- Kia Kanuta is the Head Chef at Ada in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. He recently won a Lewisham Award for most Outstanding Chef in Auckalnd 2024. We visit Ada to speak to Kia about his award and his food which speaks to his Māori heritage. He's championing the use of Māori ingredients and cooking techniques and helping to tell the Aotearoa New Zealand food story with his cooking. If you want to experience incredible Māori cuisine, you have got to eat at Ada!
What we ate and where we ate it:
Lunch set menu $55 per head at Ada, at The Convent Hotel, 454 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021, New Zealand.
Open for breakfast Friday-Saturday 8am-11am and Sunday 8am-10:30am, lunch Thursday and Friday 12pm-3pm, dinner Tuesday to Saturday 5pm-late and Saturday and Sunday long lunch 11am-5pm.

The waiata at the end made me tear up, you can feel the wairua and ancestral heritage through traditional Maori song. Ka pai!

Had Sunday Lunch there earlier this year (which is a lovely way to experience Ada). The food was delicious (and distinctively different to what other Auckland eateries offer), the service was warm & friendly. Highly recommended.

Fry bread--like Native American fry bread. Oh my--this one is soooooo interesting. Except for hakas and tattoos, Māori culture is almost unknown here in my part of the USA. "Autumn on a plate"--oh my!

95% of that menu is colonial or european introduced food products. Not Maori or indigenous - pumpkin, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, cheese, beef, tomato, cucumber bananas, chocolate, .......
It would be damn nigh impossible to operate a restaurant using solely indigenous ingredients especially given the price point of the menu. Cheers, Sheena
