skinny jeans definitely died among the "fashion aware" crowd but for the general population that isn't so fashion focused, skinny jeans or rather slim fit jeans are a staple that's going to remain in peoples wardrobes forever

Slim jeans are not going to be in people's wardrobes forever. Just like when skinny jeans became a hit in youth culture circa 2009 (in NYC), it will take awhile for the mainstream to adopt it and leave behind their baggy jeans.

Football (soccer) kits have always been fashionable in countries where it is the predominant sport. I think the reason it appears as if it’s just a recent thing is due to the recent increase in popularity of soccer in America.
Myself and many people I know have been wearing football kits as part of our outfits long before I heard the term “bloke core”

  • @mister_manager

I think the fashion forward people are rarely the ones following trends. You see this a lot with the fashionable older people in NY, who seem to have a bit more fun and creativity with their outfits than the kids at places like FIT, who seem a bit terrified to wear something that's not in season.

As a Gen X stylish older New Yorker, I understand what you mean in this message. Now this is not a contradiction, more of an add on to clarify. I’ll quote one of my favorite influencers Brown Girl Chee “Fashion & Style are two different things”. Style is embedded in one’s dna it seems, fashion follows a forecast and determines the looks of the next season.

i agree with the last take about skinny jeans not really dying. while yes a lot more fashion oriented people are wearing wider pants, there’s still a lot of people who wear skinny jeans. as someone who works at a grocery in the middle of my city, i see a lot of different people on a daily basis. with a wide variety of people comes a wide variety of different kinds of pants and i can say that a lot more people than you might expect still wear skinny jeans. skinny jeans still work well on certain body types and for some people are still the most comfortable style of pants they wear. the average person is going to wear the clothes that make them feel the most comfortable and make them look the best.

That was me, this is exactly the angle i was coming from. On top of that, they are pretty popular with plus size individuals because of how stretchy they tend to be. I still see them everywhere i go. I do agree with drew that most of those people definitely aren't being intentional with their decisions, so he's right from that angle. Nonetheless, i see women in my family who do enjoy clothes but definitely do not engage with fashion spaces online still wearing them in thoughtfully curated outfits. Even i personally still prefer skinny jeans over wide fit jeans because they just flatter me better because the latter makes me look really short.

    • @treiricketts7572
      @treiricketts7572 Před 5 měsíci

I think the caveat is that skinny jeans will come back in a way that is still more fashion forward than what you see "normal" people wearing today. Those outfits will still look dated even if they are technically wearing skinny jeans. And people who have settled into wider fits today will also start to look dated as well.

  • @ProBenchWarmer
    @ProBenchWarmer Před 6 měsíci +71

On the skinny jeans discussion: if a product is still being purchased by a consumer, then the product still has a base to sell to. So if people, fashion conscious or otherwise, are still buying skinny jeans (no matter if it's trending or not), then skinny jeans never died. Acknowledgment of that does not detract from the fact that baggier jeans has taken off as a trend. But trends ebb and flow. Skinnier jeans have been consistent since jeans were created. They just are not trendy, and that's okay.
I think this wave of quick consumer content has really skewed style into a "this style means these clothes" kind of approach rather than the personal portion of what makes style unique. I hope that this hyperconsumerism gets people to think "whoa, this shit is too much" and focus on what they enjoy rather than the next new hot shit.

    • @1Skorpia

Stretch skinny jeans are very flattering on women and Midwest women will absolutely NEVER give them up. No to crazy huge baggy jeans unless its balanced tastefully. .

  • @rami9274

skinny jeans never died, they just were no longer on trend, and ppl wanted to started moving away from them during the dad shoe trend. they're still very stylish and fashionable. they obviously aren't still at 2015 fear of god level. I think bootcuts/flares are a good indication that some ppl are moving back to slimmer pants. That being said, i think for many fashion ppl, skinny jeans are reserved for boots and slim silhouettes.

I feel a point you’re missing abt the sports aesthetics is that the World Cup ended out 2022 so ppl got into soccer kits for ‘23 and the Olympics is coming in 2024. Most of fashion is inspired by the things going on around us. Major events like the Olympics and the X Games will play a factor esp internationally. I can see biker jerseys making a breakthrough for that reason

Concerning the skinny jeans and dressing with intention part of the vid: I'm totally with you. Tho I believe that nothing ever dies, it just vanishes in the so fast paced world of fashion. Doesn't matter if we're talking skinny jeans, bow ties or heck even sneakers. It might fall out of trend and not be worn by the ones who consider themselves fashionable, but some people are always gonna be here and rock those pieces. Simply because of necessity. But also because of individuality, that is becoming such a big thing now. And I am damn grateful for it. Have a great start to the new year man, your videos made me smile and think trough a lot of stuff that happened 🙏

    2024:
    - Military core will be on the rise.
    - Maximalism & Doom Spending on clothing/accessories.
    - Photo dumps may die down. IG users will take time to make their feeds look aesthetically pleasing through fashion.
++ I’m also quite curious about the FOMO that may arise amongst Gen Z & Gen Alpha due to overconsumption of content - Especially now that fashion is mainstream and inclusive.

    Here's my hot-ish take for 2024:
Earlier this year I was seeing a lot of the skirts over pants trend and had this kind of random thought. What is one were to style shorts over pants and I don't mean the leggings and sporty shorts -kind but dare I say in a more fashionable way. I kind of just pushed the thought away though as I couldn't really find anyone doing it. But just recenty (I think in the last month) I've actually come across this. Okay it has literally been like two people but I'm excited to see if more people will do it. Definitely expecting it in a rather baggy sihouette but we'll see...

I disagree with the skinny jean prediction. The people saying this are treating the baggy bottoms trend like it came out of nowhere, but there was a lead up. Relaxed top silhouettes came into the picture, oversized tees, hoodies, jackets, etc. When this happened people were still very much wearing joggers & skinny jeans. What drove the baggy bottoms wave & started to make it “saturated” outside of the fashion community was comfort, the same thing that drove relaxed top silhouettes. Going back to wearing a fitted silhouette after being comfy a n d fashionable for years now? I don’t see it happening.

Watching you talk just reminds me of Bob Ross so much, in the sense that I think, "Yeah, it's impossible for this guy to shout". Also, I take your content to heart, such as the 'How to Grow Up Your Style' video.
Also, your fits are just cool to look at. Got me over here taking notes and helping me find my own style. As a 14 year-old boy, you and Frugal Aesthetic are the two people I find the most enjoyable to watch : You give deep, genuine and fair dives on topics in the fashion world, a lot of topics being trends that I'm unfamiliar with due to my lack of tuning in with social media, and Frugal is just funny.

The last take was interesting. You spoke about 2 groups, people dressing intentionally and being more fashion forward and then people dressing for functionality. But I think there are plenty of people who dress intentionally and care about fashion without being "fashion forward" (trend driven) and so they're not so heavily dictated by what's in and what's out. Skinny jeans aren't as popular as they used to be but they still make up a high percentage of what retailers have available for sale so they can't be that unpopular. Skinny jeans aren't trendy but people are still wearing them.

I think that skinny jeans are IT for a lot of communities that are actually quite fashion-forward. As you've said, context matters. Skinny jeans are not for me personally, but a friend of mine is a huge alt music fan, goes to shows, etc etc. Skinny jeans are a statement to them as a part of belonging to that community and messing with gender at the same time, so there is undoubtedly intentionality there. What I think would be more fitting is that tiktok doesn't always show how people who care about their individual fashion but not fashion as a larger conversation dress.

Being the 938th comment about skinny jeans rsrs - As a Brazilian from South region (completly away from fashion trend cities) I tend to observe that the skinny jeans never died among millenials and older generations because we've being programmed our whole life that this and the slim cut are the right Path. Fortunatly the GenZ is ripping this thought apart as confort is now something non-negotiable on fashion, but we still have this "older" portion of the market share that denies wider garments.

You live in New York now so if you spend a weekend night out in the lower east side (Kind Regards, Pianos, etc), you'll see the "swag era" re-done in a very nostalgic, fashionable and trendy way. Not for everyone, but it kinda can mix with some of the opium core looks. 2000's goth meets 2000's oversized t-shirts, jorts, etc.

The way you think about fashion really is the way everyone should. There are people that dress because they have to to fit in society, and other that dress because they want to express themselves. Therefore, you should not necessarily wear what is trendy : I believe trends are here to help people discover more and more different styles, so they can find what matches with their personality. If everybody understand this, everyone would less hate on each other and the world would be a slightly better place to live in.

Skinny jeans happened when jeans were able to add stretch to them but skill look and feel like quality jeans, and simultaneously people wanted a fitted silhouette. They consequently never went completely out of fashion For many people because of their practicality- especially among those who dress for function: who say walk a lot or bike a lot. Baggy pants get soaking wet when walking in weather and catch on your bike chain and get torn (and snugging them down is not cool-looking). And the most lasting fashion trends always have a core element of practicality to them. A great comfortable sneaker. A down puffer. A shirtdress. A pea coat.

on the topic of raw denim and how you have to build the character of the denim, people would rather buy the product that already has character. That idea or proclivity is a microcosm of a larger norm where people are buying into a style instead of forming their own personal styles, emulating people that have lived lives and show that through clothing. Instead of forming themselves, many people opt to buy the likeness of someone or something else

I used to wear a ton of skinny jeans but I actually fucked with the wide jean trend because I have big ass quads and thighs and I always looked like I was choking my lower half when I rocked skinnies as a guy. It was nice to actually buy pants that fit well on me in general this year lol.

Dont forget about the pay wall for raw denim. Even in Japan most brands are expensive. As soon as you leave japan good raw denim just gets way to expsive. Even in taiwan i would have to pay double the price from what i paid in japan for a momotaro or suggar cane jeans.

As a clothing seller, I can't tell you trends beyond what people are buying. Grungy distressed workwear, vintage graphic tees, 80s and 90s sports related, Preppy Golf wear, and hoodies. I sell everything, and that's what moves.

I am very curious to see what peoples personal style developments turn into in the coming year. I feel like so much of the stuff I see feels too similar. Could be the algorithm, though. It seems like personal style and developing personal style is something that most people struggle with if they don’t have a very clear identity of who they are that’s not to say that people can’t change or develop or evolve because I think that we do it all the time, for the last few years, it feels that a lot of men’s fashion has become stale or at least what is popular.

I mean football gear has been embedded in the fashion world for ages with the old football shoes like Gazelles and German army trainers etc which have heritage in football and football culture. The jerseys are just a more literal piece of football gear/culture that has emerged.

Cycling jerseys are kind of tricky to style because they are elongated to accommodate cyclists. Unless someone alters them for style over substance it could work. That being said I’ve had some vintage cycling jerseys in my ebay cart for a while now lol.

I think it is always funny, when sports gear enters mainstream fashion. I’m playing football and I’m cycling. My indoor training shoes are adidas samba I have a pair since 4 years now, they are durable as f… when u clean and maintain them properly. Also 8bar bags and Rapha gear is extremely durable. Last year I was in trend because of my sambas and my home club jersey. This year it will maybe repeat?

What's up drew, how you do?
    Couple of thoughts.
    1) You bring an interesting point regarding geography. What is trending in NYC isn't what is trending in the midwest, so when commenters from the midwest are making observations, they will have a vastly different perspective from you. It appears to me that a trend happens in a location-agnostic place first (aka the internet, as it is not constrained by physical space and is easier to spread), and then in major cities like NYC and Tokyo.
    2) Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I have to guess, it feels like you joined the fashion crowd around late 2019? Circa 2016-2018, raw denim caught on fire and everybody around Spring Street station was wearing some form of selvedge denim. Although raw denim appears niche, is less comfortable, and is more expensive, it is very possible for it to reach mainstream popularity again.
America's obsession with individualism and raw denim's ability to create a unique individual stamp on a piece of clothing will make raw denim come back to the mainstream again and again. Prior to 2017-2018, older enthusiasts have informed me that they had a similar popularity decades ago which blew my mind, because at the time, I felt that raw denim was so niche!
    3) Hope you're enjoying your stay in the city and I hope we get to keep you ;)

I bought baggy jeans and never wore them. They make me look huge. My best asset is the ratio between my hips/thighs and chest. I will wear flares or bells but the butt and thigh has to be fitted. Bring back skinny’s I’m down💯

As a person who dressing with intent and practicality I would have to say your wrong. I think the demographic of folks who are quite a bit older jean variations never excluded skinny jeans. We are less trend prone and dress more appropriately for not only our body shape but also for our lifestyle. I think people tend to only live in their bubble and forget there are people who are into fashion in all age demographics.

Totally agree it’s about personal style… I’m sick of the ridiculous off the chart pace of trends… i know what pleases me visually and if it’s not on trend I really do not care. In fact I would rather not wear the latest trend… i do not want to look like a trend tragic! So this may sound contradictory but it’s not 🧐re the bike attire… Conner Ives did a really great range of upcycled bike jersey dresses… the graphics are pretty unique as is the functionality. Ticks both my main boxes of form and function!😉… Hello from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺🦘🦘🦘🐨👋🏼
