Urdu is a minority language spoken as native language by Muslims right fro Delhi UP in northern Bihar in east to Telengana and Karnataka in south. So please tell which region then do Urdu belongs to? Where we like it or not Urdu is the languages of Muslims of most of Muslim Minority regions of South Asia hence suffering to this day as unlike Gujarati Marathi Punjabi Bengali Etc Urdu is not confined to one specific region nor is it a majority language of any state of india .

I have learned Urdu all by myself. I had bought a Hindi Urdu dictionary but wasn't satisfied as many of the words I looked up weren't there, so I decided to learn Urdu and now I can easily get the meaning of the word by writing it in Google translate. The beginners will face some problem discerning between the sounds but with practice they will get the hand of it.

Language changes with time, distance , across the river , etc . As regards Urdu being associated with Muslims , I would say and second JAs comment that urdu is the language of India . This I say as a Pakistani.
It is a fact that urdu was not patronized in India as their own language , after the partition. I have worked in Gulf and my Malyali Christian boss once told me " Muslims speak Urdu well. He will speak Marhati but speak Urdu at home " I also observed that Muslims from Kerala spoke better Urdu than Common Mayslis . I even met some Muslims from eastern states who spoke good Urdu .
But I noted that UPians did not speak , read and write better Urdu , as I expected. Most of my Indian relatives could not read and write Urdu . But I also knew people whose Urdu was better than mine. but they were few. JA is very witty and I like his discourse..

Urdu has been worst hit in northern India esp UP. %age of Urdu speakers have declined drastically in past decades from being a language of over 60-70% of Muslims in 1980s to only 25% now. You are correct my own relatives in India esp the younger generation can not read and write it

The truth is Pakistani parents can not get their children to learn urdu and speak Urdu , they all speak English, or mix of English and Urdu, not really the pure urdu , or read urdu poetry! It's not Indian brother, it's Uttar Pradeshi. India didn't exist in the 11th century. If Muslims from central Asia didn't conquer South Asia Urdu would never have been born. The Turko-Afghans of the Delhi Sultanate from the Mumluk Dynasty spoke Dari which is an Iranic language. They preferred Farsi so when Farsi mixed with Khariboli, a native Uttar Pradeshi language, Urdu was born.
