Nice kata. But his timing was a bit off. Needs to slow down . Jion is a powerful kata. Needs to show the explosion on some moves. Seen better during the 80’s in real life. Some of the moves been tweek of the traditional kata. Overall a nice kata and good poise by the karateka.

I have seen this kata performed at various speeds. This was well done.

I have to say I never really did like Luca's kata, since back from the Michael Milon days, but now the past couple of years I think he (or it's probably me :P) has matured quite a bit and I like his kata a lot more now. If ONLY he would pay attention to just some of the internet critics and work on say, 1 or 2 or his faults - because he STILL has them, like his hikete for example, he would be all that much better. I can't believe team Italia doesn't think there is anything wrong with his hikete

So many negative comments! The first tenant of the dojo kun by master Funakoshi states: "Seek perfection of character". Karate if trained right should a positively humbling experience. The fourth tenant of Funakoshi's dojo kun states "Respect others". Disagreement can be expressed in a positive manner however there is a time, place and way to do so.
Does Valdesi performs Jion different than you do? Not every organization performs katas in the exact same way. Even the way shotokan practitioners perform the Heian katas (Pinan) is somewhat different than how they were conceived by Anko Itosu (Funakoshi's teacher).
Katas have been revised and adapted for many reasons. With modern karate it has to do with the range of combat gradually shifting from close to a medium range. Other mild modifications are in lieu of making the katas more visually attractive for sports karate. As long as you learn how to apply the embedded techniques in all ranges of combat there's nothing wrong with this.
Of course if you disagree with Valdesi (6th dan & world champion) you could enter the WKF World Karate Championship yourself and post a video of your performance.

He doesnt know how to apply the technics and his katas are not even visually attractive what are you talking about?

@Luis LemosAh, I did not you guys knew each other. This is so cool! Did you kicked his ass in sparring? I am asking since you say you know that Luca does not know how to apply the technics, you definitely must have sparred with him. Since you mentioned his kata does not look good I imagine that you could do it better. Why don't you share a video, I think I rather learn it from you than from him 😊

that's the worst kind of argument ever.
1st of all: kata was technically mediocre, lacked purpose, aim, the feet stances were terrible, no technique felt real or even complet to its fullest intent - in ANY Karate style, JKA Shotokan being clearly the style he's presenting. It was only made to look appealing to the audience (and, in my opinion, failed even that task). The kata is supposed to be about strenght, power, stability, not speed; it's not a dance nor a race.
2nd: the fact that he's a 6th dan world champion doesn't excuse him from this criticism - in fact, it only holds him more responsible for the performance he showed.
3rd: the fact that some of the people here criticizing him wouldn't do a better job doesn't excuse Valdesi from the criticism itself - in fact, it holds him more responsible for showing a performance so weak that even the weaker than him notice it.

I'm sorry, but this is NOT karate. This guy is super fast and a great athletete. He may even be able to kick my ass in a real fight. But as for kata, this is as sloppy as it gets. Yes, very low stances. He's in great shape. Sorry though. This is NOT Japanese karate. But, thanks for posting. I don't have any videos on here, so let the criticism begin.

njtr agreed, I've only just learned this kata, but something about how he does it here seems...different. He's probably just rushing the techniques.

I beg to disagree. I think his rendition of the KATA is very nice. His movements are what they should be, and if there are any slight differences from what you were taught by your sensei, it's merely a matter of personal expression.
It's like learning the alphabets a, b, c, d, e ===> z All of us will have different handwritings when our fingers move the pen along. It's also like the KIAI. No two karateka shout the KIAI identically.
I do not think KATA should be learned like trying to make a photostat copy of the sensei. As long as we get the stances correct, and we know what the moves are and do them right, for eg, a knife hand block has to be a knife hand block, the rest are merely aesthetics and showmanship.
You can do the most beautiful KATA, better still if you have a nicely proportioned body, but that does not mean you can fight. And those who can fight may perform ugly KATA, albeit correctly. What is your objective in learning Karate? To do KATA beautifully like what people learning Tai Chi are doing? Or for self defence?
