The story of this insane project:
For 4 years I have been working on and off, on a perfect cover version of Equinoxe 4.
Recreating all sounds and effect one to one. It was 98% finished but every time I got to the crazy EMS VCS 3 effects before the chorus, I realized I couldn't recreate them. I have a bad tinnitus and listening to these high pitch sounds left my ears bleeding (so it felt) so I stopped.
I started up again dozens of times with new ideas, only to realize again I couldn't.
Then two month ago, I was jamming in Reason Studio and tried an upbeat version of the song, I tried new modern sounds and drums, I tried 20 sounds for the sequencer but it didn't felt right.
Then I opened my unfinished Equinoxe 4 project and copied the "original" ARP2600 sequence I made into the dance version and changed the speed from 113.69 to 118 BMP - now THAT was cool!
Then I copied another sound, another effect and so on and ended up with 80% of the original cover in a new version :D
.....and then guess what, I got to the crazy effects and tried for two days again until my ears fell off!
But ended up doing my own version of the effects, but with some of the original timing.
Everything is made in ReasonStudios with the build in synths and some Arturia instruments.
- Sequencer is two ARP 2600, in left and right channel not always in sync, so I listened in slow motion for every pattern in each channel and changed it. They have strange cuts here and there but they are recreated too.
- All strings are Eminent 310U some with SmallStone phaser on.
- Bass is also ARP 2600 but with a deeper layered sound for more punch.
- The Organ sound in the middel is Eminent 310U and I layered it with my own SmallStone strings because I think it sounded good :)
- The strange robot sounds in the middel part is also made in ARP2600, I found out how it was done, but it's random sample and hold so I generated each section 10 times and used the one closest to the original.
- Most of the effect are made in Thor, a simple but powerful synth in Reason, some with SmallStone and flanger effect and the classic 347ms Left/Right delay.
- One effect is made in an RMI Harmonic Synthesizer clone
- The Opera voice in the end is also made in Thor. Fun fact: when it pitches up it goes slightly over one octave, I guess the old EMS Synthi was not so accurate - but I recreated that too of course :D
- Mellotron is used for the choir in the ending.
- Bass drum, HiHat's and tambourine are new sounds, Snare Drum and a strange bongo in the chorus are samples from EKO ComputeRhythm, I'm 100% sure now this was used!
- The new lead and chorus sounds I made with two Arturia Prophet 5's
The video, OMG! Maybe 8k 60 fps was a bit overkill, but in 15 years no one will laugh at the low resolution (...so we think today).
Years ago I made the Equinoxe Watcher in super high resolution in PhotoShop, then I tried putting them together like the original Michael Granger cover and it worked well.
The video is made with 10 PNG rows 8k wide so I could change them individually in Premiere Pro.
I have a really powerful computer and graphics card, but Premiere don't want to use it, so rendering took forever with CPU running at 15% and video card doing nothing. So I made it in blocks rendered at 8k60 ProRes (they are BIG).
The first block in the intro where the watchers are wiggling took 20 hours to render! So I dropped the wiggling on the other parts. The jumping was really hard for me to do but I think it went ok.
I made the "eyes" green so I could put different color underlayer effects on them via green screen, it worked perfect!
The keyboards are big PNG's from Arturia's great instruments and then I screen captured the keys playing, masking and layered them on top of the PNG.
The 3D text I made in Blender - I didn't know anything regarding 3D so I had to study that too, it went ok. It's just a single frame I slide and zoom in, because it took 1 hour to render in 8k! So a 2 second animation would take 5 days in 60 fps! :D
Well maybe nobody cares, but that's my story from this extremely time consuming project - I will never do it again! ..until next time :)
I know I spam a lot for viewing my other videos, I really need your support to have this channel running.

Klang aber auch ziemlich gut❤
Is this not finished yet
@@mickandrews6989No and will never be, because I can't replicate some of the parts :)
Back in 1982 When I was around 7,my dad had to go to Dallas for a computer company training course and this album was part of the soundtrack to the slideshow (or movie he watched there I can't remember) and he bought this album when he got back as he had really thought it was amazing. He went out to the local big name store where we lived in Langley BC and came home with a top of the line Sanyo home stereo system. We both would sit listening to this masterpiece that dad was able to find locally and he would blast it as loud as he could before the needle would resonate the sound through the bass. We shared some cool times to this record and Oxygene too.
I think I was driving my mom bananas when I would just sit and listen to them both but Equinoxe was and is my favorite.
I found out one day that if you relaxed your eyes and stared at the third row of watchers, dead centre of the record album that they would stand up and it was all 3-D. I told mom and she couldn't see it,dad couldn't either.
We moved a few years later and the record was lost somehow during it. But I never forgot the album name.
Disques Dreyfus with the lady relaxing on the back logo stuck out for some wierd reason too.
Fast forward a decade or 3,I finally found a copy at my local record store and I didn't care about the $75 dollar copy price due to import charges 'cause I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO HAVE IT.
I've since had the same record player dad owned rebuilt in the last 5 years and introduced this album to my kids. They get a kick out of it and when I showed them how to get the watchers to stand up they really get into the whole album in a new way.
We have a collection of Daft Punk and Justice now ,but this comes out fairly often too.
And of course, just like dad showed me how to work the stylus lock on his Sanyo player I show my kids how to use it,set the tone arm down really slow then turn on the Amp and Subwoofer and then we wind out the volume as far as I can before distortion kicks in,just like 40 years earlier when dad and I would sit and smile to the flights of imagination, trapped inside small grooves on a flat piece of back vinyl made from a musical genius craftsman who introduced me to techno.
This remix is going to come home with me today and I'm going to play this EPIC and ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE remaster, that this artist who posted his work should be EXTREMELY proud of. You did a fantastic job sir! Fan-freaking-tastic indeed.
I'm gonna get my dad to slap on some headphones and have him listen too. I know he'll appreciate the memories.
Wow cool story man!
And thank you very much for your kind words :)
Regarding the 3D effect on the cover, I think it's a coincident, I don't think Michael Granger made a stereoscopic easter egg in 1978 :)
Nice! I can relate as it was my dad that introduced me to the electronic music of Jarré and Vangelis, he loved them and i soon did too. He made me listen to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, other styles like Bossa Nova and some more songs that i really enjoy 40 years later.
I am 57 years old and have listened to Jarre's iconic music since the late 70ies. I love his music until "The Concerts in China". I saw his full analogue Oxygene-Tour with all the original instruments here in Germany. This was so impressive. Therefore, everytime he puts out something new I try to give him a new chance. Sometimes there are one or too new tracks I like, but most of the time I am disappointed by his new and more recent work. It lacks the emotion of his first albums.
Now I have just listened to your Equinoxe 4 version. OMG, if only Jarre would use remixes like yours for his live projects. Yours is fantastic and keeps up the mood of the original.
Thank you for all the hard work you have put into this.
Thank you so much for this comment! It really means a lot to me!
Actually I prefer the Concerts in China version of this track to LP one
Nickolas, I so agree with you! I am very jealous of you seeing the analogue Oxygene tour; I recently discovered the video of the Oxygene studio performance with your tour's musicians and it was brilliant. I did see him live in NYC in 2017, but the Oxygene tour must have been great.
I reluctantly concur with you on this. I've been a fan of JMJ since I discovered an old cassette with Rendezvous on it as a teenager in the 90's. I've seen him Live and the show is spectacular. However I recently watched the VR Versailles Concert, and I find nothing there. Good classic tracks, but nothing that warrants anything revolutionary. Could easily have just been another one of his excellent shows without the VR/AR concept. Whilst his earlier work is packed with emotion, innovation and brilliant concepts, much of his latest work seems only to be around to achieve sales.
@@TheAntshme too
Loved this. I have listened to Jarre since he appeared with this track in the UK in 1976 with the Oxygene album, I started my electronic journey with the likes of Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Kraftwerk, and a few others in the early 1970's. I was saddened in April 1986 when the space shuttle exploded taking away Ron McNair who was to play live from space as that would have been a masterpiece. I thing Jean Michel would enjoy this remix as he is a visionary with his music too. By the way I am almost 65 and still love Jarre, Kraftwerk et al.
A little correction, the Oxygene album wasn't released in the UK until 1977, and this track is from the Equinoxe album that was released in 1978.
@@minisynthmaniac Thank you. I had it in my head the track was Oxygene for some reason and as I am 64 I will plead memory loss as to the date of the album lol.
Totally agree 👍❤️🇬🇧
Thank you so much for you words. :)
I don't know if JMJ likes it or not, I can't reach out to him, I've tried.
64, French, and sometime, a JMJ, Kraftwerk, Vangelis, ..., album from the 70´s is refreshing 😊
This is fantastic! I‘m 59 year old, I knew J.M.Jarre from his very first album and I saw him live. And this version is great! Thank you!
wow, thank you so much :)
Ageless music !!!
I'm a very big Jean-Michel Jarre fan,and Equinoxe part 4 is my all time favourit from Jarre, and this is really the best ever remix i heared,it makes my day, great job,the balance between the original sounds and new sounds is so perfect !!!
Thank you so much!
It was exactly my idea, to make a good balance between new and old with huge respect for the original.
Die Formel dank dem Meister
Your opinion is absolutely true
I admire that you kept the original formula. Very nice track!
Excellent ! Brilliant !….
I wonder if I don’t prefer this track instead of the original one….
J'aime beaucoup cette réinterprétation et aussi l'animation avec les même dessins animée de l'album original , Bravo
Merci! :)
It's stuff like this that makes me happy! Not just a perfect recreation but also adding a modern touch. Super well done! And your story actually added a lot too.
Thank you! Glad you read my story.
Love the bobbing watchers!
Thanks :)
The sneaky watcher is hilarious! 😅
Haha thanks :)
To fiddle with a masterpiece is a scary difficult task. You came out to standing ovations here! Congrats!
Thanks man, I'm so happy all you guys like it and found the balance of old vs new right :)
Equinoxe was one of the very first cassettetapes, I bought as a child in Skive, Denmark, in the eighties. It was like "spacemusic". Very nice and playful reinterpretation ...
Pumpende Bass 🎵 Power 🦾🦾 die angenehm einen durchflutet 🌊 und Behaglichkeit 😌 aussendet , diese wiederum macht einen ruhig 😴 und selig 🤌 im Gemüt 🎪

you are crazy man...
aber das weiss du schon... 😉🙃
einfach genial was du gemacht... 😎
I know!
I went and watched Jarre at the London Docklands with my parents. It was absolutely raining big time, but Jarre carried on with the show. Experience I will never forget.
I was at that concert as well, was unbelievable despite the rains best efforts to ruin the show 👍🏻
Cool! :)
"But you know - frogs like rain! Nothing will stop us now!"
You went on Sunday then. I went Saturday. Bloody cold, but at least dry. Loved the searchlights.
@7anthillmob yeah me and parents walked from Dagenham to the docklands just to watch it my dad is a huge fan.. We got a night bus back I think I remember coming back home on a bus and missing school the next day. My mum got up late monday morning.
I'm a huge fan of JMJ and every time I can hear his sounds I'm in heaven. Especially when remade so beautifully... It's simply great!
Thank you so much!
Brilliant! As DJ and fan of Jarre I can use this😊!
Thanks man. Well it's hard to prevent you from doing so in a club or other places you DJ :)
EQUINOXE 4.MY FAVORIT MUSIC.👍❤🎹
Mine too :)
Age 54 I also now him since ever and love the symbiosis with dance
Great to hear :)
And I love the way the Watcher's groove to the
beat. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
Saw him live in Houston, Rendezvous Houston, all the highways ground to a stop to watch and listen to him. Then saw him when he performed in London.
You lucky man!! :)
It brings memories from the very first time listening to this wonderful album.
Yes it has a speciel place in our brains :)
Got the original album, seems so long ago now. Excellent modern version of a classic.
Thank you Sir! :)

Nice approach of respecting the original while giving it a fresh sound

Best Equinoxe remix I' ve ever experienced. Adds so much to the original without subtracting anything at all. Congratulations my friend and thank you so much!
Thanks you so much!
Thanks for sharing your version of Equinoxe IV! Like it!! Greetings from Leeuwarden - the Netherlands 🎹🎶🎶
Thank you! Share it so the world knows :)
This song is my favorite from Equinoxe i like the new style you did
This or Equinoxe 7 i'm always in doubt. Thank you
The more I listen to it, the more I like it more than the original. The original version may have more subtetlies, but the timbre and the "expansiveness" of this version is flying colors to me !
Thanks again !
by "subtleties" I mean a more "analogic feel"...
Excellent tribute to that wonderful album of JM Jarre.
Thanks! :)

Wouldn’t mind seeing Jarres own comment. Excellent job of modernizing a brilliant track!
I've given up on that, he doesn't seems to be interested. But thanks a lot :)
I listened to this at full volume, and the Watchers were fun too, at just 7 mins though l would have liked more 👍
GREAT!!! :)
Ai ai ai Thomas man this is amazing. Look at them dancing!!!
Haha, thanks :)
😍 this is... breathtaking. So much attention in every sound, you absolutely nailed the JMJ style. Love how the modern elements are fit with the original score too. Bravo! 👏👏👏
Hi, a lot of people attempt to cover this track, but you have NAILED it big time. The video As well really suits the track. Keep doing what you're doing it works!!!!!!! Love it

ESTO SE LLAMA MEJORAR LO INMEJORABLE. GRACIAS.
I was within a cats whisker of seeing JMJ at the Docklands concert, part of me wished I had, but pneumonia is glad I didn't.
JMJ is amazing, especially this era.
This remake is honestly a real homage to the master. A compliment to JMJ style and sound.
I saw him at Docklands, drove from North Wales to London, no tickets, just had to go there but actually got into the concert and saw him, then whilst in France 1987 in Paris for the storming of the bastille celebration we were there with 2 million others to witness a fantastic celebration!
Thank you so much :)
I wish I saw the old concerts live.
Very Very COOOOL
The Soul of Jean is in this
I love it

Love it. Just been dropping shapes in the kitchen.😎

I’ve been a Jarrehead since the 70s and generally steer clear of cover versions as they’re invariably poor approximations of the originals. But this, this is awesome. Well done, and keep up the good work!
Thanks! Yes there are so many bad ones, and if people really can't hear how to play it, then don't! :)
I would walk down the corridor at work with jarres music blaring out, bought sone quality to the place , better then the rubbish they were liistining to, and people would ask whose that . Class never dies.
Exactly!

This is what I CALL music!!
Thank you! :)
Great original score of cause but I think I found the right balance between old and new in this remake.
I love this version, even down to the little guys who pop up from behind the keyboard, so funny. 🤪 What are those little guys any way, never have been able to find out if Mr Jarré ever gave them a name?! Certainly nothing like Minions, thankfully! 👽👀🥸💯👍
Thank you so much!
They are called "Watchers" in the Jarre fan world, I don't know if Jean Michel ever called them that :)
@@thhedk Thank you “Watchers”, as soon as you said it I remembered reading about them but yeah I'm unsure whether Mr Jarré actually called them that, maybe it was the artist Granger who called them that?! 🤔
Emocionate !! Music

Wild. The colours. The keyboard work. And the graphics all truly impressive. Well done!
Thanks again, thank you so much!
I didn't make a stereoscopic effect on purpose either :D
A very respectable remix of a great track.
