  • Join me for a walk around the delightful village of Oakworth, the home of the Railway Children and so much more! Located on one side of the picturesque Worth Valley across from Haworth and about 10 miles northwest of Bradford, Oakworth is an absolute joy to visit, with lots of local heritage to discover!
    On our walk around Oakworth, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including The Snooty Fox, Christ Church (Oakworth Parish Church), Oakworth Manor, Oakworth Local Board Offices, Oakworth Hall, Oakworth Social Club, Oakworth Village Hall, Holden Park, the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and Oakworth Station.
    Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of Oakworth:

    Good evening! Thank you so much to everybody for over 3,800 subscribers, we're nearing an amazing milestone, and I'm so happy to see your support on all the videos :)
    This evening, we take a walk around Oakworth, the village where the 1970 version of The Railway Children was filmed. Instead of some bonus info about the filming of the movie here, I'm attaching a link to a brilliant documentary by StudioCanal UK talking to residents of Oakworth and around the Worth Valley and their memories of when The Railway Children came to town! Give it a watch, it's a delight: czcams.com/video/Z3T2SJLpWoY/video.html

    The Railway Children, what a film. Brings back memories of sitting crossed legged on the school room floor for the last 30 minutes of the school day listening to Mrs. Robinson reading to us. Boy, did she ever have great story telling skills. Her husband owned a small sweet factory and he'd give her a large jar of mixed sweets to bring into school. She'd allow us kids to select one sweet each and once she began reading the only sound you'd hear is the occasional clack of a bullseye or pear drop against teeth or a slight slurp on a small gobstopper. This is one of the reasons I so enjoy your walks, they usually evoke a memory or two, especially if the location has an association to something we're all familiar with. The Railway Children and The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett are my two favourite storybooks from my childhood. Thanks as always.

      How delightful! That kind of story almost perfectly encapsulates a quaint English childhood - and I love to hear these wonderful memories from you, it really makes me happy to hear that the videos bring back these memories from time to time :) The Railway Children is an absolutely gorgeous film that I think most of us will never forget - though I must confess I've never read the book myself!
      Thank you so much for watching and your wonderful comments as always - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

    A very pleasant walk but you missed out some of the oldest buildings in Oakworth along Clough Lane.
    These parts of Oakworth are older than Haworth.

    Had register in the Domesday book. Normans made England.

      @LetsWalkUK  Před 3 lety

      Very much so! Without the Domesday Book a lot of my research would be made a lot more difficult, plus it's always interesting to see how places have grown so dramatically in the last 1,000 years, when most settlements were home to just a handful of people :)
