Very few guitar nerds have respect for Richard Lloyd, but homeboy played (sick as hell) lead guitar in Television, one of the original and best NYC Punk bands. He's been killing it since 1974 or so, and he obviously loves the guitar and knows a ton about it. So, that being said, RESPECT, listen, and learn.
He's one of the most influential players of the last 30 years.
There is so much scope and depth in the "Alchemical Guitarist", parts 1 &2, that it will take you years to appreciate and master. Well worth the effort.
Benjamin White hes intelligent as all get out...and I have nothing but respect
I loved his work with Television, it was exciting and fresh. Yes really
why do you say this ? Richard LLoyd is not considered one of the best guitarrist of all time? everyone respects and aknowledges his importance in rock n roll history , i think... lol
" that's the tritone. the tritone is the devil's interval, and he demands resolution. * stare * "
chiiilllllzzz
I feel like he's actually looking into my soul from the past right there.
Purple Haze!
Saw this comment and thought "ah, can't be that bad" but when he finally got to that bit....ummmm, dark as fuck!!!!!!
Oh, a tritone, I'm so scared.
His solo record Alchemy has become one of my most played albums.
Its really a great record and has some great stuff in it.
It Also helped me identify what he was playing in the television records.
Blue and grey has a days feel to it fir example.
completely underrated guitar player giving a super, chill lesson on the instrument here. thanks a lot richard
Richard Lloyd is one of the best things on one of the greatest rock albums of all time, Television's 'Marquee Moon'. Those who would diss him should bear that in mind.
I went in a different musical direction, but Richard and his playing with Matthew Sweet was one of the most profound influences on me (and he continues to be). It was a radical departure from the pattern/box-based stuff which so many guitarists stuck in, and a singular voice. And that's the thing - have something to say, say it well, sound like yourself and draw the listener in . Listening to him now, three decades on, still unveils new things. Eternal thanks, Richard Lloyd.
this guy is one half of the genius that made up that brilliant guitar shit on 'MARQUEE MOON'. Thanks Mr. Lloyd.
A fantastic and different way to understand intervals, with some relevant history.
Who the hell are all these people claiming that he's high and quack? I am a musician play classical, blues, jazz. There is nothing crazy about what he's saying, and I think he does a great job of explaining this foundation of theory.
"...we're now getting an under pinning...he he...I don't know...clouds brewing in the distance" "...well, now we're deep in it..." "...and this...it's got some plusses and minuses to it..." "...we get more and more troubled..." "...and he demands resolution..." My God, I have never heard music theory discribed so darkly. I love it!
Marquee Moon= masterpiece
Adventure=better masterpiece
@@atarirob C'mon man
@@burnlastsunday I'll die on this hill hahaha
This lesson makes me so happy
This guy is the coolest person in the dorkiest way possible and I mean that with genuine peace and love.
He is completely at home in his own skin, come what may.
Awesome guitar player. Saw his group a couple months ago totally blew me away! Great tone😎🔥🎸
Super knowledgeable !
actual, real life genius, all guitar players should study this man
What a great first lesson! Four thumbs up for Richard Lloyd. I wish my guitar teacher made as much sense.
Wow, Richard Lloyd! I have a new respect for Guitar World! I'd never really paid attention to Guitar World, before... but with content like this, you're now on my map!
I'm two minutes in and just LOVING hearing him talk. To be fair, I'm into all this esoteric "woohoo." Pythagoras, pentagrams, 4ths and 5ths... Growing up they tell you that all you have to do is practice and you will be good. Which is true, but music also has GEOMETRY. Which is something NO SCHOOLS teach and it's a damn shame. Can't wait to hear him play!
Read his book, "All Things Are Combustible", you'll love it!
Everything is about balance : a great lesson to learn.
He is dating my aunt and he always talks like this, very scientific
Devin Okeefe If you do see Lloyd again, please let him know that his *Alchemy* album is totally fucking bitchin'!! It almost as good as *Marquee Moon*.
Devin Okeefe If they break up tell him to call me :)
+dangerousrhythm77 sory for being late, one time me and my family went and spent a whole week in the hamptons with him and my aunt, he was one crazy dude, he would go outside and stair into the sun for like 30 minutes at a time, he called it sun gazing and he taught me and my sister how to do it my parents didnt like it though. he was really cool and nice, at the time i had no idea who he really was and my parents just told me he was in a band. he also told me this one story about how he used to do drugs with peter frampton which was cool. recently he got maried to my aunt and tyna and another member of the talking heads where there. also from what he said television screwed him over for the royalties to marquee moon. over all he was a pretty chill dude
+ClueSign they just got married, sorry
devin okeefe I'm happy for them! He is also an awesome painter/fine artist. He's been posting his art work on his Facebook page. Quite the genius.
Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine are a big reason that Wilco sounds the way they do. If you listen to the song "Marquee Moon" and "Friction," and then listen to Wilco's "Spider's (Kidsmoke)" and "Bull Black Nova," you'll see a definite connection.
"Impossible Germany" aswell! The latter half of that song is such a sublime tribute to Television, love Nels Cline's playing on that one
People! For the love of Pete, RELAX! He's not drunk, high or anything like that. I know lot's of musicians, and the more talented, the quirkier they are. People at this level of musical theory are operating on a different plane than the rest of us. It's just the way it is. When he says " well, now we're deep into it..." or something like that, it's his way of expressing how that note interacts musically with the rest. Brilliance. Sheer brilliance.
he's probably high
You have to know the physics involved in music and the instrument you want to play and master.
This lesson is a perfect introduction.
my favorite guitarist ever.
Just amazing
That is so good!!!!
It takes a lot of dedication. You're not going to be able to sight-read quickly, but when you can it's very rewarding just like anything else on the guitar.
Fantastic.
I like how he"s talks about the devil demanding resolution and then stares you the fuck down! hahah
This guy is very special.
when you realize this guy was basically taught by Hendrix, once removed, your brain explodes realizing that Hendrix was a HUGE influence on the NYC proto punk scene.
WTF are you talking about? He had a few second hand lessons from Jimi. He learned a couple of hammer-on's for crying out loud.
It's not like he went into the mountains and studied at the feet of the master like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill.
With his method. Its a good feeling to be able to go from. 1st fret 6th string to 24th fret 1st string without hesitation. He's like a stepfad. Not my dad but taught life RL. Rules!!!!
Richard Lloyd definitely is in a league of his own imho. Everybody knows about Television, but check out what Lloyd accomplishes on the albums and live performances he did with/for Matthew Sweet in the 9t's. He absolutely takes the Matthew Sweet-songbook to a higher level with his great style of guitarplaying.. :-)
Meet John Doe is another prize waiting to rediscovered again and again. Richard's playing and John's singing and songwriting is a double whammy not to be missed.
Lloyd with Robert Quine.. Matthew is lucky to have them on his records..
"We mock what we don't understand..." Danny Aykroyd
I love it
very cool guitar history/lesson :)
All right Richard !! and yours is an excellent teaching on the origins of musical harmony. However Pythagoras had his famous school in Italy, but not in the island of Sicily, but in Kroton that is in Calabria, where it all began ..... great
Croutons? (drool)
Wow. Richard Lloyd! Breaking it down. I dig.
Fuck I wish I'd seen this when I was 19...absolutely brilliant!
KILLER tone on the second part
Ive never heard of this guy, but wow, bridging music and philosophy, this dude rocks! XD
Music is both an art and there is "science" The mathematics/science of vibrations is inherent in the music.
love his brain
Wonerful!
An alt-rock pioneer. Everyone should listen to the landmark album, Television's "Marquee Moon".
Ovvio! Ma forse sarebbe troppo bello
more of this plz guitarworld
mind blown
brilliant
Anybody who doubts Richard Lloyd's chops should listen to "Field of Fire" from his solo album of the same name. Lloyd is a monster guitarist, his work with Tom Verlaine and Television seminal. Listen to his solo on "Days" (Television: Adventure). Just a perfect bit of playing.
Richard Rocks
listen children!!!!! THIS IS THE MAN WHO PLAYED ON ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME : MARQUEE MOON.. the guitar is absolutely genius , one of a kind in pop rock history. So children. pls be quiet and listen.. berh
Devil demands resolution! lol, this guy is amazing.
i need to find the dvd set. sadly tough to find in 2023.
Damn Richard is a professor!!
I have recently learned there are 5 string theories at least 1 involves string VIBRATION we are all honored to know Richarx
cool video
I imagine this is exactly what goes on in his living room by himself, no cameras.
Man Rick rules.
while Tom Verlaine's vocals are somewhat outdated, Richard Lloyd's riffs are truly timeless and what makes Marquee Moon incredible. Such an underrated player.
Im partial to most vocals on most tracks except torn curtain, can't stand the last song on marquee moon
I suddenly understand Close Encounters of the Third Kind!
E proprio adesso apprendo dell'abbandono da questa terra di Tom, i love you
Nice
if you're lost: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_intervals_in_5-limit_just_intonation, though to be thorough, we don't actually use just intonation on modern instruments (unless you count the vocal chords of barbershop quartets): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_temperament#Comparison_to_just_intonation
real intellect!
richard lloyd is a really smart guy, and very cool, if not very eloquent
Bowzr. Introkit
brilliant. you dont need to know this to write a good song. but I love Richard
yeah buddy
Drunk? No. Crazy? Absolutely! :D
mike584. Now thats funny
I think he's kinda cool. And for music theory: I have read Dalhaus' The Idea of Absolute Music. This is chrystal clear in comparison. :)
Agree this is one of the band members of telvision...marquee moon...what can i say..👂👂👂
This was Great esp "the devil's tritone" (opening riff of Black Sabbath of course)
A very cosmic lesson! ahaha
devil's interval demo also sounds like Dazed n Confused by L Zep start
Man I was going to point out the same thing hahahaha
He made me feel uncomfortable and guilty lol
Great intro lesson by the way, usually skip long videos, this one I couldn't skip a second.
Mortanious. Guilty as theory
Starting to study guitar because of this man. He's so damn cute, reminds me of some series/cartoon character but I can't put my finger on which one
An amalgam of The Dude from Big Lebowski, Rick from Rick and Morty, and Roger from American Dad?
@@burnlastsunday good one haha, I definitely didn't see the dude
@@sarahlelievre6391 Well... Like... Fortunately... Y'know... I have my brain training on a very rigorous... Drug regimen... Man....
8:21-8:30
the tri tone sounds like sepiroth's theme one winged angel haha
This is why he made Marquee Moon and you didn't - you don't think like this.
The other thing is. Triad voicings combined. Yes you can play anything. Only limitations. Your ambition
The ratio of my balsac hit the marquee moon. A little to da left ..peace
How the sounds feel.........
I dunno man. I'm confused. I just enjoy playing
The cramps
Lets not forget inovator.
Where's that tritone example he plays from? I'm sure I've heard it somewhere but just can't bring it to my mind..!
MitjaShi purple haze!
8:18 barh naarh naaairrr naaaairr.....nah no noooow.
Everyone is mentioning Television, as they should but I love Lloyd just from his work with Matthew Sweet
his picking in 10:25 is kinda similar to Marty Friedman, or is it just me?
thalliam. Now That's funny
8:22 lloyd ur scaring me man
He changed my life. I tell friends. I can play anything what's on the agenda. They are befuddled. IM NOT
Ominous pause after "the devil demands resolution"
I come here every once and a while and watch him up until he says “undernourished gormandizers”, have a laugh and go about the rest of my day
@ANIM0SI7Y Sarcasm my friend, sarcasm. ;)
Why is it the devils interval?
SO INTERESTING ....BUT WHAT THE FK DID HE JUST SAY?????
If you listen he says it...
It's "Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers" Although here, Lloyd says "undernourised".
Mike Larson. Now thAts 😋
Now thats yummy
Stepdad. Lol sorry. I love the beginning Pythagoras. 1string. CLASS IS IN SESSION. THERE WILL BE A QUIZ LOL
My former guitar teacher.
was he like this in private
I don't know, I've been taking a music theory class for a while and I'm pretty sure the way we notate music needs to be fixed because it is way overcomplicated.
Now thats funny
@MitjaShi Really? or are you being sarcastic? If you really are asking, it's the opening for Purple Haze. If not, then I fell victim to a troll. Only you know for sure.
0Heavy0Metal0. Too funny
@asaskald lol All I was saying was, I PERSONALLY do not believe science belongs anywhere near any art form. You play what you feel...You don't do meaningless calculations. You Play what you feel.
What you feel is still based on hundreds of years of musical development. A pop song is as international as a chemical formula.
