This is how we loved Shelly Road, so many wonderful memories, thankyou
I live about five minutes away from there. I lived in Exmouth for eight years.
Thanks Tony,
This has brought back some fond memories of the old docks and Shelly. Used to go fishing there for mullet as a kid.
I still live in Exmouth.
I spent a lot of time in the six years before the lockdown, and during lockdown, walking with someone to the docks, long after the new buildings had been built.
Most summer holidays at the cat and fiddle. I am so glad someone has posted video of how I remember the harbour. Couldn't believe it when I saw what it looks like now. the slipway @ 1;07 brings back great memories of my father launching the 8ft tender he just got from a place facing into the harbour. We carried it down to the water, put on the seagull outboard then he , my mum ,and I and went across to the tip of Dawlish warren. Must have been around 75' or 76'. THANKYOU for posting.
The pedal car track is gone but still a playground there.Old lifeboathouse is listed now and a new station has been built at Maer rocks. The model railway is still in the same place.Swimming pool has been replaced with a new tenpin bowling alley.Elizabeth Hall was demolished .Cat and Fiddle caravan park still exists near Exeter. The Strand gardens was ripped to pieces 2 years back and pedestrianized but the cross stays.Any questions on Exmouth I will know as I have lived here 60 years so far
Thank you for the information on the video....excellent memories...
Great video of my town.I was born at 12 Morton Road. The docks was my playground
Cant remember the Pony incident.Next year, the lease on the model railway expires so that is possibly going.Exmouth still has the donkey rides and swing boats that have always been near the clock tower. There is to be a shelter in the Strand but it faces opposition right now.
I remember the Ladybird shop but that closed many years ago.Hodges went along with Waltons and Thomas Tucker.I was born in a guest house in Morton Road. That is now a rest home
Can't believe we drove across that
Has anyone got footage of the old wooden shanties!! I remember a little old lady who lived in one, I'd so love to see footage... All a distant memory, very sad seaside towns will never have that feel again. Thank you in advance for any info
@@tartantony08 thank you so much, it brings back so many memories, I can remember shanties being right by the literally right on the water, and the people who lived there, like the people above were proper Exmouth locals... It's so sad that the whole way of life is gone, so so sad. Thank you so much for directing me to the video, really sad.
Many thanks for the reply. My aunt used to work in Exmouth at the Ladybird shop back in the 70's. Such a beautiful place , we didn't get to holiday there in August as planned but next spring will be there for sure. Do you have any recollections of the incident with the Dartmoor ponies being mutilated in 1976 or thereabouts. I read about it some years later. Again thanks for your reply.
And mine!!! xx
just noticed the unit where he got the boat and outboard, 2:37 , the unit on the right hand side ...Anyone know what happened to the little roadway circuit for children, along the sea front , behind the model railway and old lifeboat house?. I remember there were little roads mapped out and you got to use bicycles or pedal go carts. Seams to have gone looking @google earth , what happened to Exmouth models? used to be just off from the square gardens in the middle as I recall. roll on 23/8/13.
I used to go to exmouth from 84-89 and remember it well. Used to stay in the bungalows at shelly beach, the busy docks were a major draw for me. Saw many many vessels here and I loved it. The area was amazing. Got to know the staff here pretty well. Sad that it was all razed to the ground and "redeveloped". Thanks for sharing this great footage.
