He sounds really interesting. I’d love to see an interview where he’s allowed to finish thoughts.
Thanks for this, I was in the mood to watch Charlie Brooker being interrupted for an hour
She does a great job belittling Brooker's early achievements. Reviewing games for a living and having cartoons published is pretty fucking good going for anyone.
Wezzipooh Kind of depends where they're being published.
She asks a question and then interrupts and asks another one without getting the answer for the first. Quite a frustrating interview to watch.
Much love for your picture good sir!
Brooker is great, his shows are are amazing.
I totally agree about the appeal of obscure references and not understanding a lot of references when you're a kid. You can usually get the gist of a joke or comment even if there's a word you don't understand, and looking stuff up can lead to interesting discoveries and a sense of satisfaction when you "get it" on repeat viewing.
Now we know where Brooker got the idea for the Philamena Cunk character.
Well, he was submitting his cartoons and writing for a newspaper as a teenager already, then writing for various papers later... But thanks for the encouragement : D
Thanks, love Brooker.
What I gathered was that try and do anything and everything, and hopefully something will happen. You're 21. You've got 79 years to go. I wouldn't worry too much about getting 'a foot on the career's ladder' at 21.
Do courses. Ignore the media hating on Job Seekers.
Granted you posted 10 months ago, but I hope if you ever read this it is comforting.
I'm 21 and wasting my life away, I REALLY needed Brooker's advice on life and career. Thanks! (Only wish the interviewer lady would have let him talk a bit more freely).
Love Charlie Brooker, one of the few around who has real integrity and does not pander to anyones approval,he is totally himself and has a mind of his very own
Everyone moaning, Grace Dent is not an interviewer, she's a long time friend of Charlie's and knows the Tv industry as well as he does. She's talking to him in a way that conversations go, which for me is quite refreshing to watch, rather than QUESTION..... ANSWER..... QUESTION..... ANSWER..... so on
It would be ok if they were talking in a private situation but there are people watching live and there are cameras recording, the TV Interview "language" exist for the sake of understanding the message. She is interrupting him and not letting me hear the answer.
We can moan if we want. Plus it's what he would've wanted.
Road Rash was amazing.. and Toe Jam and Earl !
I can't decide if I'm in love with Grace Dent, or if I completely and utterly loathe her. 🤔
Probably both.
She loves the sounds of her own voice doesn't she? Why doesn't somebody who is actually interested in Brooker interview him?
I have never been a Dent-ite... but I am not seeing Brooker feeling interrupted here as others seem to. If anything, he appears glad to be prompted to a new thought. I sense that he is one of us who becomes more and more anxious the longer we talk, so a non-hostile boundary is helpful.
I really enjoyed this. It was nice to see Charlie not playing that angry, bitter character. He is really interesting.
Awful interview. The interviewer keeps interrupting far too much.
This isn't her day job...
I have seriously no fucking idea how hard it is to have a 50 minute interview with an interesting character, and keep it interesting. Keep the conversation moving. To hit all the main points of his career, and to hit all the marks...
She's not perfect here. But i've heard a lot worse.
I studied Fine Art at University.
Moved to where I wanted to live (home) and found I couldn't get *any* work at all. Self-employment as an artist is like a lottery.
I am now training to be Plumber.
If you're without direction, and you're doing "nothing", at least try getting on college courses. Some may be paid by the government/assembly (you don't need to pay) and you gain more skills/get to know yourself better/get into a career you can tolerate/like.
I'm hoping Plumbing works for me.
I thought the questioning was pretty great actually. Even if it wasn't, Brooker would no doubt have reacted by making entertainment out of nothing as per usual
It's good sometimes when an interviewer sticks to the line of questions they've planned and tries to keep the interviewee sort of 'on course', otherwise you can get said interviewee going off on their own and giving answers they've already given in 10 other interviews.
But hey, why consider that when there's an opportunity to petulantly slag off someone (who might well read these stupid comments).
Because even if that's the intention, this is supposed to be about hearing what Charlie Brooker has to say, and what we end up with is a confusing, condescending mess.
But why consider that when there's an opportunity to patronise everyone else?
Bedrinonen Alright, I was being a bit patronising I suppose. And I can't be arsed watching the thing again to go back and look for evidence either way. The posts on here though about Ms Dent are pretty undignified.
Also if you're gonna argue with someone use your real name; have the balls to be held accountable for what you say in public.
Anthony Coleman
I'm impressed, you've got some serious balls to put a real name on your CZcams account. Do people track you down and hold you accountable often? I feel ashamed that I could never be so brave.
Oh agreed, there are definitely some undignified comments on this CZcams video, like Onmysheet, who said;
"Grace Dent's the kind of woman you'd love to fuck after you've had one of the shittest days. Just because of those tits."
Also, when I read J0eCh0p's "shut up BIATCH", that left a sour taste in my mouth.
But probably the worst came from johnbonhamsinger:
"It pains me to dislike a video with Charlie Brooker in it, but Grace Dent made this unwatchable. She didn't actually care about or listen to his answers, just wanted to keep asking him stuff, even if it meant interrupting his answers and anecdotes. Just keep watching soaps, love."
I mean, where's this guy's evidence that she even watches soaps? Disgraceful personal attack.
Blaming Grace Dent entirely for this botch job is a bit unfair though, she was probably told by someone above her she needed to stop the "interviewee going off on their own" and to "stick ['on course'] to the line of questions they've planned". Those instructions could've pressured her to dominate the transaction without listening to, or engaging with, anything the interviewee is saying.
Bedrinonen Surely it isn't difficult to hold someone to account if you have their name, is it? You could probably find me on a social media site quite easily if you wanted to.
I'm going to bow out now, because although admirably rigorous in your reply you're being a bit of a bore. Sarcasm in moderation in the future, maybe? Anyway, enjoy your evening.
Anthony Coleman
Wouldn't want to bore you like Charlie does with answers that require over 2 minutes concentration.
From now on, I too shall worship Concision.
Charlie Brooker is such an amusing guy
There are very few modern TV celebrities I'd really love to have a conversation with but Charlie Brooker is definitely one of them.
Quite interesting I didn't know most of this.
"Why do we have to watch some fucking hippos?" so true XD
Grace Dent seems to be the main topic of conversation here!
Decent interview, interesting guy.
For fuck's sake...
The point of an interviewer is to push and prod the interviewee in directions that will prove fruitful. If you don't want an interviewer with agency (one that doesn't interrupt or re-direct the convernsation) then just watch Charlie on his own.
This interview is probably one of the better ones because it actuallly resembles a proper dialogue.
Franticalmagic Seems typical of anyone involved with The Guardian. For some reason they try to push their own personality into an interview.
Nah... it's typical of a number of interview styles, Paxman et al, none of which are limited to The Gaurdian or particularly present in it.
Franticalmagic There is a massive difference between trying to cut through spin and stonewalling and inserting yourself into an interview.
Any time I've read a Guardian interview the writer always makes the interview experience all about themselves. Beginning with "I'm sitting in a coffee shop waiting for blah blah blah the weather is blah blah"
The snippy stuff is definitely some tabloid experience.
An interview features an interviewee and interviewer. The insertion of the interviewer is unavoidable without some very heavy post-prod editing.
Making a report that is intimate or reflexive of the authors journey towards and around a topic is very common. Its pioneer is Hunter S. Thompson: not a man whose writing could be considered standard Guardian fare.
My guess is that the complaints about the interviewer are a product of Charlie's cult status. Figures that tend to an alternative crowd tend to have very protective fans. Show them an interview that features two alternating inputs and whether it is Chomsky or Charlie, Brand or Zizek they inevitably howl like a retarded dog that's bitten down too hard on its own tail.
Often the people most upset by an interviewers' conduct are not the interviewees but rather the interviewee's mentally un-balanced fans.
The reporter is "biased", "not-listening", "egotistic", "moronic"... the litany of perceived sins is infinite and rarely holds up to scrutiny.
Franticalmagic Thompson was pretty much the ideal for Journalism, pushing new ground and re-establishing standards. He was an inspiration for many, but tabloids have nothing to do with journalism and everything to do with shifting paper (or clicks these days).
Hack tabloid journalists earn their scorn, not just from armchair intellectuals, but from actual journalists. The questioning methods used in tabloids are geared toward getting something quotable rather than finding out something interesting.
So when people spout insults here and there, it's to be expected really. Some people don't seem to mind it, while for others it borders offensive.
You mention Chomsky, can I assume you meant the Buckley talk?
That's one case where some criticism was legit. Buckley would lead with questions that he wanted to answer, pushing his own disposition out there while stifiling Chomsky's at every turn.
i think a good interviewer realises when the subject is going for a vital point - --i REALLY ENJOYED THIS INTERVIEW VERY MUCH HOWEVER WATCH IT BACK AND SEVERAL TIMES THE INTERVIEWER -NOT REALISING A BIG POINT WAS COMING ASKS A QUESTIONS THAT NEARLY RAILROADS THE POINT/INTERESTING BIT ABOIUT TO BE DESCRIBED…SORRY BOUT CAPITALS MY COMPUTER SHITTTTT LOL X X X
It's frustrating that every time he starts talking about something interesting in detail, she cuts him off with an unrelated question. What I mostly got out of this is that I'd like a chance to have a conversation with the man myself.
Hi! I'm a project of a screenwritter from Catalonia, Spain for the moment and may I say Charlie is such an inspiration in so many ways... Thanks for uploading this and dieing to go to anys Scottland to any event like this. Thaks again!
I think Charlie Brooker has come back in time to be future me. It's unerring how these people are too similar.
Charlie Brooker is possibly the best person eva.
If you're frustrated with the way the questioning went, this editing covers the same ground but with a lot more space for Brooker for speak: czcams.com/video/dhALYfD_pfk/video.html. Perhaps as a result, the interview runs for almost double the time.
god damn, ive done nothing but smoke weed n play video games in my 20s. now im 30... and still doing that.
That 'Hopeless Interviewer' is respected guardian journalist Grace Dent. As a professional, she has to ask a wide range of questions and make sure it all gets covered in the time limit.
She interviews people as part of her job description. Grace is an interviewer in control of the interview here. Brooker's wild tangents are part of his appeal but this interviewer has thought highly enough of him to write lots of questions for him but they need to be covered quickly
I think it's more her manner/ attitude that people are objecting to.........
I don't think that though, so I don't know what to tell you.
why is Grace Dent famous?
Bad interviewer...
Who is she?
I think she's great. Although I can't understand how someone couldn't like the Beatles.
I Like It when tHe kittens walks across the stage.
Terrible interviewer. Isn't on his level of wit atall, you can tell she forces herself to laugh sometimes when she doesn't get his humour. She keeps interrupting him and it feels more like she's interrogating him. It feels more like she's there trying to analyse him than interview him.
IVE WORKED WITH CHARLIE BROOKER AND COMPLETELY DID NOT GET HIS HUMOUR ON THE DAY -ID NEVER SEEN ANY OF HIS WORK
I BOUGHT ALL HIS BOOKS AND WATCHED ALL HE APPEARED ON / IN
I NOW THINK HES A FUCKING GENIUS---- (
I PLAYED A PERSON DANCING WITH A TOILET ROLL BTW WHEN HE ATTACKED BRITAINS VERSION OF GLEE X LOL -)
Did Grace Dent leave her personality at home?
How about listening to him instead of gazing at your pen. Also how could you not understand why?
its not really an interview, its more of a laid back interrogation
"I like to not have contact with people" ahahahhaha
39:49 literally describes Gogglebox.
He gets onto a good story and she interrupts him.
Charlton ! ha ha fuckin Charlton .............. explains alot
Grace Dent is awesome, this is a conversation between people who regard each other as equals. That's right, it's called a "con-ver-sa-tion", try it sometime they can be fun
Oh come on now. All happy and jolly to find a Brooker video I haven't seen and it's bloody Grace Dent hosting. #cringe
It's like she's doing a show and tell on Brooker. Ask a brief question, shut up, listen and occasionally nod. So many rubbish, fake and over-exaggerated people on TV but Brooker represents real people
Too be fair she's just doing her job, albeit a tad on the nervous side. But yes, I think she should have explored some of the questions in a little more depth.,.,.,.
He seems really nervous and uncomfortable, just look at the body language. Love his programs.
I feel like Grace is bringing her own agenda into the interviewer like she has her own take on Charlie Brooker and what he's done rather than just asking open questions.
Also what is wrong with her,why does she keep on picking up her board with the questions on...honestly feels like shes really trying to get one up on him and hes just being open and genuine ...uncomfortable to watch especially when he is being very open and vulnerable
Nice interview with Charlie, but didn’t like the interviewers style of asking the questions. Let the man speak!
in the first 2 minutes she ignores anything he says. there is no interaction at all
0:56 I was annoyed and 1:16 I'm quitting. If you're going to ask a stock of questions with no flexibility then just send whoever your interviewing an email, don't waste your time, speaking to their face.
I like this girl & Charlie B is obviously brilliant, but ffs, her questions are a bit formulaic
Awful interviewer. Charlie is great.
Let the man talk FFS
ummm... they are mates? Kind of an oddball aren't ya
She looks a bit like my cousin.
she listens as badly as she interviews..... its a shame as Brooker is one of the most interesting people on tv.
What tv show was your childhood like? The only thing worse than that vapid and meaningless question is her incessant interrupting which prevents him from answering.
I've not seen other stuff she has done so maybe she was having a bad day, but I have to concur with the other comments, she is a hopeless interviewer.
There are way too many sexist comments on here
They're good friends (worked together in both print and TV), but I agree she's too slack.
Oh, I do read replies. It's frustrating because first you're inexperienced and considered utterly dumb, and then you're just too old, and that's life, deal with it. I'm hoping I can make something of myself, in time.
Thanks so much for replying, and for your advice ;]
Her whole demeanour just seems slightly off. I don't mean to be rude but she is a bit odd; not that I have a leg too stand on when it comes to that. I have been described as odd on a fair few occasions.
Her interupting is indeed very annoying, the job of an interviewer is to make sure the interviewee is being interesting, not to stop them saying interesting thing to give inane detail.
i think she studied that shrink woman in sopranos before this interview. iirc she was on screenwipes and was good on those but interviewer she is not. good to hear his full story though, top guy.
he thinks his upbringing was normal and there in lies the problem with British media.
No, the interruption here is so annoying. I'm sure she's lovely, but it's driving me mad!
I thought she was good at interviewing
aww jesus shes just imitating james lipton.....badly
she ruined this interview
Terrible Interviewer. Not listening or having a conversation.
what's everyone's problem with her?
TheKlink Did you not notice her constantly interrupting him?
I hate.
Dent is terrible. She doesn't like The Beatles! That says it all.
Gosh, that interviewer's awful.
It pains me to dislike a video with Charlie Brooker in it, but Grace Dent made this unwatchable. She didn't actually care about or listen to his answers, just wanted to keep asking him stuff, even if it meant interrupting his answers and anecdotes.
Just keep watching soaps, love.
