  • A couple of case studies diagnosed more "practically" focusing on efficiency with some sacrifice of accuracy. This represents how I actually do diagnostics "in real life" when not filming to show how to be 100% certain in a diagnostic- you cant always realistically do that.

    That is exactly what i did on a Honda Ridgeline last week, he had already replaced all of his coils and plugs in an attempt to fix it, it has a dead misfire in the back middle cyl #2, zero compression. He has burnt exhaust valves indicated by my cyl leakdown test. Probably never had a valve adjustment. He didn't want to fix it, so I disconnected his #2 injector connector. 210k miles and it is a rusted out vehicle with shotty collision repair efforts. He just recently purchased this car. I stressed the importance of pre purchase inspections.

    Suddenly the box that the cat was in started to move.... oh wait, I forgot to connect the battery cable, and then just as suddenly the universe returned to normal.
    2nd car with a cheap endoscope camera you could see if valves are doing their thing or a burnt valve. Or at TDC compression put some air in it to see where the leak is, or is not.
    A collapsed lifter could be as simple as turn down the rocker screw and keep going.
    Nothing against what you did though considering the circumstances.
    I won't say what you can do with a pressure transducer because you don't have one and I've never done it, but there are some amazing CZcams videos, Bernie Thompson is the best so far.

    You would think that 12.6 volts is not a lot of voltage, but it's the amperage required to turn over the engine that has to be examined. Consider the age of the battery & load test the battery. I have had batteries that would test at 12 plus volts but would not start the car because they could not pump out the required amperage. If you don't have a load tester you can always substitute a known good battery to see if the car starts.

    One of the best videos you never made. Thanks for sharing your procedures with us. One point on the starter test though. Had the engine been seized, the high amp draw through the starter motor would have shown significantly lower voltage during your preliminary test. You had already ruled out a seized engine being the cause of the starter not turning. However, the engine still could have been seized, but just not the cause of no starter response.

    Professional mechanic here: Making educated guesses is not just to save us money. It's to save the customer money too. If it takes two hours diagnostic at shop rate, which is way more than $35 dollars...closer to a hundred if not more, to be 100% certain and that is more than or near the cost of the part you have done the customer a disservice if you still have to change the starter and added half again the price of the bill in probably unnecessary diagnostic time. Good video and diagnostic triage process.

    Since it's reading voltage, Maybe it can tell that a cylinder is bad because it doesn't draw down as much voltage drop while it is firing, because the starter is not having to overcome the compression stroke. That's actually a really clever test... I don't know how it would determine which is firing/ or what firing order? It's kinda funny that it showed cylinder 2 as bad, and just by dumb luck-- it actually was cylinder 2. lol.

    Schrodinger. I have an issue that you may find very interesting.
    Replaced ignition coil. Car ran amazing. Still does, but it's not perfect.
    Today I noticed sparks jumping THROUGH a spark plug wire coming from the coil. (I think wire #1).
    #1 throws a HUGE spark to the wire/boot when you pull off the wire/boot. It arcs from like 6 inches away. Then I noticed it continues to spark inside even with the wire completely set aside.
    I wonder if this was the underlying issue all along. Perhaps a short circuit damaged the old coil. (2 of the connections would click even with no wire attached).
    What I'm wondering now is...Is it just a simple broken insulation that caused the spark to leak through, OR , is it possible for TOO MUCH spark to go through a wire that it leaps right through the insulation.
    It's cold and I don't need to use the vehicle right now, but I will start investigating more later.
    Edit: I think I answered my own question. That was a huge amount of electricity coming out of the #1 wire. I guess the insulation can't contain it. Now the question is why is this happening.

    Wow, just had my cousins' car, 97 Corolla they put a new battery in, and problem of the click no crank. Road call with a drift and hammer, seen this 1000 times, so I thought. I stupidly didn't bring a voltmeter, as I was sure it was going to be the starter. So no tools, and it didn't work, darn 30 degrees outside, well I twisted the positive while he held to crank nothing, I did the same at negative and it cranked fine. Got to garage and inspected ground clamp, well the bottom part had a crack. Due to the design well, it had to go to start. Replace with a brass terminal clamp and used the original crimp looked clean and no corrosion. To touch on the voltage drop for this car, cold crank with my recording MV meter was only 117mv from clamp to engine lift hook, because the starter is on firewall side. Yup, if I only took my meter, I would have nailed that for a before and after. I kind of remember way back in 1985 the voltage drop had to be under 1 volt as per my shop foreman Pete while cranking. Good to go, hope this helps you out as well, your channel does make me use my brain a lot, having 6 years Toyota and 30+ years Mercedes. I never used a scope in all those years, except the ignition scope. Retired and bought a pocket 2 channel scope because of can problems that I now need to fix on occasions. But I already got a new starter with a lifetime warranty and it was cheap enough, I replaced it to give me the peace of mind that I wouldn't breakdown anymore

      @SchrodingersBox  Před 2 lety

      That is weird!!! yeah if I was “filming” for this video of course I would have bench tested the starter to see if it was just the solenoid and all- but it doesn’t matter “in real life” because I am not removing a starter just to replace a solenoid- at just $75 - $100 more, the whole thing is getting replaced.

    Hey Matt. I've got one I need some help with. 2002 F150, 5.4 that runs perfect when ambient temp is warm, above about 50F. But when I start it on a cold morning (45F or colder) it will usually start fine, idle up to 1200RPM or so, then slowly drop as it warms up. Then it will all of a sudden it will stumble and die. Sometimes it will run rough immediately on start and stumble. I tried to think through things that are temp dependent. AIT sensor was good. IAC was pulled off and cleaned, it was still slow to move but it helped a little, so I replaced it. No change. I pulled the EGR and cleaned it and checked it with vacuum pump. It opens fully by 15" and closed smoothly as vacuum bled off. I use an OBD scanner with the Torque app. I don't see anything in the STFT or LTFT when it happens, but it seems to be running rich. I thought maybe the crank position sensor has a short that only shows when it's cold, but I haven't pulled it to test since it's a pain to get to. On a warmer day I drove it and it was fine until the sun went down and it started to cool down. I was stopped at a stop sign and it died. Restarted right away and died at another stop and when I pulled in the driveway. Obviously temp dependent. Any ideas on what else to look at?

      So, I fixed this problem. Turned out to be MAF sensor. It was only a few years old. I tested it with a meter and it was fine. But I finally decided to unplug it when it was cold and engine normally ran rough. It ran perfectly. So I replaced MAF and now it runs perfectly.

    Interesting stuff! Wonder why you do diagnostics for free and then the 'grease monkey' work for pay, since you like diagnosing more, might as well charge for that and have another shop do the wrenching.

    • @SchrodingersBox
      @SchrodingersBox  Před 2 lety +1

      Great point! One reason is because I consider my revenue from doing the diagnostics on youtube as the compensation. The other is because I just get a satisfaction out of being able to tell people what is wrong after they already spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
      And the final reason is I still enjoy learning new techniques and things. By making the diagnostics free I generally ensure people don't go somewhere else and I get more opportunities for good case studies.
      If I didnt have this channel, yeah I would probably charge for sure though.

    Hi I was wondering if I could get some help, I have a 2011 Chevy Malibu with codes (p0171-fuel trim system lean)(p0113-AIT sensor circuit high voltage)(p0102-MAF sensor low frequency)(p0300-engine misfire detected) and basically what’s wrong with my car is when I start it the cars rpm’s will fluctuate till the car dies after a couple second and this also happens at stops, the way I usually bypass this is by putting it in neutral snd revving the engine slightly. What I noticed as well is this only happens when it’s slightly/ really cold outside, in the summer the car works fine which is weird, any help would be appreciated :)

      Hahaha good point!! I actually have a previous video from years ago where I had the computer fail with a “BSOD” during filming and I fixed the hard drive right in the video itself.
      The fact is the previous computer was over 8 years old and I really wanted to upgrade to one with a solid state drive as the conditions I put my laptop through with all the heat and vibration just make a mechanical hard drive too unreliable. Plus with my new picoscope, having the improved memory and processor speed makes for much better experience with the software especially when multitasking with scantool software which I normally do.
