@Ronald Mcdonald Yeah, I've seen, that approach many times. It's the set up for that approach I hadn't seen before; coming in over LGA and across Manhattan at Central Park, then a left turn over the Hudson. Great close up views of the city.
To avoid conflict with Kennedy and Newark, the approach to LaGuardia often amounts to a descending spiral over the city and a final base turn that is much like landing on an aircraft carrier! For that reason pilots sometimes call the airport the USS LaGuardia :) In this example you can see Citi Field and the tennis complex at the very beginning and then again at the end - first from about 5,000 feet and then from a few hundred feet on final approach. Really fantastic!! So many famous landmarks are visible!
@@petersurapine6725, yes, that's right. It's a great view of it. That world's fair's heyday was in the 1930s, and it remains a historical landmark not to be tampered with.
@, we didn't circle all the way around Manhattan like this when I was on a flight approaching LGA, but that was also back in 1998. I remember us decending towards Manhattan while heading northbound, first over Staten island, then got a good view of the Statue of liberty, then over the lower East river seeing the banks of lower Manhattan (got a good look at the still existing twin towers), then over the Brooklyn bridge while merging northeast and then seeing the East river, Roosevelt island, and a good view of the Manhattan Midtown skyline while over Queens, and then the last part of the descent was quite similar to this video, I recall. Made a sharp left and saw Flushing Meadows, the World's fair, and the stadium. We didn't do the full circle over Manhattan like in this video, kind of wish we did.
These videos of LGA approaches thrill me to the bone. I often drink my morning coffee while replaying them. That is how much these high quality videos enrich my daily life. Thank you to you all.
I've lived here and flown in and out for almost 40 years. I STILL get that rush seeing Manhattan when coming into LGA. There's nothing like New York--nothing.
Right it is. They also have helicopter rides circling around Manhattan for tourists. The heliport is on the East river in Lower Manhattan (I'm explaining this, of course, to non-native New Yorkers who may not already know). I just think that there's no point in wasting your money on the helicopter if you got a window seat while circling Manhattan upon landing. Sometimes with heavy traffic backup, you may circle more than once.
I've flown into Lagaurdia one time and the only time I visited NYC. I've been to some big cities in the US, but they didn't prepare me for just how big NYC is. Even the buildings that appear small are 20+ stories. It simply is a massive city and every American should visit it at least once in their lives.
I agree with you. I have visited NYC a bunch of times, and there really is no city quite like it. It just buzzes with energy. It is a wonderful place to visit.
@TheMadScotsman mckay I've been to London and flew into Heathrow. From the air, it is in no way comparable to NYC in terms of perception, though London, area wise like you say is larger, they just don't have as many skyscrapers.
A 360 degree trip to LGA with an amazing tour beyond Manhattan, crowned by a short visual approach on the runway from the south to the west.... VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE. Yep, you did not loose your day.
That was fantastic! Thanks for posting. So interesting. (One doesn't quite realize how big the place is until you see if from a view like that.) Spectacular! Thank you.
This footage is remarkable. Watching this was like taking an air tour over Manhattan. I spotted so many recognizable sights. What luck the cinematographer had when shooting this.
I was on a very similar approach to LGA last July, except we went a little further south and west so we got a good view of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Plus it was about 8:00 so the sun was setting and there was a beautiful golden glow on everything. It was spectacular.
This brings back memories of my first time in NYC. What a thrill flying into this airport. To see the Statue of Liberty from the air brought a tear to my eyes. And seeing Shea Stadium was so cool! We were in a holding pattern for around 45 minutes so I got quite a tour of the city. So thankful I had a window seat!
It shows that there's a bright side to everything, even circled delayed holding patterns. And no matter how many times you see this gigantic magnificent city, it never gets boring. NY's the center of the universe
Very smooth flying. Awesome video. Awesome pilot. Over Queens: the Unisphere globe from the 1964 World's Fair at 6:30. The nuns in my school took us there on a class trip to see Michaelangelo's sculpture "Pieta."
I saw that coming back fro. St Louis. It was cold and misty.Wonderful sight .Along with flying into Sydney probably one of the best approaches to an airport
I hate to turn this conversation into that, but I haven't flown in LGA since the Twin Towers were still there. I used to do it every summer, returning from summer vacation in Florida. I remember looking down at the city and having that feeling of being home. Nice memories.
the freedom tower looks amazing from up there ...looks different when you on the ground ..(still amazing ) but from the air looks amazingly different. and of course second best is my beautiful citi field.
WOW...never saw an approach like that one...awesome! Still makes me crazy seeing planes so close to the TWC...I was just there & it was spooky to see the planes so close. GREAT video..thanks
I recently stayed at the World Center Hotel with a terrace literally overlooking the WTC site on Liberty street. Everytime a plane flew overhead, I always noticed and was surprised at the flight path.
@D'Afrique Rousseau Tbh I'm sad they wanted to call it that. Nothing's more invigorating than naming what comes out of the fallen building, The Freedom Tower. And it has a height of 1776 feet. I'm still going to call it that, it's our freedom.
Normally I'm an aisle person, but flying into LGA I take the window on the left side. Amazing views. The landing is cool. looks like your right on the water.
This approach is called Runway 31 Expressway visual. The left tun at the stadiums is where the fun starts. Beautiful indeed. This must have been a DC9, or B717. Distance between wing and engine is too short to be an MD80, but for the quiet engines, my money is on B717. Yes, the people on the right side missed out, except for the trip down the Hudson river. NJ on one side and NYC on the other. Great memories.
