sad to see the neglect Gravel on the paths & surrounds would beast & cheap to maintain . So interesting
good video.
Some are so deteriorated, but others stand the test of time. Thx from USA....PNW
My great parents, and my cremated grandmother on top, r buried in East Grinstead, at a cemetery called Mount Noddie. I went to visit in May as I had the rare chance while taking my niece to a diving competition (I live in Southampton so when asked to drive to Tunbridge Wells, I had to make a road trip! Lol!) Well, I knew the ground had subsided, that burials were banned in most of the plots now, and it was wild as even walking with a hand strimmer is dangerous, and bodies had been seen thru broken graves, but nothing prepared me for the guy seemingly looking at me thru the huge gash in the side of his tomb! I told the groundsman after sending my daughter and niece to the car where my sil was waiting (didn't show them that's for sure!) And he said yeah, we get a lot of that here but it's so old we can't do anymore than patch and kids had removed the boards so was waiting for permission to seal or replace the stone. Luckily as I'm here, I am OK with it, but I told my dad (his mum and grandparents) and he had stories from 30yrs ago when my nan went in! Glad to see this place is getting some tlc tho, old churches and grave yards r so beautiful, but most people don't take the time to look.
That must have been quite a shock. Thanks for sharing your story and for watching :)
@@deadgoodwalks certainly wasn't expected to say the least lol!
I’d say the scaffolded building you visited and probably the rest of the place, breaks every health and safety regulation ever written !
