One other difference that seems significant to me: Chris works alone most of the time, at least that we see. It is rare when his uncle runs the haul truck or someone else helps. So Chris is often working alone and trying to maximize what one man can do, versus having a crew doing multiple things. The ground differences also enable this. One man can do what Chris does because the task is different. Both groups do top notch work.

Not that you can't have alliances and fun with friends, but competition is what generates highest quality at the lowest cost in a free market society. It's part of what made America the richest most powerful nation in the world.
Cooperation is what they do in communist socities where they generate the lowest quality at the highest cost. It's what thedemocrats are doing now to destroy the country. "You don't have to try, you don't even have to work... we'll take care of you,.. and everyone is poorer and defemdent on the next handout.
Competition is good even among friends.

As a Disaster Inspector, for that four letter group, and having to know the different soil and sub straight types, I think you have to be adaptable to the dirt you are moving. I know there is a huge difference in the soils between even the local states like NC, SC, TN, FL, TX, LA... etc. You have soft soils, sandy soils, hard clay, soft clay... wet, dry, and so on. A good dirt mover knows the soil in his back yard, so to speak. That is where you find the best way for what you're working with to get the job done right. Like in the border area between NC and SC, there might not be a good clay base where you want the pond, so you have to dig a borrow pit to get the clay you need or have a drainage issue from all the soft sandy dirt that is present. Where in other places, you have a very dense clay that you need the big machine to dig through it. In some places they have to set charges to break the clay enough to even do that. There are other places where the dirt is so soft and sloppy, all a big machine would do is get stuck, even with mats. There is not right way that fits all. There are different ways to do it right where you are doing it.

love and fully enjoy the cossover videos with you and Chris, and the different methods you each have and use for building pond dams. The other difference is that most of the time, at least on video, Chris is working alone, once in a while he will have someone helping him, but most the time he is a one man show, where you Mike, have Jerry and Aaron, on most of your pond dam builds. No matter the jobs, your both #1 to me in your fields and take great pride and show a lot of professionalism in what you do as well. Would LOVE to see you in Upstate New York, once and working with Maybe Andrew Camarata, whom is also pretty much a one man show, though on his road builds on his new property he has finally gotten some help. Like you Mike, 99% of the time, Andrew repairs his own machinery, and make it all work. what he knows for such a young man is amazing to me. Matt [ Diseil Creek ] is another all one man show, and also fixes his own machines most of the time by himself. again for what he knows about machines is impressive for a man his age..

I saw a John Deere 120D excavator sitting at a 60'x60' lot getting ready to dig, I can see now why you like that model so much, it is a full size excavator with a small foot print, I doubt that Chris' 220E could do the same, he would probably use a mini. this was in town with a busy state highway at one end of the block and a busy avenue at the other and this street is used as a connector to the highway(short cut). I was impressed, thumbs up my friend, you are correct.

Nice, loved it💝💝 I have noticed, that it all depends on the area you live, on how the processes differ.. I live in far west central Indiana (on the border Indiana & Illinois) and we do jobs slightly different from you, I lived in Colorado & Georgia and they are also vastly different, but yet a lot of it is similar.. Codes also dictate on how some things are done also.. I enjoy watching channels like yours and LD18 cause it is more real people and shows people who care.. I have done about 40+ years of construction and the larger the company the less real it is (well to me anyway) Smaller companies is where the heart of the trades are, where you see the care and the love of the work shines, even in small jobs.. I have watched both of you go the extra mile more times then not, just because you wanted the job to be perfect... It would be nice to see you both collaborate and work together on a job from design to completion.. 10/10 😎😎

"Going deeper" when talking about ponds... :-)
When I saw Chris' video on this job, it was the first time you came into view with me, and it took some time to realize how you relate (some auction video of his, I think). (And eventually, I have subscribed to more vloggers associated with you.)
I admire your eagerness, Mike, to learn from others. I greatly appreciate your considerations by the end of this video. Yes, I think that you nailed different approaches due to the steepness of the slopes, so that you need to build tall dams in IN to create even small ponds, as opposed to low dams in NC to suffice for wide ponds. (Which then translates in different levels of sideways pressure to the dam.) Matt's pond might have succeeded in NC, with other soil and a lower dam.
But then, as a Dutch (blokes') saying translates: if my aunt had had a [beep], she would have been my uncle. ;-)

Having watched both you and Chris’s channels for quite a while, I’m not sure I completely buy into his argument using the haul truck where you would use the dozer. I’ve seen numerous videos of his where the haul truck is buried up to the axles and he has to track across the jobsite to wrestle it out with the excavator…..sometimes mumtiple times per video. Granted, it could be because he’s transporting the loads offsite from the project area. That said, I’ e also seen him do projects that bave a lot of big rock in them and the excavator/haul truck combo was the only to make it happen productively. I’d say its probably the right choice for him most of the time, whereas it wouldn’t be for you. The type projects and the location probably influence that the most. Your recent pond project proved you could really move dirt efficiently with 2 dump trucks operating. It looked like you could pretty much dig continuously to keep them going, instead of waiting for truck to return.

    • @shawbg
      @shawbg Před 2 lety

Dirt is expensive to move. Equipment, fuel, maintenance, transport and operators normally make good money. So the name of the game is move dirt as efficiently as possible. Big dozer = 1 operator vs hoe and truck = 2 operators. Now if the haul is longer yeah a truck or 627 scraper is needed. I watch Chris’s channel also he is a awesome operator! But he is a hoe guy and a good one and it makes for nice video but he prefers to pick the dirt up vs shoving it. I’m kinda curious ,is a dozer more fun to watch or a hoe digging and swinging around? I would rather watch a dozer make dirt perfect!

It's not my place, and I certainly don't have an education to back any of my thoughts up (since that's of utmost importance to those who mainly/only know of formal education), but what you two show is an extremely great example of mutual respect that is honest, true, and mature.

Awesome video there and so glad to see how you found your time there with Chris and the different techniques at play. Are you planning on returning the favour in the near future and have Chris come up and work with you on some of your projects ?

Was cool seeing you two work together Mike ! Found myself chuckling away. Lol. And very good pints on the differences. In Maine we generally use a spillway method lined with rubber roofing and rip rap due to the fact the frost line here is 4’ and when the frost comes out it’ll generally lift the pipe causing a leak. Ask me how I know. Lmao. Different climates and soils certainly play into what works best. Take care Mike

My neighbor back home built thousands of ponds. He never had an excavator so he used 2 dozers (a D6 and D7). They would push together with their blades almost touching. He said that 2 dozers could push the dirt of 3 dozers that way.

I hope to see you two collaborate more often in the future. And hopefully next time Chris lend you a hand. The dream would be a large project together with Chris, MBTS, Captain and the others.
Could be the best comedy on CZcams haha!
    Keep it up and coming!

Just found you from Chris's channel. I know on his big pond projects, like 2 acres plus, I can definitely see how a big dozer would be better utilized. They battle with the haul truck a lot. Even shut jobs down because of it. I'm going to go watch your pond project next. Before I watch his video on it. Your channel is awesome!

It’s exactly like Chris had said in one of his videos you were in. Guys like the two of you never get to work together often because with your knowledge and availability your working for yourself with your own crews. I remember when I came home from the Marine Corps, I had made myself a promise I would never work for anyone but myself and my family. Was lucky to have it all turn out. Great content seeing how you guys get it done 👍

I enjoyed watching this on Chris's channel, you two work very well together. I had 3 very different types of businesses and one being a builder we did not do very much ground work, just had a excavator and a skid-steer, so when I watch all you guys I'm always watching how real excavators do things. I've learned things watching many of you guys on CZcams but I'm retired now so can't try any of them to see how they would have worked for me since I no longer have my equipment. My wife CANNOT understand why I enjoy watching these kind of videos and just assumed I miss it, and she is correct on that I guess.
How did the big meet and greet go, no one has posted any videos so far that I have seen.

Good to see you two working together, i asked you on his channel what the difference was in the soul types. I see why you didnt answer me there, it was a lot more to it than a simple answer lol. You are right, everybody does things different and usually with different tools. Im a mechanic and have learned many shortcuts and how to do things different over the years with certain tools, none were the wrong way but each way had their own advantage

It was really interesting hearing your Comments on this job basically being the same as Chris,s. It has been interesting and very enjoyable to see two experienced self employed operators getting together on the one project and working so well together.. It will be fun seeing Chris get together with you again on your home ground. Thank you to both of you for all the content you put out there for us to watch.
