East Penn Railroad: A W&W Power Lease

- In mid-June, 2011, East Penn Railroad experienced a derailment while heading North on the W&N Branch. Since the derailed car was on the end of the train, they couldn't get their own power on that end. This meant finding power from another source. Since CSX road power is too heavy for the branch, they called on W&W to lease one of their engines to help rerail the car. SW900 #915 was sent due to her high tractive effort and horsepower compared to the aging SW-1s. We will see 915 head for Landenberg Junction, wait for clearance before heading through Wilsmere Yard and up the W&N. Then we see them trying to get the car back on the tracks up at Granogue on DuPont property. Part 2 consists of a cabride on day 2, starting with more attempts and final succeeding in getting the car back on. Then we ride the cab back down the W&N, where video stops at Elsmere Junction.
This engine is cute! It reminds me of either a shoe, or the shape of a basset hounds head! It does it's job well. I like the scenery. I hope it lives on forever.
I love it when Switchers go balls-out, like it did to rerail the car. That was awesome, especially the cab view. Just shows even a "little switcher" has "big muscle". Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it.
Where I come from, older is better. We run Baldwins where I work and these old switchers prove themselves very well.
She was built by EMD in 1956. However, got completely rebuilt at Knoxville Locomotive Works in, Im thinking it was 2005. We bought it in 2008, and she just recently got repainted.
Amazing how most of the comments are about that. But, it is so true. People are so impatient that they wont wait for anything. That's how a lot of car crashes happen. People are impatient and run red lights or try to go around people, OR RUN RAILROAD CROSSINGS!!

I just rode behind the 915 on Saturday. I wish the crew / brochure would have had some info about the locomotives / rail cars. There was plenty of info about the line, but nothing, zero, zilch about the train equipment.
It was a nice ride and my son and I enjoyed the trip with the excellent on-board narration. It was just odd that we didn't see any more rail equipment as most tourist lines have their equipment where you ride the train.

1. We never actually saw it rerail. Would be nice to see what they did.
Cause of the derail?
2. I meant to video crossings from the engine. Yes, you may not be able to drive to all the crossings in time.
3. At 13:15 the crossing signals have red crossing gate(?) lights on top.
4. Sometimes the wheels do not electrically short circuit the track enough to cause the signals to operate. This can happen when just a few wheels or if the railhead is rusty.
You know, if I had been the engineer, I would have been REALLY tempted to stop back up, and go forward again just to be a jerk the people in the car decided to be jackoffs and yell.

Have seen plenty of engines and cars just rolling down a track.
Was neat seeing other unusual things, like those red lights.
And those two crossings which did not activate until right at it.
A pair of box cars started rolling on rusty rails and failed to cause the crossing signals to operate. Tragically killed the wife in their car.
When I was in Amtrak locomotives I videoed all of the grade crossings to show driver behavior and capture if anything happened.
Oh, you'd be surprised. 90% of my co-workers are also train buffs. In fact, probably half of them are steam fans, and maybe a quarter of them have played with steam in the past. Most are ex New Hope guys.

At 4:04, were those people in the car actually yelling at the crew for going too slow through the crossing? Wow, some people really do not have patience....
1.) I did show some of the rerailing process. The video from in the cab of the engineer was when the car was actually put back on.
2.) It wasn't possible to make all grade crossings, the chase route isn't designed to be able to make them all.

What class SW900 915 lacks in size more than makes up for it's presence via it's horn, engine sound as you know when it's a coming, the white paint scheme is more than fitting to it as it has a ghost-like appearance when it rumbles down the track etc...We must never ever let the old engines die out, it is our responsibility & duty as rail enthusiasts to make sure they keep on surviving..915 will outlive the old bag of a women who yelled at it,disrespectful....
You've got to remember, this was a completely unscheduled event. wwrr98 just happened to be at the railroad when the call came in. If I had known what happened, I would have caught it myself.
Actually, no. You would have to be more specific by what you mean by "these trains". This particular locomotive runs regular tourist trains on the Wilmington & Western Railroad. The East Penn just called us for assistance because the only things CSX had to offer was way too big for the line.
Now if by these trains you mean switcher locomotives, they have phased out of Class 1 railroad use for more powerful locos. They're mainly seen on short lines now.

Does a single switch engine ever not sufficently shunt the grade crossing circuit and not operate the (o)T(o)?

Normally, anything can shunt the circuit. I've done it with a speeder that isn't insulated.
But as far as all of your questions, I think you overlooked the purpose of the video. It was so see our motive power on a different line. I wasn't going after anything related to safety. Point blank, its just another railfanning video. And there can't be a camera on every train to record if something should happen at a grade crossing.
