I like how Godzilla went from a dark metaphor on the atomic bomb where he looks like a mushroom cloud that has scales to look like a burn victim to "I'm going to beat the shit out of a lobster"
And one shot a condor

I swear to god from what my parents tell me my first word was Godzilla ( I didn’t pronounce it right ) and my first spelled word was Godzilla this was before I was even in preschool, they still talk about it to this day
My first Godzilla movie was when I was very young too, it was actually the '98 Zilla film. I have gone through and watched a lot of the Heisei movies, only two left on that list to watch, and all of the Millennium and after movies. This video really is amazing.

@@CynicalJustin One thing is missing though: the notes on the films 'climate' and important plot points. Heisei series for example was much more dramatic than any other Godzilla movie but 1954 and Shin, moreover it put more effort into Godzilla's facial acting even than later movies, and had several moments that concentrated on Godzilla's psyche and drama, sans the poor human acting and unpolished scripts.

Spoilers below:
Shin Godzilla was amazing. I am not entirely sure about the human looking hybrid stuff coming out of the tail at the end, but I absolutely loved the origin as some weird ocean amoeba that mutates, tadpoles and evolves throughout the movie. Even the derpy looking legless salamander form was intimidating in its recklessness (and lets face it, adolescent amphibious creatures are big eyed and derpy looking, so it was realistic). All around he was just badass.
A lot of people took issue with the American stealth bombers being able to injure his back, but they forget that he is still evolving into the true Shin Godzilla. I say true "Shin" Godzilla because even while vulnerable, this creature was insanely destructive - not world ending Burning Godzilla levels, but damn. His beam was insane, like more of a cutting laser weapon rather than the explode on contact stuff he had before - instantly slicing through the city as he attempted to control himself (it looked like once he started, he couldn't really contain his own destructive output yet - after all this is implied to be this Godzilla's first ever atomic breath). Anyway the point about him still evolving - you can tell from his skin that with each evolution (at least with the last one), the dark armor like skin was covering more of the red, exposed fleshy tissue he almost exclusively had when he first appeared. Where the bombs hit on his spine is still red, exposed flesh (you can literally see it). He's not done evolving yet.
Speculation stuff:
I also think this is why he can shoot his beams from his tail and his spines (or rather, between his spines) - I think it is literally bursting through his skin from wherever it is generated, which is then healed after. The tip of the tail looks extremely fleshy throughout the entire movie even when most of it is covered by his new, blackish armor skin. So the energy can funnel through the armored section of his tail and burst from the still unarmored tip. Same thing with the crazy back lasers - his spine is still very exposed (as seen by the bombs damaging him) and so the power is blasting randomly through whatever fleshy bits it escapes from - when his mouth was closed and he stomped, the energy could only burst from his exposed, fleshy back (which served his purpose of shooting into the sky). You notice that when he started shooting his breath, he could not stop until he fully unloaded and then "shut down" so to speak. Even though it was directed at his threat initially, afterwards he seemed to randomly spew what remained throughout the city before his quick hibernation, and he chose to do so through his mouth and tail - probably because he damages himself less that way.
As for his actual armor, if the above is correct - then his skin is not actually evolving to protect him from external damage so much as to keep his own internal energy/nuclear power or whatever contained. In fact I'd wager the event that set his evolutionary cycle off in the first place is continually damaging him (energy buildup, etc.), while also continually healing him and evolving him to resist this damage/his own power. It's evolving to protect itself, from itself, in a way, which will inevitably result in some ultimate final form until, like Burning Godzilla, it melts down in its own personal entropy.
Funny enough, even though there doesn't seem to be a direct relation - Monster Planet's Godzilla looks like it could be a final evolution for Shin. If you look at the sort of striatic and unnatural way the skin is laid out, and how it's otherwise very rock-like in texture, and compare it to Shin's final form in his movie, it seems quite similar. Even his teeth now look less like actual teeth and more like evolved protrusions, which would follow the evolutionary cycle Shin seemed to abide by. I doubt this is the case, but it's still a cool potential representation of Shin's maybe-next-form.
EDIT ::: Sorry for editing this into a novel. I have a bad habit of posting, *then* proof reading, and editing, over and over again until satisfied. Not sure why that habit started, but yeah lol.
Whoops, forgot one very important thing that changes the Tail speculation a little bit (not the spines though).
His tail had a face on the end of it, before the stuff at the end of the movie. Kind of its own organism in a way - so that's why he could shoot a beam from the tip, not just because it's fleshy/unprotected and thus bursting through it. I don't think that he has faces between his spines though, lol, but I could be wrong.
It would be cool to see him fight against monsters that were once a part of him, and evolved differently. Like maybe his Tail breaks off at some point (he will regrow one) and become Ghidorah or something. It is nearly as massive as he is, after all (and a bit longer). In a way it would also reference the "Shin" part of his name.
Finally! Someone who get's the whole background of shin being an unkillable/evolving organism. It will never stop evolving. and the yashiori plan (coagulation freeze plan) is just a short term solution, because after goro maki giving them a riddle (the oragami riddle and ang a message saying "do as you please") is a clear indication that the professor knows that there is no long term solution in killing shin gojira but they can only stop it, temporarily. That's why shin gojira is a masterful film.
Mr.Anomaly Dude, write a BOOK! That was amazing!
Can you write a Longer comment.
I appreciate your take on this and your observations :)
I think the original Gojira is a film as classic and as memorable as the universal monster classics,’Frankenstein, Dracula’. The reason I think Godzilla will last forever, and I think many will agree, is that he can take any meaning, whether he is just a monster, an allegory for nuclear weapons, or a simple of mans destructive nature. For these reasons he will live forever, as the King of the Monsters
That weird shy guy - I think alot of people who grew up in the 60s, 70s and 80s have a different appreciation for Godzilla. We grew up with it. My lil sister's hubby thinks their stupid, but he didn't watch them as a kid. He's more serious and doesn't have as good a sense of humor as we do. I watch them because it will bring back memories of my childhood. Monster week on the 4:30 movie was Kaiju heaven as far as I was concerned. Creature Features and Chiller Theater on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, especially during the cold winters we get in the tri state are. My dad was a huge fan.
Yes
I was very pleasantly surprised when I watched the 1954 Godzilla for the first time as an adult, I wouldn't compare it to the Universal Monsters as much as I would compare it to a Hitchcock or Orson Welles movie. The performances are sophisticated, the symbolism is genuinely powerful. The subsequent movies may have been b-movie schlock, but the original Godzilla is a beautiful piece of cinema.

Man just that shot alone invokes a lot of somber emotions. This was Godzilla's final movie back in the Showa era and instead of him going out with a bang like he did in Destroy All Monsters or even in the previous movie, he's just wading in the water ever so slowly with his movements looking tired as the sun sets.
While Destroy All Monsters is said to be the final film of the show era (in universe) this movie was a really sad way to end his career.

Hello there, everyone! Just wanted to take some time to correct a few mistakes and give some clarifications considering I've gotten a few messages about them.
- Firstly, some people have been trying to tell me that I have been incorrectly stating the release of the original Gojira. As far as I can see, I got this one correct. It was released in 1954 as I state in the few. A few people have mistook my opening statement in the "Gojira Origins" segment, that being "It all began in 1945".
- Second, I made a mistake mentioning the winner of the battle of Godzilla vs. King Kong. Officially, there is NO winner in either regard. This was a rumor spread around at the time and it looks like I unfortunately was caught in the web. So apologies for that oversight.
- Next, I do talk about Godzilla 1998 being a hated film, but just because that is the case does not at all mean that you can't like the movie. Don't feel bad or ashamed for liking it at all. If you like it, that's your taste and you're not wrong for having it. The segment in the video isn't meant to completely rail on the movie, but to show the reception it got and transition that discussion to the next segment.
- Also, I have been told by a few that King Ghidorah and Kaiser Ghidorah are not the same thing. I'm still not entirely sure if this is the case, but I don't want to mislead any of you because of it. So just know that there is a possibility that they are meant to be completely different monsters.
- Oh, and that reminds me. I AM SO SORRY ABOUT THE MISPRONUNCIATIONS. I don't know how and I don't know why, but the thought of Googling around the find how to pronounce these monster's names correctly completely passed me by and I think this is one of my biggest mistakes. I just kind of sounded it out and never really batted an eye towards it. Sincere apologies for this one.
- Lastly, and here's the big one, in no way do I condone the actions the Japanese committed and in no way believe that the Japanese didn't have any fault in WWII.
Thanks for reading and if I catch anything else, I'll be sure to update or respond to this post!
*Edit*
- Another correction: In Mothra vs. Godzilla, Mothra did not lay two eggs before its death, but one egg that spawned two larvae.

I’m 30 and have always been a Godzilla fan. I’ve seen every movie. My favorite movie has to be the 2019 Godzilla king of the monsters. But every movie is amazing In it’s own right. The hesei era is my favorite
I’m sure my friends get tired of the many times I’ll randomly bring up Godzilla. I brought him up so much one of them asked why I talked about a giant monster so much.
I told them that watching Godzilla movies was the one time out of the entire day when no one bothered me. When homework didn’t cloud my mind. When my parents didn’t get on my ass for something I didn’t know I did wrong (at the time I was around 7 or 8). Watching Godzilla movies was awesome at a young age. I didn’t know this wasn’t real. I thought Planet X and Monster Zero were out there in space. I always wondered what if Godzilla walked over here instead of staying in Japan. I always thought we’d be invaded by giant Cockroaches or alien Gorillas.
Now I’m 21, still a huge fan, getting Godzilla shirts for Christmas, gift cards to the comic book shop and buying myself a collection of Godzilla films. I’ll probably act like a child, shaking with excitement when I’m an old man, either watching a Godzilla movie at home, or a new movie in theaters. I’ll raise my kid on all these old cheesy movies about a fire breathing monster.

I'm 65 and I still love Godzilla. I just did a rewatch of the 98 movie the other day. While there were things I didn't like about it (sorry it did look like a T-Rex and those were pretty darn close to being baby raptors), it was still a fun film and I liked it. I can never really not like a Godzilla film. I loved the 2014 and the 2019 films. I feel like a big kid when I see them. I don't think I'll ever get tired of them. I hope you feel the same way when you're old and gray too.

About three minutes in, and I had already hit the “like” button and subscribed to your channel- that’s a rarity for me. I have a lot of great Saturday afternoon childhood memories of watching Godzilla movies with my older brother and sister- it’s been about 40 years but those are some of my favorite memories. I had “Godzilla vs Megalon” on VHS 2 separate times, and wore out the tape on both of them from repeatedly watching them! My friends and I would drunkenly sing the “Jet Jaguar” theme at parties, laughing like loons- these movies were great for the imagination while growing up, and remained a lot of fun even as an adult.
So- I’m sorry for the
“War And Peace”-length comment, but I just wanted to tell you how incredibly enjoyable I found this video to be. Thank you for sharing all of your hard work with us, and for giving Godzilla the attention he deserves. Cheers!
This is the content that I love on CZcams, a in depth analysis about everything Godzilla you could ask for, taken time to make. Easily one of the best videos on CZcams.
Aw. Thanks a lot, man! That means more than you could imagine to me!
I love the real world history and events included in this video, great job 👍
Well executed.... As a Japanese myself, I would thank to Justine's fair point of view and remarkable mount of research.... Once more, Thank you!!
Love this clip. Expertly describes the history of Godzilla. OMG so many memories.
That was the most beautiful and most awesome video I've seen of Godzilla legacy. Thank you for making this. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for the comment! Will do!
Very well put-together video...Great research as well. Appreciate it, thanks ^ ^
WOW, just wow! I can't tell you how many times I rewound this, didn't want to miss a word. Instantly liked and subscribed. Thanks!
Thanks so much for making this! I recently grabbed the criterion blu ray to take a trip down memory lane, but now I'm diving deep. Fantastic job dude keep up the good work!
oh my god this is amazing
even bigger channels can't make such an effort like this one, good job !
The most comprehensive Godzilla video resource available. Great work.
Man this video was excellent I always wanted a condensed version of the full series thanks for this.
This video is simply amazing, compliments to the editing and music placement, you did a really excelent work!
I'm in college right now and I've had a Godzilla poster since I can remember thoughts.
it's been through alot of times. i have it hanging on my wall now as I'm graduating college. during high school I was working at a picture framing company and used my skills to frame it up and made it brilliant looking. i got it from my uncle on one of my dinosaur themed birthdays when I was just a little kid.
today I learn exactly what movie it came from. thank you, I'm glad to know it was in fact "Godzilla Vs destroyah", by your account one of the most well received in the series and the one where supposedly Godzilla DIES for good (shin Godzilla happens to be my favorite regardless).
thank you for bringing something that has been in my life for decades to life. it is the work of youtubers like you that can keep our history in perspective.
Honestly warms my heart to see stories like these. Thanks for sharing that!
@@CynicalJustin of course! you deserve it for all the hard work you put into this amazing video.
I'm actually just rented the movie tonight because of this!
Thank you very much! Hope you enjoy it! Certainly one of my favorites.
This video was a 100% worth 54 minutes of my time. great video loved every second of it
So recently I got into Godzilla, and I'm watching these to find out what's good, but I also enjoy anime, and I heard Your Name, and I started sobbing.
This video alone has made me sub to your channel. Godzilla is to me, and I'm sure to you and countless others, more than a movie monster: he is a childhood legacy full of awesome action, a symbol of hope, and a symbol of nature coming back to wreak havoc on humanity for the atrocities set forth by atomic energy and weapons.
Godzilla will go down in history as one of the most cultural icons in human history, not just in cinema history too.
But the sad and amazingly shocking truth behind my adoration for Godzilla is that I NEVER would have known about Godzilla if it hadn't been for Zilla in '98. Comparing the films, I still hold Godzilla 1998 in its own light as a movie that opened a world up to me that I shall always gush over. Zilla was always a terrible Godzilla, but the film itself wasn't at all too horrendous in my eyes. I saw it as a popcorn film, with no brains needed, and all it being a roller-coaster film, not a philosophical nightmare (nightmare in the sense of what Godzilla stands for).
So while I now look back and laugh at the Zilla production, I have to hold it closest to me and endearingly put it first in my line because its the best friend that never let me down, the navigation path that never led me astray, but led me to better routes.
Needless to say, you put a shit ton of time dissecting Godzilla's history, influence on humanity and what humanity has influenced on Godzilla's legacy. So I thank you for recognizing something that is more than a metaphor to atomic horrors or just a gigantic monster: he is a cultural icon, Japan's historical landmark to the horrors of man. He is too, Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Also a side note, I am ecstatic for what Legendary is going to do with the sequels to Godzilla 2014, and what Netflix is doing with Godzilla as an anime trilogy/series of films, and Shin Godzilla being more CGI than ever and offering another new arch in Godzilla's true Toho/Japanese routes.
I cried at this video for the memories and sad history of Godzilla. Long live the King!
pog mo thoin712 long live the king

THIS VIDEO IS A MASTER PIECE! THANK YOU FOR YOU DEVOTION
Wow! This was the best video I have seen on the history of Godzilla. Thank you
I've been a fan of Godzilla for a long time and have seen most of the movies, so when I saw this video show up in my feed, I had to watch it.
And now,... Subbed! After seeing the thought and effort you put into the history of Godzilla, you are someone worth following and watching.
From the beginning and to the conclusion it is a very good documentary . Very good work ! Thanks for posting it !
What an extraordinary video! Extremely good to see, it makes fans of our favorite giant go crazy, I've known Godzilla for years, but I got closer and became a fan of the creature since the 2014 movie, seeing all the great evolution of this icon is incredible, thank you so much for the amazing experience! Hugs from Brazil!
Just got here waiting eagerly for KOTM Blu-ray. Saw it in theaters twice as well as Godzilla in 2014. I've been a fan of Godzilla since I was 5. King of the monsters was the most fun I had in theaters and made me feel like a kid again. King of the monsters is what 1998 should of been but 21 years later we got a director who was a fan and gave us a movie the fans love.
_King of the Monsters_ was a fucking masterpiece!
Dawg. This video is super good. Well done, fellow Godzilla fan.
This was an amazing video. The feeling and vibe throughout the video was amazing with the Aid of the music and your commentary/ narrative. Awesome, subscribed and will look forward to your videos. Keep it up.
BBoyDrkNova Thank you very much! Took months of careful planning, recording, and other things so I'm glad you enjoyed it! Welcome aboard, friend!
Nice documentary... So many clever angles.
This was a great video. I just recently got into the series, and this has given me some really nice insight into it.
A truly amazing history of Godzilla. I'm definitely going to see Godzilla King of The Monsters this Friday.
Hey man this is phenomenal work put in. Thanks so much for making it. Im refreshing before i see king of the monsters!!!
Finally I've been searching for weeks for this type of timeline!!! 💪🏽👌🏽
wow, that was VERY good. thank you for your work on this!
What an incredible video, so much effort was done and it very well made. Not only that, but I have had a love and deep connection with Godzillla since I watched so many of his movies when I was younger, with my first Godzilla movie being “Godzilla vs King Ghidorah”, and whenever a brand new Godzilla comes in, I will view a childhood monster I loved for a majority of my life.
Even though I grew most of my Godzilla love with the Heisei Era (and i have an attachment with the era close to my heart bc it introduced me to the King of the Monsters) I have rewatched every single movie in the Showa and the original.
But in general, this is a well crafted and done video and it deserves very much the credit for how it explains the most beloved monster in all of cinema.
FatalGecko58 Thanks for the love, man. Means a lot.

The music of the original Godzilla film is still one of my favorite sci-fi soundtracks of all times. Up there with BH's of
Journey to the Center of the Earth.
idc what people say this is the best documentary i have seen
This is easily one of the best CZcams videos I’ve ever watched, idk how many times I’ve watched it at this point
Well thank you! I greatly appreciate those very kind words and that you'd come back to watch it more than once!

Oh hey there
Will you make a 2019 king of the monsters?
Wow so much effort, amazing!
This was an awesome and informative video. You really put the work in on this one. You got a like from me for sure.
Too much on the endings on each films, too little on script quality, execution, general climate of the films and crucial ideas. I've watched some of those and they were totally different even when they appear the same from the description in this vid. There is literally no comparision between each 'series' and often between each movie in each. Heisei era films for example were very dramatic, overall rather poorly done but with some excellent ideas and Godzilla scenes were very polished, in contrast to the scenes featuring human characters. In Millenium the 2000 was pretty good though corny, while vs. Megaguirus just screamed out how low the budget must have been. And Final Wars... Well, lets just state that one of the main characters was Joseph Stalin commanding a giant flying drill.
Well then why are you watching a Godzilla video if you don’t like any of the movies
This video directly goes to my favorites. Just wonderfull!
I recently saw Godzilla king of the monsters 2019 with a buddy who’s a huge Godzilla nerd. This vid was vary informative thank you for posting I better understand by buds love for this fire breathing lizard. 🥰🦖🔥⛩
