Yup. Had the pleasure to talk to Charlie Haden a few times over the phones thanks to my uncle who knew him. Charlie taught at Cal Arts and was going to help me with school. Now, I did ask him about working with Beck. What was it like. He said as I told Beck, "lay off the drugs man because you are a musical genius!" and it was a "fluke" the he recorded on this track. Charlie was recording in the same building and renting a studio and Beck was done the hall. Well Beck saw his name " reserved for Charlie Haden" on the door and was a huge fan and introduced himself. Charlie did know him from the song loser though. Beck's drummer and bass player were MIA and Beck asked him to record a few tracks but Charlie said no a few times until he agreed to listen to his stuff what was to become the Odelay album. There were over 50 tracks he said recorded...and he was blowing him off and Charlie eventually agreed and charged him $200 an hour lol and the song was recorded in 2 takes...Charlie quickly learned the chords and thought Beck was crazy because the drummer finally showed up but the drum set was broken and so he used just a cymbal and 2x4 wood board he found in the parking lot to record it...Beck said..hey this makes a cool pop song/sound...Charlie got paid and wished Beck good luck but told him to lay off the drugs lol. He said was completely high out of his mind and was coked up or something...that's the back story to this song. Charlie was surprised that Odelay blew up...but he did like some of the songs....

This usually wouldn't be considered a chord "progression", since the only chord is E, but it has a nice tension-release effect since you're playing two dissonant notes against the tonic and then resolving. The minor 9th especially sticks out; it's a really ugly sounding interval and it's a relief when it settles back into an octave.

Indeed to all of them. I miss the old Beck. His stuff is just dreck now IMHO. I had all his CDs but lost them sadly/ happily to my eldest son who was just a kid then... he took them to school just like I used to take records to school. I couldn't be too pissed. 😉
I used to put this song when I was going to sleep on many a very high or buzzed nights/mornings in my college dorm room in the late 90’s. Depends on my state, I would sleep through the hidden track of noise or wake up in a panic. It was a gamble.
God who are we in the end? Is it us who dictates who we are or those weve been around? I suppose in some way you know more than they do but they also know more than you so in the end youd just be in a pissing contest over identity vs self identity. Nothing can cleanse the soul more than just going afar from anything that keeps them happy or themself we are still connected to it but we no longer desire it purely we seek those within ourself. We can grow old and see our own path weve reached and god forgive everyone and their own path.

I had this CD and something was wrong with it and every song played in slow motion.
Makes you wonder if it was a purposeful mistake, Beck's Golden Ticket, as to speak.
