I live in Milan, Italy. We like spicy food, but people in south east Asia are crazy. I have this awesome Indonesian restaurant near me, and I often order stuff from there, but since I'm not necessarily a big spicy fan (despite handing it very well) I never got anything spicy. The other day though I felt like I wanted something with a bit of a punch, so I got some sort of spicy pork soup delivered from there... And yeah that stuff was INEDIBLE. I took ONE SIP of the soup and I thought I was gonna choke. I find it impossible to believe that anybody would be able to enjoy eating the whole thing. ONE SIP had me panicking.

Yea, Indonesians usually didn't know how to hold back. Haha, if you went to a Thai or viet restaurant, they might still give you the watered version of their "spicy" simply because you're european. But most Indonesians didn't understand this concept and just directy put their "average spicy" level to bowl requested by a european.

On the contrary, to us (usa), at a certain point the spice just drowns our the flavor of the food.
Basically we're more sensitive to spice and so need less of it, but you're "numb" to spice from our perspective and thus need more of it for the same effect.

I'm Indonesian and I have never seen anyone, including myself, struggle when eating spicy Japanese brand ramen
even those who have bad tolerance usually rate it as MILD at best
maybe it's because almost every snack brand in Indonesia tend to have chili/spicy/hot flavor variety of their snacks so we kinda got used to it
or that most household immediately feed their kid spicy food as soon as they can eat solid food
or the adults like to prank kids with suddenly giving them spicy food, so they (or we) kinda have to develop a degree of tolerance in order to avoid being the victim of the prank and surprise them with a non reaction
