This is where the series kicks off and just takes the formula and perfects it. Ethan Hunt becomes a force of nature and with enough time he will wreck you no matter what
Last movie was pretty disappointing, they messed up the formula.
This is also where they basically made Ethan an unbeatable tactical mastermind superhero like Dominic Toretto from the fast and the furious. Then there's the overreliance on the deus ex machina to solve everything, again exactly like every Fast and Furious film...
To be fair since like the 3rd one they really started kicking it
their russian is with a heavy accent, but the words are correct and pronunciation is ok. This is my favourite Mission Impossible movie, I'm pretty sure it has a special place in all russian MI fans' hearts:)

I agree only on a russian language part. This is, probably, my least favorite MI movie north of the third one
Ghost Protocol is like the start of a newer "Mission: Impossible" trilogy. Gadgets malfunction like ALL the time, which the characters have to rely on their wit and each other to complete missions, the action scenes are INSANE.
…and yes, Tom Cruise is REALLY CLIMBING the building. There is no green screen. No CGI. He climbs it, then runs down it and swings on the rope. There is some amazing behind the scenes footage. This is when "Mission: Impossible" really became a global super franchise because the world realized that Tom Cruise performs all his own stunts for real!
There's a few extra wires that were removed in post, and IIRC, he's more like 30 stories up, but yeah. He's really running up and down the world's tallest building.

Only vfx for removing the cables. And probably only CGI for the sand storm

@@aaronbourque5494 There are some shots that are 100% above the 30 story mark. Maybe it was imparctical to get all their gear 130 stories up for a lot of the crazy shots, but when he has to look down and climb out, jump out the window, 100% at height.
Tom Cruise's delivery of "No shit!" is one of my favorite movie profanities ever, it cracks me up every time.
The Seattle and India scenes both were filmed in Vancouver. Check out a video called Vancouver Never Plays Itself, it's an interesting look at how the city is disguised as all kinds of different filming locations.
I'm surprised George didn't notice the nihilist villain (Michael Nyqvist) was also the villain in the original John Wick.
Great actor (RIP), but he looks very different in both.
Also the good guy in the Millenium trilogy.
To be fair, he was a lot better in JW. I agree, here, he's a very mediocre villian.

This, Rogue Nation, and Fallout are a superb trio of films. Can't wait to watch you react to the next two.
The key to these movies for me is that Ethan Hunt is hyper-competent but nothing ever goes to plan and he only succeeds by the skin of his teeth. It’s so much more interesting than the hero being unfazed by everything. I think he took a hint from Jackie Chan.
The Jackie Chan approach has always been effective (ex: John McClane), but so has the Bruce Lee approach (ex: John Matrix).
@@jp3813 Yes, the Bruce Lee approach can be very effective, but I think it takes greater skill to make audiences care about that character.
@@JoeMama410 One isn't necessarily more difficult than the other. Audiences love to see heroes dish out the villains' comeuppance just as much as they love to see underdogs rise to the challenge. In real life, people are often drawn to dominant figures like Michael Jordan & Wayne Gretzky.
What i appreciate about Tim Cruise as an action star is that he allows himself to be vulnerable, especially in the later films in this series, from Part 3 on. He's scared, he freaks out, he shows himself struggling in situations.
It's so much more interesting and compelling than someone like the Rock who barely seems flustered or bothered by the most dangerous circumstances
I don't understand how The Rock made his fame being a stunt man essentially who had to get hit and lose numerous times in the WWE for years, then becomes so pissy that his contract has a set number of punches you cannot exceed and he does none of his stunts.
Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise, and of course the legendary Jackie Chan, all superstars, never afraid to look the fool or be on the backfoot if it helps the movie. And they do their own action scenes (though Keanu only does driving stunts, not falls and the like.)
@@billbill6094 There are Jackie Chan types and there are Bruce Lee types. Two sides of a coin. The appeal of the former is to watch them pull themselves out of a difficult situation, while the appeal of the latter is to witness them cause the villains' comeuppance. Both can be done at the same time, of course. But it's nice to have variety.
Out of all the stunts, this entry has two of my absolute favorites, the first being climbing the Burj Khalifa and the second is the chase during the sandstorm. Such amazing filmmaking
Hanging out the side of that building knowing there are miles of shit filled trucks stretching into the distance below you... I don't know how you go to a country so poorly planned it allows that let alone hang out of a building so poorly planned.

Their sewage system was undergoing an overhaul (since Dubai is growing so quickly) and it would have been very expensive to connect to the old system and then to the new system. So what is a temporary solution for a minor issue in one building has been latched onto by internet trolls as a way to denigrate Dubai.
@@arnoldvosloo220 If i wanted to denigrate Dubai I would mention slavery. I was only seeking to point out how uncomfortable I would be trusting my safety to a building and local government more concerned with appearances than actual safety and infrastructure.

Haha, I love that Simone's go to response to anything -- monsters, villains, heights, cringe, spiders -- is always "Fu*k right off!" HAHA It's like she's speaking to the anxiety itself, not whatever causes it. And George! "Maybe it won't be that bad, high enough that it's like --NOPE!" What a champ!
Fun fact! The insurance company covering Ghost Protocol refused to cover any stunt involving Tom hanging off the worlds tallest building. So Tom fired them and found one that would.
The most disheartening thing about the villain being behind the mask in Dubai is that earlier Cruise and Renner were arguing about just killing the guy to take his place, but Cruise insisted the villain could get his hands on the launch codes later. Little did they know the messenger WAS the villain, and they could have just ended the movie right there.
That hallway projector scene was one of the the coolest scene in any MI movie ever!!
Brad Bird did an awesome job with this movie. He should direct more live-action stuff.
The only other live-action movie he has directed so far was Disney’s Tomorrowland. It wasn’t very good, but I’d like to see him try again

I'm a Londoner living in Berlin and can confirm that the parking garage is real, it's by VW and located in Wolfsburg - it's where they keep their new cars. So basically when a customer goes to collect their car it brings it down like a vending machine in around 90 seconds. If you're ever in Germany and you're into cars, you should visit the museum it's a part of.

I totally agree, his two Pixar movies were trying to aim for adults, but they were still limited by the medium and the G/PG ratings. After seeing those I thought, "Just go make movies for adults, Brad, it's clearly what you want to do!"

There's one little reference in the movie for the people paying really close attention: when Ethan leaves the safehouse in Dubai after the Burj Khalifa to go see Bogdan, he first meets a blonde guy on a boat with a mask. Thats the same actor and mask and keyword ("Dunhill lighter") from the first Mission: Impossible movie when Ethan poses as Job and goes to meet Max.
Extremely fun reaction to this one from you two. They've all been good, but watching you flip out over the spy tricks, stunts, and twists was like seeing it for the first time again. Can't wait for you to watch Rogue Nation, which is my favorite M:I to date, plus Fallout and Dead Reckoning Part 1 (which will be on digital this month) are both very close.
Oh, also, you can see Josh Holloway's character throw something at the ground as he jumps off that roof at the beginning, before he turns around and shoots the guys pursuing him. So he has a spy gadget that explodes into that cushion that catches him.
If I remember correctly, the last scene was supposed to be set in Seattle, but like 95% of the times where Seattle is the setting, they actually film in Vancouver. I once asked someone with the Washington State Filmworks why this is. He said labor and production costs are less in BC, as is film permitting.
George - I have the same reaction to heights. I watched The Walk - the documentary about the guy who walked a tightrope between the World Trade Center towers. I was yelling at the screen, "Get off the wire - you made it." Even though I knew the guy survived it, it still drove me absolutely insane.
Free Solo was the same.
This is where it really starts for me, granted I love the third one, but they hit the formula and work it from here on. I absolutely LOVE how the plan never actually goes the way it's sposed to in this one. The team adapts and still pulls it off. It's also nice because you don't have to depend on a twist or something like... "that was my plan all along" even when it doesn't seem to be going right.
this actually was the very first mission Impossible I ever watched and it made me fall in love with the series.
While this took the franchise to the next level, I will always appreciate MI:3 the most, because it turned things around after the second one. That being said, it's great that Simon Pegg got a bigger role with this one.
Too bad they couldn't get Maggie Q back due to scheduling conflicts back then. Her training and previous work made her perfect for these kinds of action roles.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure it was this one where Tom was filming a scene chasing someone across rooftops, at some point he jumped across to a rooftop and broke his ankle (it literally turned straight up), and Tom just finished climbing up on the roof and keeps running….the man is an absolute machine

It was harder to recognize but it wasn't just the end scene that was filmed in Vancouver. I think everything shown to be in Mumbai, aside from the party palace, was filmed in Vancouver.
Fun fact about the Burj Khalifa: If it ever remained without power for long enough (i.e., abandoned for years/decades, not a day's outage), the rods underground that keep it upright via friction would begin to erode and the high winds would push on it until the whole thing toppled over. Those rods underneath it have to be electrified to repel the elements that would erode the foundation.

Cruise did that Burj Khalifa stunt on his own with zero CGI and he does all his stunts no matter how batshit crazy they are...
MI really finds itself in this film. I remember after watching the 3rd in just feeling like it was time to call it a wrap so I didn't watch any of the subsequent films for a while but I'm really impressed with how they found their rhythm. Also 'red you're dead' is a pretty common saying for a lot of equipment designs. I used to buy climbing harnesses that came pre-painted with red on one side of the buckles to remind you that if you didn't the buckle wrong, you would fall.
I'll never forget seeing THAT stunt scene for the first time. I wasn't a huge fan of the series yet (this movie sucked me in), but went to see this on opening night because it had a 12 minute preview of The Dark Knight Rises along with it, if you watched it in IMAX. So, imagine seeing that sequence on the biggest screen possible with all of sound and HD you could imagine. That first swooping shot over the building and I legit had my stomach drop cause it felt like being suspended in air.
What a movie. What a stunt. What a fun franchise.
No one ever sees him throw the inflatable air bag. It's actually one of my favorite gadgets and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
I do believe that was the most tense I've seen you two and certainly the most uncomfortable I've ever seen George.. just be glad it wasn't on IMAX! Great reaction guys and a fab film!

Seeing the Burj Khalifa scene in IMAX was a pretty amazing experience. Probably one of the most memorable I can remember. And seeing that failed jump made the audience collectively gasp.

How excited Simone got for a reversible jacket compared to the rest of the tech! >< get that it was during an exciting part of the movie but still makes me chuckle that a reversible jacket got the biggest reaction :P

Easily my favourite so many awesome set pieces in this one i love how Jeremy Renners character fits in,how they make out Julia died them reveal it was all planned with the look at a distance from Ethan and her,the prison scene with Dean martin in the background,The kremlin(the giggling during that scene🤣🤣), and off course the entire Burj Khalifa sequence.I dont need to finish the video to know this is gonna be an awesome reaction guys!😊
Simone in the green dress in the thumbnail? I couldn't click fast enough. I give George great credit -- a friend of mine came with me to see Alita: Battle Angel on the big screen and he had the same problem with heights. I agree, it's tough to top Philip Seymour. I think at one point Ethan says, Everything failed -- except this team, which I guess comes close to being the moral of the movie. Thank you so much!

Saw it in IMAX, 5 days before it's initial release.
Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratoutoulle and The Iron Giant) directing his first live-action film amazingly.
From part 4 onward, they utilize IMAX technology for core visual scenes in these sequels.
These missions stay fully connected (thanks to J.J. Abrams as producer).
This one definitely proved that Cruise is one of the best actors to ever do action period.
The cast (IMF, villains) was great including Jeremy Renner being super busy
between M-I, the MCU and the Bourne franchise.
Not too many 4th installments are this good.
RIP to Michael Nyqvist as the villain Cobalt/Kurt Hendricks.
This is my favorite Mission Impossible movie. Ethan flying and running on buildings. Bad luck all mission long and still got the job done. Simply amazing
When I watched your last MI reaction, I realised something. I've not seen 3. I didnt really like 2, but I thought 2 was 3. So I thought it was a dead franchise. Then 4 comes along I randomly watch it, utterly loved it. Felt like Fast 5 for me in terms of rejuvenation. Fast5 is my favourite of the franchise. I believe its by far the best one. I also feel Ghost Protocol is the best way, but not the distance Fast 5 has on its franchise.
The Burj Khalifa set piece is the best set piece in the series for me. Just the way it's designed and directed, how the tension escalates perfectly. Brad Bird should go back and direct another action movie.
Great reaction guys. There's a really great behind the scenes video that shows how they did the planning, training and filming of the tower scenes, well worth a look.
It genuinely makes me happy that you guys are blowing through the MI franchise. They're top-tier action/spy movies. Watching this movie when it was released on an IMAX screen genuinely set off my vertigo and had me gripping the sides on my seat!
The only thing that would make me happier right now is if you guys were to finish the Apes movies and watch War for the Planet of the Apes. Seriously, you guys stopped short of watching the best of the trilogy!

Just like the first movie a lot of this one is filmed in Prague. The "Kremlin" was filmed in Prague castle, where the Czech president rules from. There are event some Czech actors for this one.
The villain in the film is played by the Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist, who was also the villain in the first John Wick film where he played Viggo Tarasov. Michael Nyqvist starred with Noomi Rapace in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, which consists of the films:

Mikael Nyqvist, from sweden, played The bad guy in this. Great actor. Died of cancer in 2017.
The main villain in this was the late, great Michael Nyqvist, you'd know him from John Wick, he played the father of Reek, who killed the dog.
He was also the main male lead in the original (and best) version of the Millenium Trilogy (Girl with the dragon tattoo etc...)
It's funny, I saw this ages ago and thought it was the best of the first 4 movies, but none of the plot stayed with me at all. But watching your reaction it was way better than I remembered.
The next one really is great. It's like they got a feel for where they wanted to go with the franchise long term from this one, and then nailed it in Rogue Nation (and Fallout for that matter). Am looking forward to seeing the last 2 eventually.
The series gets better and better. I can't wait for y'all to make your way to "Fallout" and "Dead Reckoning".

The close up of the ring is A113 the room where Pixar started, Brad Bird used to work there and the robotic voice is the same in the incredibles franchise.
At the time of release most of the components of the Hallway screen tech existed in isolation except for one characteristic of the screen itself. The polymere that creates the screen in shuch a way is super light and super smooth on deployment totally existed, what it didnt do was been perfectly reflective, mirror like, it will always look visible diffuse on the eye, like projectiong something to the side of camping tent.
However, the robot arm that can recognize and follow eyesight totally existed at the time, the real time backprojection calculation (recording something and calcultating the appropiate transformation to reproject) totally existed (maybe it needed a bigger device than something iPad like), i actually worked in something like this real time video transformation in my time in university around the release of the movie.
Im working from memory here, not looking into google or something, but i havent read that something like in the movie has been finally made, but again, the components were there.
One piece of the movie that did become a reality was the concept BMW in the third act of the movie. Google and BMW made it happen a few years back.
Sandstorms really do suck, the sand is rough, it's course, and it gets everywhere!
Wistrom's actor was the Finnish voice of Snork in The Moomins.
I think the best part of this one and the ones that follow is they started acknowledging just how rediculous many of the stunts/events are. Instead of just..diving head on into it like its normal.. toms more "Wtf"
Yea this was the beginning of the legend that is Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, everything before was just a warmup but Rogue Nation and Fallout are in legendary status.

This was actually I think my first MI movie, I may had seen one of the others when I was a kid but this one really caught my attention, it was a welcome surprise to find out Brad Bird directed it in the credits, still haven’t seen the latest one yet

Simonen's cold open was so funny as I had just watched Popcorn In Beds reaction to ZombieLand.
Totally with George on this on - I cannot sit still while I watch that scene (even though I've seen the movie like a dozen times) - primal fear, ACTIVATED!
The Kremlin hallway tech is basically how the Volume works (used in filming Mandalorian)
1:46 It wasn't on his back. He threw it to the ground before his fall. You can _kind_ _of_ see at 1:42 that he makes a quick throwing motion downward with his hand before he twists around.
If you think the Burj Khalifa is high, there is a glass walkway at the Grand Canyon suspected 4,757 feet (1450 meters) above the canyon floor. And yes, it's AWESOME, George }:D
This movie is so so impressive and good. It is not my favorite because 5th and 6th one exist and they are awesome, but it is a really great action film. The stunts are amazing but the plot is very cohesive and I like that things are not always perfect and you see them struggling to get the mission done. I am really excited for your reaction to the next ones.
I have the same phobia as you George and even after watching this one multiple times, my palms continue to sweat like crazy. It is ridiculous but I cannot control the panicking mode I am while watching him climbing. Also, knowing he did that for real makes it even worse ahsiohas
Rumour was that Renner was meant to be getting set up to take over from Cruise, but then this one EXPLODED AND the Mummy failed miserably and back to MI he came.

I get George's fear of heights. I once followed a super hot girlfriend up a cellphone/radio tower of some kind, thinking it was going to be awesome at the top. The higher I got, the more my limbs started resisting what I was doing. It wasn't that I didn't have the strength. I was super buff and fit, in the prime of my life, but my brain started resisting me climbing, literally. Halfway up I realized I couldn't climb another rung, and I called out: "Nikki, I'm stuck!". It was super embarrassing. I was so high up that I could barely even let go to climb back down, it took me a minute. Another time, actually, two separate times, years apart, I visited the Foresthill Bridge in California - the highest bridge in the state at 800-something feet. You drop something off the bridge and just when you think it's going to hit the ground it keeps going. I had a friend who decided it was a good idea to hop up onto the railing and walk along it. I was maybe 8 feet away from him, and I was frozen. I couldn't move toward or away because my *body* was afraid of influencing him in any way that might make him fall. Years later, a whole other friend, who gave me a ride to meet the lady who is now the mother of our two children at that same bridge, also decided to walk the railing too - and the same thing happened to me. I froze, completely, all I could do was beg either of them to come back down onto the safe side of the railing. Being on the bridge doesn't freak me out like it did when my dad would drive us over it when I was a kid, as long as me and everyone else is on the safe side of the railing. We rode the ferris wheel in Vegas in February this year for our oldest daughter's 12th b-day, and while our youngest was tap-dancing back and forth in the bubble, and m'lady and I were enjoying the ride walking around looking in all directions, halfway up I noticed that our birthday girl was just sitting there, petrified. She has the same fear I did as a kid, but we were safe in the bubble!
Funny how Lea Seydoux went from Sabine Moreau to Bond girl Madeleine Swann in the James Bond movies.
This is my favorite Mission Impossible the others are more serious. This one's more fun to watch because it doesn't take itself so seriously. I love how all of their fancy gadgets keep breaking on them when they need them. it makes the situation seem more realistic. I think because this one is so fun and funny to watch it makes it easier to enjoy it. and to want to watch it over and over again. the other ones, I watched them, I enjoy them. But I don't feel the need to watch them again.

I watched this in theaters forgetting that I didn't watch the third one and I think I started to realize it when Renner's character started in on his back story and I got confused. Just think, the last "MI" that I saw was the second one, so I felt there was a reason this angle wasn't resonating with me for some reason. Then, spoils the ending of the previous film by its reveal at the end. But despite that, I really enjoyed the film and the fact that most of these films that detail a scheme or a heist are more exciting when they don't go according to plan.
This movie is my favorite. The team collected is the best of all the movies.
I had not noticed the A113 on the ring before, but with this being a Brad Bird movie the Pixar connection is a cool little detail.

I got stuck on a slide as a child for hours. Fire department had to be called. All because of an irrational fear of heights. I saw this in IMAX. Those firemen were not as kind.

17:05 I'm not afraid of heights, but two movie did give me the heebie-jeebies related to height. in Mission to Mars when they exited their ship just in their spacesuit trying to make it to a nearby resupply module. the view from above as they move through space its just the planet below. it was a nerve wracking scene. then in the movie Gravity. every scene of Sandy moving through space with just her spacesuit was also nerve wracking and still have me a height netvousness thing. .

Mission impossible fallout is hands down the best one. Might be a fun one to even watch a behind the scenes of all the stunts he does in it after the reaction.
personally i see 'Ghost Protocol' as the movie where the franchise found its identity. each follow up film has a similar energy that take things a step or two higher than the last. because of that i would also say this is the best one. "the beginning of the beginning". -- and 7:51 technically the technology does exist it's just in pieces. the 'Tobii Eye Tracker' is a reality so someone just has to pair it together with other required elements like a mini projector.
The Burj Khalifa scene es really nerve wracking to see...and the fact that was all done for real makes it even more terrifing! So damn cool to see this level of commitment from Tom Cruise to the franchise and avoid the overused and crappy CGI scenes to impress with fake stuff like almost all new movies today. :)
I remember when promoting this movie, they kept showing Cruise climb the building. By the way, have you guys watched Grandma’s Boy. It’s hilarious. Love to see your guys reaction
the part where they are running out of the building in india is actually the vancouver convention centre
