Even if it is a sad and grotesque topic like the horrors of war and the atrocities being inflicted into innocent human beings.

I felt this exact way when I watched the video for "Thy art is murder - They shall know another" a couple years back. As someone who just got his first kid a few months before, these lyrics in the chorus were pretty tough on me (and still makes my gut turn); "I'm not afraid to die! - I'm afraid I'll survive - and have to watch you suffer!" You should check that song out if you havent. If nothing else, than as therapy. Because now, today, when I see shit like this I just can take it better. Don't know why exactly.
This is why I love art. It presents our reality to us in a way that we can palette. So we can be aware and be entertained at the same time. Sometimes art can make us feel more than we expected, but its because the aspect of our world presented in the art form, whether it be music or comedy or painting or whatever, has been ignored for too long and has become a huge problem in our society or even our world. Its like a growth or a tumor. If you ignore it, it's only gonna get bigger and consume us. Art is what shows us what we ignore. It shatters the illusion of if we ignore it, then it'll go away.
