- Buckle up, we've got a spicy one for ya today! It's finally time to depart our beloved Tuamotu Islands. Our haul out date was scheduled, our provisions were getting dismal, and we had soooo much to do to prepare Delos for being on the hard for 9 whole months. So we set off and pointed our bow west, and little did we know what was in store for us...the forecast for the wind looked fantastic, but there would be quite a bit of swell. Nothing that was worrying though, and certainly nothing compared to some of the extreme conditions we've encountered over the years. But it's been a while since we've been out in seas like that, and we were in for a bit of a rude awakening. We got absolutely rocked out there. But even if it was pretty uncomfortable, we were FLYING along and we even caught a GIGANTIC mahi! So we're going to call this one a win for sure! It's good to get a little flogging out there every now and then to remind us we are true sailors đ

I love the mixture. I think you guys nail it. blue water sailing, amazing anchorages, boat work, cooking, chore days.. friends, beach days, diving, snorkeling.. probably my favorite are the days you just spent in those amazing clear waters and good anchorage, and friends. I can't get enough of that clear water. when you said that you might not be back for a long time, that kind of broke my heart. I'm older, I have health issues. I live vicariously through channels like yours. I've had health issues my whole. life, but did have a few good years living in Yosemite, and we worked hard and played hard. I have a kind of quirk. one of my favorite things to do was play hard with my friends, whether is was rock climbing, hiking, skiing, surfing, whatever, and then make food together. I love food, and I love sharing it. So I appreciate when Y'all show what you are cooking and eating.. especially when it is something special. like that mahi mahi. I also watch the channels of people who hike the long trails like the pacific crest trail which goes from Mexico to Canada through the Sierras. I used to do long back pack trips and one of my favorite things was going for food after the trip. so when I watch those backpacking days I love seeing the joy they experience when they get to eat a good burger. It brings back good memories. So I love when you share those experiences. Yall have an amazing life. Your hard work shows, your joy in life shows. Its all good. Watching Sierra say good bye was heart wrenching. She is such a sweetie and a cutie. The woo hoo on the bike is still my favorite thing. Thanks for taking us along. I really hope you make it back to the Tuamotos. When the Catamaran is done, is it possible to head in that direction?
I like all the episodes as they are all part of the living aboard lifestyle. Delos was the first sailing channel I ever came across years ago now, and it's this mix of fun, frolics and fearsome problems that add spice to the videos and show what the life is really like. Boat work is maybe my favourite of all, and the way Brian shows that finding and fixing a problem, is just another step forward in a great lifestyle.
I like it so much that most of the repairs & upgrades are DIY, with some help once in a while from an outside shop for stuff like remanufacturing boom parts! Keep on DIY-ing!
this is my favorite channel on youtube. while envious of the life you live, i know it also comes with a lot of struggle. your expertise with the boat is unmatched!

The feeling you cought on video a few times when the sail overpowers the keel and the boat slides sideways is one of the weirdest most unsettling feelings in sailing. Another great video team Delos.

I have watched all of your videos as so many others have, and every time you end a video you show Sierra on her bike running into a bulkhead and then letting out a "WooHoo" cry with raised arms in triumph......... IT MAKE ME LAUGH EVERY SINGLE TIME and is so feel good for the heart it almost makes me cry in happiness. I think it is good to have a mix of videos, including a rough sail with things breaking and/or hazardous situations.... you know, real life stuff. I think you already do a pretty good job of that, so there isn't really much I would change. I love your videos, thanks for inviting us into your home. Safe sailing and be well.

You've probably fixed it already but I think I had the same transmission on my B49. I had the identical behavior and I learned it was an adjustment on the transmission. I wish I could remember the details but it is described in the owners manual for the transmission. I kinda recall it is a hex nut shaped adjustment on the side. Good luck.
Some transmissions have cone clutches and should not be left in gear when sailing . Yanmar has that issue . You wreck the clutch if it slips a little because it is not intended to put power from a spinning prop backwards through it and that is why it can slip and then wear itself out , particularly at the speeds you were at . Yes even folding props can spin a little . The cones can be reburnished which is like lapping a valve and then it is as good as new . Beware if you do that to test it at the dock pretty aggressively because it can grab and not come out of gear at first - ask me how I know LOL .

The Thrust Ring next to the clutch plates is a high probability culprit. Wear could be caused by not having the transmission in reverse while sailing. Wonderful video as always .
Davey Jones is always looking for new souls to drag down into the depths. The ocean isn't something to mess with. You're right about how much in awe it is when you see how violent those waves can be. Glad you made it without problem. Rough seas make the mornings when it's like glass such a treat. Fair winds and following seas Delos.
You listed all the great aspects of your channel. Variety is the spice of life and so it goes with your video's never getting old because every few weeks there is a new task to tackle, or adventure to share.
One of the classic CZcams sailing channels! I had my Amel for 25 years and did a 15-year voyage with a focus of surfing around the world pre CZcams! Many trips to the Tuamotus one from New Zealand, created plenty of footage, but at the time No easy way to show it pre CZcams. Now it's on to bigger boats and a CZcams effort having been inspired by these guysđ
Brian, you are probably among the most experienced sailors. And yet you're on deck doing things without a harness. Have trouble with that as an example. I owe my life to it myself on a Channel crossing from Ramsgate to Nieuwpoort (B)
Been there done that with a nearly new Hurth on my Tayana. The forward clutch plates were worn. Couldn't get spares , so I swapped front and rear plates so that I could at least get forward drive. Eventually got a full set of new plates (both plain and lined ones which are interleaved). Then I found the only way to lock the plates to prevent wear when sailing is to always sail with the transmission in reverse after stopping the engine. Sailed a further 12 years without further transmission problems. Cheers ,Derek (we met briefly in St.Maarten).
I spent 4 years on a Navy vessel. I 100% agree with you when you're out in weather like this and just looking out at the power and the beauty of the ocean.
It really is something else!
I was in a Navy Salvage ARS24 vessel in the Taiwan Strait along with a force 5 typhoon (120-140 mph wind) in about 1966. I stood watch on the bridge but all I could see in any direction was waves only saw the sky by looking almost straight up. Whew didn't think we'd make it but we did, the ship went into Guam for repair that took a month.
That must have have been a WILD experience, so glad you and the crew were able to manage the boat and keep her floating, well done!

Delos. Y'all have shown me things and taught me things that i would never have experienced otherwise. But i have to thank you for letting me see what the ocean is like from such a perspective.
As Brian talked about the beauty of it all, the sequence at 9:20 appeared. That is one of the most beautiful, evocative and perfectly shot scenes I've experienced. It was beautiful and truly terrifying simultaneously!

This video captures the swell and waves so well. I know they are bigger than how they appear on video but in watching you for years the cameras used in this video definitely captured some of the feel and motion of the swell for us couch cruisers.

I have formed a theory of "intelligent machinery" over the years. Every time you think/plan/say you're going to decommission or retire or put in for maintenance or repairs, the piece of machinery (large or small, mechanical or electronic) will immediately start malfunctioning. Things will break. Things will just stubbornly refuse to operate. Electronics will glitch. It is as if the machinery - even if it is your soulful floating home - senses that you are about to set it aside and it throws a tantrum. I have found this theory remarkably consistent. Delos might respond to, you know, a lullaby or some extra cleaning or polishing some brightwork. I have never found this approach to be effective, but it might be worth a try.
Sometimes it feels like everything who can brake conspire to break down in quick succession or at the same time.

Hey guys nice video wow what sea stage you were in I know I would get sick. Just thinking Brian you're making that new boat don't scrimp on cheap buttons switches wire through holes get the best stuff and the most easy stuff to replace if you know like a typical boat eventually stuff will need to be replaced and you want to make it on your new boat so it's just everything is easy maintenance especially the big Mechanicals on the boat haven't thought through first before you build so we have an easy access to all the big things and I'm sure glad that now you can Sierra to help you that's great it's a good learning experience for her the more she learns and gets mechanical it's going to be a good thing as she grows older. I recommend what I had when I was growing up people bought me a mechanical learning sets that have like how to build electronic devices and it was how to solder it was a learning how to solder and it was like a buzzer or something or mechanical Legos things like that are really good for kids cuz the more mechanical you teach a young child I feel the more inclined that kid is to hop in and just do it. Oh yeah I remember you were driving with Sierra and she needs to have some real dive fins and a real mask and snorkel. Love your videos guys stay safe by the way Brian you're transmission it might be okay sometimes Transmissions just get broken in a certain way and the thunk that transmission makes sometimes get smooth in the forward position I mean if it's going into forward even though you don't hear a big thunk it might be okay. And remember that type of transmission if you're in a forward and then you need to go into reverse always I bring the entrance down idle and then take it out of your wait one second and then slowly put it in the reverse. Because it's better for the transmission that you don't just go from forward into reverse that's what causes problems with the transmission

Sailors usually say that the camera doesn't capture the rage of the sea, but I think your camera angles and filming quality gave us the viewers a realistic look at just how wild the ocean was around you. I might add realistic and beautiful.

Brian for the transmission the output shaft is having a teeth missing or getting worn out, this opens when your underway the prop and shaft is spinning when your sailing.
The sailor's challenge: How to keep moving just often enough not to lose your sea legs! I did some pretty rough flying (hot, humid, turbulent) flying in the 1990s. So long as I flew at least twice a week, I was fine. If I lapse for a whole week, however, I'd be a little green.
Nice camera angle on the spinnaker pole!
Tip: Inspect your rudder with a fine-toothed comb. Zatara had issues with a 17 yo rudder.
"...with very little sleep..." I've found that while the need to remain vigilant overnight does indeed leave me rather fatigued the next day, with two people we can switch off, taking catnaps throughout the day so that by mid-afternoon, we are yet again well-rested and ready for another overnighter.

Transmission:
Contact the manufacturer and explain the issue. See what they say. If it's under warranty and you're near a place where you can get it serviced or replaced, I recommend that.
If warranty service/replacement isn't available, try this: One thing I did with an automatic transmission that went a little wonky (hesitancy to enter gear) around 87k miles was to drain and replace the transmission fluid with the manufacturer's recommendation (MERCON V). I'd been doing that every 30,000 miles aka ~ 850 hours (heavy duty maintenance schedule) anyway, and it wasn't due for another 3k miles, and largely preventative in nature, but hey - what the heck. When that failed to fix the issue, I drained and replaced it with an alternative but top of the line fluid (Castrol Transmax ATF/CVT Universal - Full Synthetic Formula). That did the trick! If it hadn't, I'd likely have rented a car for a month and reserviced my own transmission (tedious, but doable), paying particular attention to clutches (yes, automatic transmissions have clutches!), sensors, worn/broken torque converter, faulty shift solenoid, and worn/broken transmission bands.
If replacing the transmission fluid with a high quality alternative like Castrol or Mobile 1 doesn't work, remember this about Rough Shifting: "Rough shifting is another problem that has a litany of underlying potential causes. There could be jammed gears, worn bands, or about a dozen other problems. The only way to find out for sure is to tear apart your transmission and rebuild it."
Summary: Seek warranty help. If not available, replace the fluid and filter(s) with manufacturer recommended fluid. If that doesn't work, replace the fluid against, this time with a high-quality alternative. If that still doesn't work, it's time to open the case and see what's wrong.
Shifting into gear is actually a significant strain on a transmission. Therefore, unless it's an emergency, start the engine, let it warm up for a minute, then move the throttle to the slowest idle possible. Shift from neutral to forward or reverse. Double the RPM puts 4x more strain on the transmission! I suggest keeping it at idle while in gear for a minute or two just to thoroughly move the transmission fluid around before applying a load.
It's not that boat transmissions are all that different from automotive transmissions. They're not. It's just that they're not very tolerant of shifting under load. Remember: idle first, give it a second or two for things to spool down, then shift.
Questions: How is it cooled? Do you have a transmission temperature indicator? Has the temperature remained well within specs?
Sierra is quickly becoming the star of the show! Who would of thunk all those years ago?

I used to sail on a 42 catalina 13 tonne, it used to love 20 knots, 10 was not really enough. Seems very similar to delos. 30 double reef in main, number 3 on and off ya go. I've done a couple of 45 knot passages, while it never felt unsafe you do realise things are pushed to their max, having to winch in 2m of headsail onto the furler comes with respect for the power of the wind. Some thing previously pulled by hand is now requiring winching. Great vid guys
