As I prepare my new garage for my new shop I thought I would tackle the absolutely, hilariously bad, lighting situation. As you know, in any workshop the quantity and quality of lighting is SO important to safety and efficiency. There is no way that the original single bulb fixtures were going to work in there so I set out to find a better way. Oh and it had to be quick and easy since my time has been a precious commodity lately.
If you have been following along on my journey you'll know that in my last shop I installed some Barrina LED fixtures. There is actually a video of that transformation here: • Garage Shop LED Lighti... . Overall I was extremely happy with how that turned out, and would do that again in my shop, however since this garage will serve as a temporary shop AND I didn't have the time to tackle that job...I needed to find a faster way.
That is where I came across the wide world of wacky LED fixtures on Amazon. There seems to be an explosion of Chinese-produced tri-fold fixtures that are now widely available. I began researching the different types, models, brands, and configurations. When installing LED shop lights there are a couple of considerations:
Lumens (measure of light output)
Color Temperature (measured in K, dictates how "cool" or "warm" the light is)
Color Rendering Index (CRI for short, dictates how realistic or color-accurate objects look when illuminated)
For lumens I wanted to shoot for as many as I could. Typically LED fixtures put out anywhere from 100-110 lumens per Watt, where as conventional incandescent bulbs put out about 10 lumens per Watt. For color temperature I know that I like 5000K for a shop. This would be a bit too "cold" for an indoor house light, but I think works really well when building things. Finally, you should always shoot for a CRI above 80. Anything below 80 will cause your projects (and belongings) to appear color-distorted and can throw you off when you're doing things like painting.
With all of the specs laid out I could use that to help weed through the options on Amazon. Since all of these lights utilized an existing lampholder fixture (E26/27), I knew they would be my fastest option, assuming they worked. Below you will find the TOP 3 options I came across:
Top LED (E26) Fixtures on Amazon:
1.) (What I Used) LZHOME 82W Fixtures (2-pack) 9000 lumens per fixture - amzn.to/2WIuo6g
2.) (Runner-Up) ACI 80W Fixtures (2-pack) 8000 lumens per fixture - amzn.to/3g0Qet6
3.) (Stupid-Bright Alternative) ZJOJO 100W Fixtures (2-pack) 12,500 lumens per fixture - amzn.to/2ZLMqqb
I purchased a total of 8 fixtures and installed 7 of them in my 3-car garage...WOW what a difference! Per the product page, each fixture puts out 9,000 lumens so my garage (in theory) is now lit by 63,000 lumens total! They were a breeze to install and assuming I just re-used my existing 4 ceiling fixtures...would have taken a whopping 5 minutes to complete.

I changed the video speed x2 and i was able to learn how to light my garage in 5 minutes.
Orrrr just click the amazon link...
That's how I watch every video on youtube
I c what you did.
Funny
LOL
I am an electrical contractor and you really made changing light bulbs interesting and entertaining. I subscribed.

Thanks for watching!
I do love that you're willing to cover complex stuff and approachable stuff. There are often simple solutions to simple problems!
The irony of a 10 minute video for a 5 minute job is not lost on me LOL. I love it. Looking forward to seeing more projects in the new shop!
😂
@@ShopNation how many watts do they use
I believe it’s around 12W per bulb
In his defense, two minutes in a hot attic on a summer afternoon feels like a lifetime.
I bought some very similar with the 3 wings and put one in my "single car" garage and the difference is incredible. The other went into my half basement and I can see things now that I wish I hadn't, lol. You really should be doing this on a network. You are very good at explaining and doing things with humor too!
How are these lights holding up after 2 years?
I like how a 5 minute install took 10 minutes to explain ...
:-D
looked for this comment !
Needs to be over 10 min for ads
add 5 mins of stupid ads to
OMG- talk about bloviating. For someone who doesn’t have much time they spent waaaay too long putting this video together. Should have been a 3-4 minute video.
@@TuscanTalent Yeah there's no doubt that the lights work and light up the garage.
I bought these from the local retailer on a whim a month ago and thought "Meh, they're kinda expensive but let's try 'em out." One of the few things I bought that I thought was a gimmick but actually does a really good job.

I've always wondered how those lights performed. Thanks for putting together this video, Travis!
thanks for this video, I bought 4 of these on your recommendation for my garage about a year ago and have been really satisfied / amazed with how much brighter they have made the space.
I’ve had these in my garage for a year or so and I LOVE them. It’s almost embarrassing how bright they are. Lol. Many of my neighbors have also upgraded to these.
I had 4 bulb fluorescent lights in my kitchen and changed the bulbs to LEDs and wow what a difference it made. Those lights for your garage are great and yes it’s a cool upgrade and easy to accomplish!
I just want to say that this video is truly illuminating. I have struggled with lighting issues in the past, your expertise has illuminated different options on my illumination needs.
What an enlightening perspective! Thank you for shedding some light on a dark issue, it has really brightened my day.
I ordered this after your recommendation - amazing. We only have one light fixture in our two-car garage, and it was very inadequate. Not being handy like you, and not having access to the space above the garage, we couldn’t add additional fixtures - BUT, just one of these lights has made a world of difference. Thanks for the tip.
Im so glad that you finally upgraded your lighting. It was difficult to see you from my car across the street at night with that horrible old lighting. Much appreciated
LOL WHAT
King Ogii 😂😂😉

LOL.....
Golf expert from watching others play no doubt. I'm sure that's how it's done. Unless of course you are one of the few who makes his living "playing" golf or if you have been presented with a green jacket. You're probably a duffer
I bought one of these for my basement/crawl space (I live on a hill, so it's fairly large storage area between floors), which had a single light bulb to light up the whole area. I've had mine for two years now and it's working great--lots of light!
I can't wait to see how the new/temporary shop comes together!
Dude! Mine came in today and they are amazing! Transformed the space. Thanks for sharing!
Have had mine installed just over a year. No issues and damn bright! Good choice!!! But now I want to add a few more, thanks Travis! Ha!
i purchased that same fixture a few months ago. Its amazing the difference it made in my garage. I no longer have to bring a flashlight out to the garage anymore
Was laying around Flippin through youtube and saw this video and I'm ordering some of these today! Thanks for sharing this video I was looking for a lighting option for my little workshop without having to break the bank and this is it
Literally the moment you said “is this guy making a video about changing a light bulb “ I was thinking the same damn thing!!!
I just installed a pair of the LZHome lights. WOW! Your review is spot on! These things are easy to install and provide so much light. They are amazing! Perfect for my workshop!
I bought one those for my garage about a year ago. It's makes a world of difference! I highly recommend those.
You've got so much light coming out of your garage, you probably have small planes looking for the landing strip at night. Good job, man.
LOL, BigSteve! You gave me a belly laugh!
500 degree attic is exactly the reason my inside house renovations are on hold and I am focused on the outside!
Thanks so much for the help ! My garge looks great and can now see everything.
750 sqft of garage!! This guy’s garage is bigger than where I live😂
Looks like the mother ship landed when those doors opened. Great info and video. Thanks for sharing. *Chris*
Lol 😆
Dont know how I ended up here but I wasnt planning on upgrading my garage lighting since i had recently changed the light bulbs to LED but daym just had to buy this thanks for the video
I’ve been contemplating getting these for awhile now. Thanks for the vid!
Always interesting to watch your videos. You explain things and show the differences. Thanks for all you do and for helping some us understand things better. Be safe.
Did the same thing with my 3 car. What a change. I had six sockets and love the light spread. Also the ability to adjust where you want to throw the light is a plus.
I'm disappointed that you didn't have sunglasses on when you revealed the upgraded lights, lol
These lights are amazing! Bought one the other day and will never go back!
Travis. Thanks for the lighting tip. We just closed on our new house. As soon as the papers were signed I installed the lights you recommended, and they worked like a charm. I am really please with the quality of the lighting. I may add a third light in the future. Your CZcams video was on point. Next project to all a 120V and a 220V circuit to my garage. Love your content.
I’ve put a couple of those lights in my garage it help a great deal, looking to install a couple more lights later after I’ve remodeled our house. Worth the money I spent on them though.
Osha's approved got some chuckles out of me
Travis, your sense of humor is great. "It's July when I'm shooting this" while you glace at your watch. It's the little things. Oh, and nice lights.
I upgraded my garage light with this recommended light. Great improvement!
I cant believe I just watched a video about changing light bulbs. lol. Thanks for the review. I have been looking at these on amazon. I think I'll get a couple. **
5:41 I was waiting for a "Clark Griswald" moment from Christmas Vacation
LMAO! Dude, that's too funny. I was waiting for it too!
This is a great idea. I was looking into 4 tube 48 inch T-8 fixtures.
Thanks for doing the research for me. I ordered mine today.
I also find it crazy when someone builds a garage and puts two light in it. My garage is about the same size as yours and I had two lights and one outlet. Several year ago (before LEDs) I added florescent lights and this year I wired in some LEDs, BIG improvement. Keep up the good work.
Unless it is a custom built home, the builder is going to cut costs where they can. A few lights in the basement, maybe 2 in the attic, cheap bathroom fan, minimum receptacles just enough to meet code. Anything more eats into profit margins. And for most people, 4 lights in the garage is fine. Enough light to let them see where they are going from the car to the door. Nobody is going to rough in 60 amps of circuits into a garage on a spec house.
Nice ... My wife is always complaining about the lighting in her quilting room, I bet 2 of those will brighten it up 🤔 either that or she'll go blind 😂😂😂
(I know blindness isn't funny, I was referring to the brightness of the lights)
Thanks for the link on the other lights ..think those will work great in my woodshop, to old & broke down to wrench anymore 😢 ( to all you young bucks - - work smarter not harder, your body will appreciate it later in.life😊👍)

Just found your channel. Love the honesty and the realistic look at what you do.
I'm proud of you for your doing this upgrade to the lighting in your garage young man
Heck yes dude. I went a different route with my temporary lighting... 3 years ago... but I also went for the ability to light the neighborhood. There are two downsides: 1) It attracts all the bugs at night. All of them, especially the kinds you don't want. 2) Now all the neighborhood feral cats know when I'm home, and they know I'm a sucker for handing out food and treats.
I bought one similar to these for my small one car garage. I got it at the local Big Lots Store for $24. Works fantastic. Amazing lighting!
Sounds like a great easy upgrade to a shop or garage. I'm going to look into this. Thanks
Nice! I added a pack of the Barinna strip lights to 1 side of my garage shop based off your how to vid. Then I also added one of these type lights in this video to the single bulb fixture to give a "light" boost to the rest of the space that I don't necessarily need full shop lights in.
Both are a world of a difference and both cheap and easy!
Funny thing. I just installed two of these in my garage. Came in the house, started watching CZcams and this vid came across my feed.🤔
Big brother is always watching bro
Thank you for doing the research! I've been interesting in adding one of these lights to my 1-car garage for a while now, but there are just SO many that I was a bit overwhelmed and wasn't sure if I'd be making the right choice. Based on the 3 options you provided, I am going to purchase 1 of the LZHOME light fixtures as well :)
how did it turn out, and are they still working well?
This is super helpful. I’ve been needing better lighting in the garage but I haven’t wanted to invest too much time/money as we’ll be looking for a new house soon.
I picked one up and what a great upgrade to lighting without having to add more fixtures.
thanks
5:27 - 🎵Come with me, and you'll see, a world of OSHA Violation 🎵
A second before your OSHA Approved 'disclaimer' popped up, I facepalmed your workaround.
But since it's approved, continue on!
Awesome video, Travis! I just started adding new lights to my shop and I don't know how I did anything before! Unfortunately I don't have any standard light sockets, but I was able to go with a shop light that plugs into an outlet. Looking forward to seeing the new shop come along.
Thanks... and great timing, I’m in the middle of a shop upgrade, lights and all.
Normal standard lighting for a garage is one keyless fixture per car bay. So if it's a two car garage you'll get 2 light bulbs and that's it. Builders are cheap AF in Canada
7:25 HIT THAT GARAGE DOOR RAIL (SCREW DRIVE) WITH SOME LUCAS WHITE LITHIUM GREASE.... YOU WILL BE MUCH QUIETER.
He will probably spend 20 minutes telling you where to by grease before he gets to using it for 5 minutes then spend another 20 minutes patting himself on the back for his effort.
conversely you took 1 line.
I have similar ones but with five modules instead of three. Holdin up great for about a year now.
Lookin forward to your new shop build!
Ok here they holding up now?
closing on my 1st and forever home looking forward to learning from you to build my 1st detail shop
I bought two of these for my garage. What I didn’t know is that the led panel puts out so much RF energy that it burned out my garage door remote control board. $65.00 for the bulbs and $70.00 for a new circuit board. Fantastic amount of light but poor design.
Not knowing, I put led bulbs in my door opener & before I knew it, they fried my circuit board.
So you put these bulbs on your garage door opener?
Please tell us how close you mounted the lights to the garage door opener so we don't have the same problem.
Lights were 3 feet away from the opener. D
Really? RF energy from the replacement light fixture is the cause of the circuit board burn out? Having a very serious background in commercial broadcasting where RF output is well understood, designing a number of serious antenna arrays which put out a SIGNIFICANT amount of RF energy than what this light fixture could possibly disperse, I am left in a seriously amused state by your findings!! I think you might want to report your experience to the FCC and Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms! I look forward to reading about it! This light fixture just might be the very secret weapon needed to ward off enemies of the state! (He said, with tongue in cheek). Thanks for making my day! 😀
It's like the doors opening on the MOTHER SHIP!
😂
This is a really good video. I like that you provide options. I am looking to upgrade my lights in my shop and you helped me make up my mind by doing the research for me. Thank you.
Absolutely fantastic! I have read a number of (less than appreciative) comments. All I can say is: "They totally don't get it!" It's not just about how to change a light bulb, it's about how a great guy took his time to spend HOURS videoing (recording) a phenomenal amount of footage, editing, digital splicing, audio management, etc. to put this video together in addition to the research and investigation into the final selection PLUS the before and after results. I VERY much appreciate what you have done. Thanks! I did, however, purchase a different model... 140 watts, 18,500 lumens 6000K daylight (and a pair of sunglasses). Only needed one for the one socket in the ceiling of our house garage... I think it instantly killed all vermin that possibly had taken up residence! LOL Thanks again! -Woodprobie
I started using a couple of Y adapters with LED light bulbs in them. I’ve done 4 in a single socket. It puts out way more light for way less money. The led’s use so much less power than a 60 watt or 100 watt bulb that I’m not overloading anything. The also seem less harsh and directional than these type. I bought some last year and returned them as they weren’t as bright as a bunch of led lights and Y’s
Your new neighbors are going to absolutely LOVE you.........all that light is going to attract every bug for at least a mile. They can have evening get togethers with their family and friends without the bugs.
BTW........in just a weeks time you picked up over 16000 new subscribers pushing you well above that 100000 mark. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!
Yes! I got these same (similar) lights a few months ago and did a quick review video. They are awesome and super cheap!
Thanks for doing the research. Already have the led tubes in my garage that you did in your last home. I'll be getting the bulbs in this video for my basement.
Wow! outstanding.
Chinese made has some quality lights, especially Led, just hard to distinguish the junk and good, so much fake review on amazon.
go to youtube reviews you will find honest reviews of a light, over china/amazon reviews
“ OSHA APPROVED” LOL
My house was built in 1969. 2 incandescent light bulbs for the 2 bay garage. VERY DIM!!! Even with 250 watt flood lights. When LED shop lights came out that would work in the New England winters I installed 4 for a much better situation. Then I saw these and realized I still had the original screw sockets hanging around. Added these and just about doubled the intensity! Well recommended.
You’re another reason I love CZcams!
The unfortunate thing is that these led lights will fail in a few months. I bought three of different brands (allegedly), and they all failed within a few months. Cool in concept, but QC leaves a lot to be desired.
I bought some inexpensive LED bulbs two years ago.
When they started failing after a year, I determined it was the tiny converter chip. They’re really quite cheap to replace.
The 8ft LED I bought last year and it's been very hot in shop .....between 90- 105 degrees at peak ......12ft ceiling they have not FAILED yet ..
Installed 8 LED from Wal-Mart two years ago. Local temps from 0 to 105 and high humidity. No issues.
I find them light give off lots of interference. Can’t even get the radio stations to come in. They are bright though.
I agree. I put in 2 and am losing signal for most radio station. I am going to try to put an outdoor antenna to see if it makes a difference
Cambium Guy you can get things to put over the wires going to the lights to block the interference.
people still listen to Radio stations? just blue tooth Pandora from your phone?
@@bourgericful Radio is free. Data in rural areas is expensive
@@cambiumguy if you have internet, you can use wifi no data usage.
Thank you very much for this video. I just installed them in my garage. The difference is literally night and day. Not only are they bright, but turn on instantly. Some don't.
I have fitted similar lights, they are fantastic.. this is the best design.
Guy takes 10 minutes to explain how adding a bunch of lights to his garage results in added light.
Ten minutes is the minimum for CZcams to pay you for ads. This is why this video is 10:02 and so many others.
That’s actually not true, 10 minutes is the minimum for ads to show up mid-video, but the length of my videos truly have nothing to do with that. I can’t speak for others though
@@ShopNation I call bullshit. Good video nonetheless
I know lighting tech was pretty primitive when your house was built in the 90s but house builders cheap out on everything. Also, the previous owner could have installed brighter incandescents but cheaped out. When I moved 2 1/2 years ago there were 40 watt incandescent bulbs in the bathroom light fixture. Apartment complexes must operate from the same cheapskate book as builders.
Haha
Got half way thru your video, clicked the link, and bought the exact like from Amazon. Big thx
I just installed a pair of these and they’re incredibly bright. Now I can clearly see how badly I need to clean the garage
Yeah, definitely shows the dirt!
I just sat through a 10 minute video on how to change a light bulb because the guy was hot. I need to get out more!
Sir. Had your video paused while I was speaking with my wife and she asked, "Why is he wearing a shirt that says Porn on it?" The angle of the letters being cut off by bottom of the video window... I laughed, you should too.
Oh wow that’s great 😁
Thanks for the video. Watched it a few months ago and went out and bought 8 for my 3 car garage but not the brand you have but very similar. They hav3 been sitting in my building since waiting for electrician to come put up boxes and screw in socket. Got tired of waiting and although not an electrician myself after a lot of research did it myself this past weekend. Took me all day bu5 man was it worth it. Lights were simple install wiring took long. I 4 double 4 foot fluorescent tiny lights lights but now nothing I can’t see in the garage. Wife came out after installation and said “this is ridiculous” just what I wanted. Thanks again.
Great lighting solution. Probably a great option for uninsulated garages in cold climates.
Formerly: Welcome to my garage! Now: Welcome to my tanning booth!

Thanks for doing the leg work and figuring out the best lights. Beats me just buying them based on price then being completely disappointed with the product.
thanks for the links, got to get those in my shop now
should be in as little as 27 seconds lmao. but nah I have similar lights they're amazing
Are you seriously telling people how to screw in a light bulb? 🤣😂
Doing a remodel and there was no insulation in the house. The whole house was a 500degree attic. No work after 10am. The spray foam guy was out on Sunday and it’s real nice now. Speaking of attics, those fixtures would be good in an attic as well. Good to see the video. Them new babies will keep you busy.
thanks for sharing the research on the bulbs.
Just bought some of these. They work great.
Simple, clean, and BRIGHT!
Wow, those look great. Thanks for sharing probably gonna pick up a couple
Another great video, thanks for sharing. I'm getting a heap of great ideas off you for SHOP GREATNESS over here in Australia. You have inspired me.
