    Jamaica Sailing is hardly ever discussed. While many other Caribbean islands have hundreds of yachts coming to their shores and their crew members, not the poorest people, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars there, Jamaica doesn't really get much of this business. Why not?
    If you're new here, my name is Irina and this channel is dedicated to Jamaica.
    Today I'd like to share a story with you about an extraordinary lady in her 70s who was born in the United States, but is proud to be a Jamaican citizen. As a foreigner myself I look up to this lady because this is the kind of retirement in Jamaica I am personally aiming for.
    So, Please welcome my lifestyle role model - Carolyn Barrett. She is the CEO of Barrett Adventures, a tour company in Montego Bay, Jamaica, that specializes in Off-the-beaten path travel.

    Easiest way to boost sailing is to host a major international competition with an attractive monetary award.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  Před 3 měsíci +14

      yep, and Jamaica has been doing international sailing competition already - it's called Pineapple Cup. However, it doesn't have as much publicity as some other competitions, so it just needs marketing. As for the monetary award - most people who take part in racing are not doing it for money, as it costs way too much to participate in such competitions. Most sailors participate in racing for the process and ambitions.

    🇯🇲It’s amazing, the people who love and live amongst us from yonder shores.
    Without social media most would be figments of our imaginations, for sure.
    Some are travelers, content-creators, thrill-seekers, snorkelers and investors.
    Without fanfare, glitz or glamour they too roll up their sleeves to make a dollar.
    Front-line warriors who love and promote brand Jamaica without fail.
    Like Miss Barrett 30 years in Jamaica, from the days of snail mail.
    Irene, our brand first-responder whenever the media try to besmirch or slander.
    We love you back Irene, only because love is priceless and you’re a cheerful giver.💋🍒

    I enjoy many of your episodes. They are all relevant to the reality of Jamaica 🇯🇲.... However, this was clearly one of my favorite. This lady is amazing. Her education may be formal as well. However, i make that point to say it's clear her sense of adventure is due to her her insatiable curiosity and "can- do" indomitable attitude. She really is an example for anyone looking to venture out with any goal they may have in a new venture. Rolls with the punches sort of type. Can you please one day do another episode with her? Your chemistry together was very good.

      Actually it was many years before I knew that many Jamaicans did not know how to swim.
      My dad may have been the exception.
      Brown in St. Elizabeth he and his friends used to swim and dive for pearls, conch, oysters, off the beaches in Jamaica.
      He left at a very young age to join the British Air Force during WW II and then was offered to go “to the states”. Along the way he somehow met my Mom who was a student at the Alpha school and was born in St Anne.
      Short of a long story they kept in touch and got married in Harlem then moved to Connecticut, where all of us had to learn how to swim!!! 🏊‍♀️🏊🏊🏽‍♂️

      @douglasjoseph What a preposterous statement. Jamaicans are killing each other over scamming, gang warfare, family land, and interrelationship issues, and here you are saying that they should kill tourists. So then Jamaica becomes a pariah in the world more than it is presently because of the crime issues. No tourists would come and our economy would suffer and become another Haiti.

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  Před 3 měsíci +5

      I've seen both sides of the story and can confirm Jamaicans do NOT like "outsiders" more than the locals. What's really happening is that the "outsiders" FIRST give love and respect for Jamaicans and Jamaicans naturally return the favour, as they see genuine interest and better treatment from the "outsiders" than from their own people.
      Jamaicans who act in the same way - give love and respect to their own people FIRST - will get the same love and respect in return.
      "Outsiders" who don't give respect first - never get it in return either. See "the Fake Diplomat" video on my channel about Mario (outsider) who kept complaining about Jamaicans - and nobody was giving him any love and respect. Basically, if you walk around assuming that people are bad - they will not treat you nice either, as simple as that.
      The bottomline - it simply depends on the person and has nothing to do with whether the person is an outsider or a local person.
      By the way, do you consider Carolyn to be an "outsider"? A person whose family is Jamaican (she's married to a Jamaican) and spent over 30 years in Jamaica?

    Another great one showing how addictive my kidnapping island is. It sucks you in and that's it.

    I was wondering when it was filmed when I saw the Christmas Tree.
    My sister in law lives in Buff Bay and she keeps her tree up year round, only because she has a special needs child.
    But my mind did wonder, “Do Jamaicans keep their trees up all year?”

    • @JAMAICAWITHIRIE
      @JAMAICAWITHIRIE  Před 3 měsíci +3

      Not sure how long Jamaicans keep the trees, but the interview itself was filmed at Christmas over a year ago (November 2022) so the tree was there for a reason. It just takes me forever to edit the videos, I have about 20+ stories sitting on my disks filmed.. waiting for editing, but keep being pushed 'cause something urgent comes up, like that Travel Advisory situation.

    It's sounds like the sailing community find sailing around Jamaica too challenging, so they chose the easy options. Someone needs to sponsor a sailing competition, sailing round the island challenge cup or something, with a worthwhile prize..and make it a yearly event..another awesome vlog. I enjoyed story. My girl is seriously fit for her age. Great personality and great vybs..❤️🙏🏾..🇯🇲💯

      yes, we have Pineapple Cup, which is sailing from Miami to Montego Bay, it's quite challenging, but it's been going on from 1961. The next one is in January 2025

    Great video! To your point, I had no idea there was sailing in Jamaica. There are so many boat tours, but you really don’t see sailing charters advertised. Now, I know!
