  • Review of this recent release from Meng, a company I have a chequered history with...will this impress, or just depress me...-another disaster or an epiphany??? 🫣

    Meng's kits.. look fantastic.. and that is bad for my wallet.. I want both of their phantoms.. and their larger AH-64D.. They just look so well molded and designed!

    Hi Peter, I realise this is a month old now, but just a small note on the F-4G and the AN/APR-38 RHAW system. It's not actually contained in the pod you pointed to that's the AN/ALQ ECM pod. The AN/APR-38 RHAW system is in the big fat tube thing under the nose and is a replacement for the F-4E gun. Great review by the way.

    Thanks for the review. I’m tempted to get this kit. Nice to see the wine back. Cheers. Also in step 24 the front gear doors have two parts that glue together that cover up those ejector pin marks,

    Too bad I missed this one yesterday, I was away all evening with friends. My phone told me this review was coming up but... At least I can watch it now during dinner. I haven't finished the review yet but the kit seems to fine. Nice Doctor Who sound effect. I DENY I ever went crazy over all the silly ejector pins I sometimes have had to remove from certain kits!

  • @syrmalcolm
    @syrmalcolm Před 8 měsíci +1

    So. I have to say - the lead in sound effects drove me crazy. That is the same sound as my ringtone on my phone and I kept wondering if for some reason the phone was casting to the computer. :) Nice. Nice work, Gallifreyan. And this kit.. is impressing. I have not been too enthusiastic over Meng for a bit, but this one really does look sharp. I did just get done doing the F-4 in the Jolly Rogers scheme and this review tempts me to break my habit and actually build another of the similar subject. Nice review. Thanks.

    The US still uses the drogue basket system. The big tankers can use the boom on one plane and fuel two more on the outer wings IF the planes/helicopters have a fuel probe. For the planes that have to use a boom, they only have to get "close". The boom operator in the tanker then "flies" the probe into the receptacle.

    • @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab
      @Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab  Před 8 měsíci

      Interesting...I didn't know that! 👍🏻

    • @greendude96
      @greendude96 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Might be bit late, but i would like to add some tidbits to the subject.
      US indeed uses both systems, but it's a bit more complex. As the Navy uses only the drouge basket.Which is needed as they use buddy-to-buddy refueling from pods using the F/A-18 nowadays, and i think the Viking previously, and you can't really fit a boom/operator on them 😅
      On the other hand the Air Force has the boom (probably as they have to refuel larger aircraft ((bombers and transports)) so it is easier to have the operator do the docking than mess around with a massive aircraft)
      And i think the boom had a higher refuelling rate as it's a solid connection 🤔
      But all of that adds a next level of complexity as not all tankers can refuel all planes.
      For example the KC-135 only has the boom, but can be adapted with a drouge, but still can only refuel one type at a time, the. You have the KC-10, which has both and so does the new KC-46. And then we have the Airbus A330 MRTT which can have both systems, and for some reason the UK has two types of it, a only drouge one and a type with both.
      Also also, in order to "fly" the probe in, the boom has small wings on it which work as control surfaces for it :)
      Sorry for the rambling :)

    I would buy this over the ZM version. I can’t get over ZM’s miss-shaped fuselage just forward of the engine exhaust. It’s a deal killer for me now that I know about it from my own experience. I know there is a correction kit for it but I’m not doing it again like I did on the J version

    As l am watching this could it be a 10/10 looks like a lovely model from the instructions, when l was at Telford l saw a few people had bought this with good reason great detail, l wonder could this be the future Peter do you see them doing away with the seam lines that would be something hope other manufacturers take note, so close and yet so far with the score 😤 as always you get a 10/10 from me 👍

  • @NyteStalker89

    Aim-7 is not the sidewinder. Its the Sparrow. The AGM-65 is not a bomb, its a shortrange, optically guided missile. No laser needed for guidance like a hellfire from an apache. Locks on either via a targeting pod which passes the data to the missile OR, most cases the optical sight is replicated on a display in the back seat, allowing the EWSO to slew the seeker head around and lock onto a target. Once fired, the display updates to the next missile on the rack and the process repeats. A wild weasel typically will not employ weapons that need to keep the aircraft in harms way in order to provide guidance to a target. Everything the F-4G carried is essentially fire and forget so that they could get in, piss off whatever they needed to, shoot at it and get out while that weapon is inbound to the target.

    That looks like a stonker. I wish I had room and cash for one. I see that these Meng Phantoms seem to be available for anything from about £45 (slow boat from China) to £75 (get it in 2 days) Still quite cheaper than a similar Tamiya offering. One of the instruction options for the pitot is indeed plastic (F37), with a small plastic base that is used with the metal part(F31). The metal PE plates are the sliding portion of the Tailplane that sit in the horseshoe shaped guides on the fuselage.. PS AA Refuelling. Don't forget that it is only the USAF that uses that system, AFAIK, the USN and US Marines use the drogue and hose, the same as every one else in the world. The *slots* on the tailplane were fixed, there was no mechanism to move them, hence they are not slats. Only certain types (including FGR2) had these.
