  • Join me for a detailed dive into 2-colour stranded knitting, CONTINENTAL STYLE! (that is, holding BOTH yarns in the left hand)
I'm working on my Alexandria Cowl, by Shinysuperhero, and mastering the art of two coloured stranded knitting in the continental style. The aim is to retain speed and quality without driving myself bananas with a monster yarn spagetti.
I break down the technique that I learned, discussing some of the issues with 2 stranded colourwork as well as the experience I went through, with lots of neat little handy tips and guidance. Develop your technique with me as we practice ONE colour continental, then building up to TWO colour continental.
SPOILERS! If you want to skip ahead to the two colour business, its at the 9 MIN mark.
I'm doing these videos just for fun, and am not compensated or sponsored by any brands, shops or designers. All opinions are my own.
I hope you enjoy this video! Please let me know if you have questions or comments.

This is exactly how I figured out for myself because I also didn't like using two different hands. This way is how I taught myself knitting one stranded in the beginning, so I didn't wanna change technique for 2 strands. Really good tutorial and instructions, made things much more clearer and easier now for me. I wasn't quite sure if how I did it was quite right and felt a bit wonky because everyone's doing it different and I just held the yarn like normal and struggled to always grab the right one from the right direction. Appreciate your video!

So show how to lock with the kind of continental knitting your doing,? As I do it the exact same way but locking a st is a wee bit difficult. Btw your instruction is wonderful ty.

Simply awesome!! Best tutorial I’ve seen, in countless hours of trawling this net AND a lot of knitting I’m not super happy with. So nice to hear an accent I’m fluent in too!🇦🇺

Absolutely, love your instructions for color work. Love knitting color work and lacey sweaters. Selbu Mittens are my favorite projects so far. Love the earthy tones your using. It's like working with an artist's pallet of paint. No boundaries! 💜

This helped me understand the top & bottom colors, and suddenly stranded knitting is clicking for me!
I find it easier to tension my foreground color on my pinky & my background color on my ring finger. When I do both yarns around my pinky, they twist up and get frustrating for me.
    Thanks!

That looks so neat and well explained. I’ve just finished knitting my first stranded colorwork using both hands (continental for main color and English for contrasting color)
Turned out ok but I’ll definitely give your method a try on my next project. Thank you for sharing😊👍🏻

thanks so much! I sometimes still hold my colours in separate hands, depends on how I'm feeling, but since Im more used to holding them in the same hand, I find its a bit faster and more consistent. Its such a personal preference too!! happy knitting!

What is that lovely stitch pattern? So pretty. And I like your color selection too. I will have to try your method - but while I do hold the yarn in my left hand, it is not continental. I do eastern uncrossed which always wraps the yarn the other way - back leg forward instead of front leg forward as for continental and English. So the strands may not separate quite so cleanly for me. Thank you for demonstrating this. It makes a lot of sense while not getting too bogged in detail.

Thanks so much! The pattern is the “Alexandria Cowl” by Shinysuperhero. She writes beautiful colour work and instaria patterns. She’s on Ravelry and Insta. I taught myself continental to learn to knit faster, I sometimes flip back and forth now. It’s always great to have a variety of techniques to use!!

This is my favorite video for continental colorwork. I still have such a hard time with my tension. My dominant color tension becomes loose on my finger while the background color remains taut. I'm not sure how to keep them both alright.

It's pretty straightforward actually.. but hard to explain without visuals. I'm working on some colour work knitting right now so I'll do a video and demo once I get up to a good part of the colour work section. It might take a few weeks to record, edit and publish though! Watch this space 💜💜
