- Gauhar Jaan never hesitated in trying something new with her craft of singing. That is what prompted her to record her music, which was an important development because it democratised music and now it became available to the common man, breaking the class boundaries. She compressed khayal singing into three minutes. Her contribution to Hindustani classical music is remarkable. The legendary dancer and singer recorded more than 600 records between 1902 and 1920, across diverse languages, including Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Arabic, Persian, Pushto, French, and English. A ‘tawaif’ of repute, she had her own stature and grace. During the 1920s, when the Indian elite, armed with western education, campaigned against Tawaifs and the Viceroy was approached for banning the profession, Gauhar commented that the Viceroy should mind his own business since his monthly salary was equal to what she received for one ‘mujra’!

My grandma as a very young girl had a glimpse of Gauharjaan in Murshidabad A local Raja or Zamindar (I don't remember who)had invited her to his Raajbaari to perform The whole town was on fire hearing of her arrival The women could only listen to her beautiful voice from behind the purdah This must have had a huge impact on my grandma because she would often narrate this story to us Sadly didn't realise it then only much later realised it's historical importance

The first ever recording by an Indian on gramophone record was a Bengali song, "kanha jeeban dhan" from Sri Krishna by Miss. Soshi Mukhi (Matrix No. E.103 dated 8th November 1902.)
As far as it is known the only surviving copy of this record is in "Discs & Machines" Gramophone Museum and Records Archive, Kerala, India.
The first song recorded by Miss. Gauharjan was "mainwari bichuya baje - Kaal - Mohomedan song (Matrix No. E.119 dated 11th November 1902.)
Singers who recorded their songs on 8th and 9th November 1902 are 1. Miss. Soshi Mukhi, 2-.Miss. Fanni Bala, 3-.Miss. Hari Dassi, 4- Miss.Sushila, 5 - Miss. Saila Bai, 6 - Babu N.C.Chakraborthy.
So, Miss. Gauharjan is the 7th artist to record for gramophone record.
None of the songs by these six artists were reissued. So, very few records have survived.

I have penned And Published a book, "The Unsung Martyred Tawayafs." I Have Not Mentioned Even Once That Gauhar Was An Armenian. It Is Hard Truth That Her Mother Was A British. The Book Has Narrations Of All Those Twayafs Who Contributed A Lot To Freedom Struggle.
My father was a regular goer of Mujra dance and classical music after closing the shop he use visit top class Khotas everyday, he always talk about this ladies respectful because they were artistic not prostituts, and there behavior was regal not cheap, pls extend the time of ur story telling its very engaging. When I listened to this youtube clip, I appreciate truly the courage Gauhar had in coming up with such melodious songs in the way the songs used to be then. I only regret for myself that I was not familiar with any of her songs then, or even now. Much later on in the 30s, some songs that came up that I became familiar with. Of course, I was not even born then, or till another forty years when I became to know much of any music at all. It is a true pleasure to see someone like you dug up such treasures in the Indian music. Bravo!!
This should be included in the normal curriculum in high schools...from Fiji.
A Life of Gouhar jaan is an unique.She helped indian Freedom fighters.
A full fledged museum of Indian music must be organised and in that a gallery be named after her.
