Well, maybe the word "resent" is rather extreme and seems bitter/harsh too. 🤔 Nevertheless, the "ageing process" can be really challenging and filled with dilemmas and frustrations though...particularly for women🙄

@@jennyyip8456 I'm a nearly age 60 kidney cancer survivor. So, every day is a blessing to me. I've lost 3 friends from high school already, and this quote means a lot to me. I know aging is a challenge. Very much so. But we have to keep a grateful attitude that we are lucky enough to be alive.

I'm going to be 71 in August. Cancer took my left kidney and my right kidney is functioning at 23%. I'm isolated, no problem being with no friends. I find it hard to leave my house and keep up with cleaning. Sadly, no life purpose since my sweet kitty at almost 20 died in May...her loss was/is very hard. What I find that helps me is to live with gratitude. Reach out to others with kindness when in grocery stores or anywhere in public. Leave nice and supportive comments with video posts. You are slim. Pretty, and intelligent. Media has made women feel like our life is over if we don’t “look” like the perfect airbrushed pictures presented to us as what we should be!
I was a workhorse…I birthed 9. Babies and cared for them in below poverty conditions. I got my nursing license at age 50 while I was on welfare with 6 of my younger kids. Nursing is hard on the body. After retiring I cared for my elderly sister as she passed of cancer. Then COVID 19 hit. I was depressed and sat at home for a year. Then I got an auto-immune disease so I’m in constant pain and cannot move anywhere near what I used to. Treatment has not helped. I push myself to work, cook, clean, and try to feel thankful I’m able to do what I do.

I was told my whole life i was pretty. I put to much importance on that. It was something i could feel good about. Now that I'm older and aging i realized i had to let go of the younger version of me and be at peace with my older self and what that looks like. I'll admit i don't find it easy. There are some things we can change and some things we can't. We have to accept that and do the best we can at the stage of life we are in. Maybe thats what it means to grow old gracefully.

    • @TheLifeTidy
      @TheLifeTidy  Před měsícem +40

@denisekarding1844 I was going to talk about that in this video and then forgot. 😥 I feel like that may be an even more difficult adjustment for people who did feel beautiful during their youth and middle age... Because you are grieving the loss of something that you had and now see going away... So then it becomes about seeing the beauty that you uniquely possess in a different way. And we are our own worst critics! I imagine you are still beautiful! My mom, who is 79, has the same struggle. And she is still beautiful.... She just doesn't think she is because her beauty looks different than it did when she was younger. 🤍🤍🤍

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Until very recently, I never gave one thought to aging. For the reasons you state here AND for the "station" in life we have entered which I call the "periphery". One clear example is going to a birthday party or a wedding. We seniors are no longer included in the "action". I've always enjoyed being an outgoing and vivacious person at celebrations. I am noticing that the expectation is that I maintain a more reserved position to the side. At first, I thought it was me being paranoid, so I began monitoring it and found my thoughts were true. I am dealing with it now that I realize it, but I miss my former life.
Also.....I get so sad when I realize the artists of our age are dying. Sometimes I can't listen to my favorite music or watch classic movies that used to bring me such joy because an artist has died. I don't worry about dying myself just yet, but our mortality IS looking closer.
I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts. I HAVE recognized that being in communication with others dealing with aging issues is very helpful.

    • @TheLifeTidy
      @TheLifeTidy  Před měsícem +8

I think previous generations didn't struggle with this as much. Because they couldn't still see the people they had lost in movies or even in pictures. I mean, it's a blessing, but it is also a saddening reminder of all of our mortality. I find that my faith in God and hope for immortality after this life gives me a lot of hope and peace in that regard. I tend to look at the stepping back that happens at events as passing the baton onto the next generation... And I usually find that they don't mind or reject some help when offered... as long as I don't insist that they have to do it the way I always did it. 🙃😊

Wish I was 59, that was a long time ago for me. I would hardly consider being 59 as being old. My challenge is losing weight, which I can do when I fast. Keeping a clean and tidy house and garden seems to be more of a challenge, but more from a mental than physcial perspective. The benefits of doing a Swedish Death Clean have not escaped me as I need to work on my decluttering. Problem is, the 'clutter' is mostly comprised of items of value gathered over a lifetime. As a prepper, I have art, photo, sewing, and Family History supplies, and need to spend time on the hobbies I had planned for my retirement. Moving more, sticking to my plant-based whole food diet, and improving my self care and dressing are all goals. After cancer, I decided to reinvent my life, to live more in keeping with my values. I have no fear of cancer recurrence after a session or two with a wonderful Psychologist. I allowed myself the luxury of Boom Cosmetics, because they are all natural and don't contain toxins. I like the idea of regularly refining my life to live with purpose and be the best version of myself. Slowing down and not socializing for the sake of it, works for me, I decided to engage more, in short nuggets of interaction, the kind that happen in waiting areas. The older I become I have less and less desire to be around others, and more desire to focus on my own goals. We are all different, but that is what works for me. When it comes to clothing, I love a YT website, Marie-Anne teaches French chic dressing and lifestyle, simple but classy. I love it!

After hearing so many stories about nursing and how hard it is, I'm really glad I didn't spend the money to do that. I just worked in a nursing home caring for elderly with Alzheimer's. I was severely under paid working for a greedy man. I left my money in investments, which did quite well. Then at 50 years old, I bought my own home with no mortgage. My house had a lot going for it, but needed some care. I worked really hard, myself, fixing things. It is so awesome and I love it. The point is, at the age of 50, you don't want to spend on doing something that is taxing on your body. Work towards retirement peacefully. That is what I have now. I retired at 56, now 74. Of course I'm not married. Be careful ladies. One gets old before you know it. Be good to you.

My mom is 96 and out of 4 other siblings, my youngest sister and I look after her and have gotten close. I know down the road I will be alone. I have cats and dogs that keep me loved. But I know when I get older, I won’t have as many. What ever the lord sends me. Connect to nature as nature is God. Much love♥️

Thank you for posting this message. It has been so very helpful to read about other peoples' experiences. I am 72 and have been blessed with good health until 3 yrs ago. Since then it has been an enormous challenge. It is a constant battle to stop comparing myself to my lifelong girlfriends who are still vital, extremely active and full of energy. Their lives have not yet changed much while my world gets smaller and smaller. I will not allow myself to be that person who moans and groans about their situation, but when im alone with my thoughts, i feel sad to observe how limited ive become in what i am abke to do. Lately ive been falling and im bewildered when it happens - for no apparent reason. I do know that i have much to be grateful for, but i have a new understanding of that old saying "getting old is not for the feint of heart". Blessings to you❤❤❤

I am sorry for the loss of your friend. Such experiences seem to happen more frequenty as we age. But, you are still a relatively young person, compared to those in their eighties and nineties. Animals are such wonderful companions and make our homes feel like home. My neighbour had vision issues, and joined a group in town that supported both blind people and those with low vision. She went on many trips and picnics with them as well as other activities. It provided companionship for her through other members and volunteers, and they also offered ways to obtain devices to help people cope better with everyday challenges caused by vision loss. She was driven to meetings by voluneers, because she had long since given up driving, but she always said she loved her life, whenever I drove her home. She liked to go out to breakfast, or lunch at a local buffet. In fact, she had a better social life than most teenagers, I kid you not! Her calendar was always full. As a young woman she was a Major in the Canadian Army, so could be a tad demanding. One night around 2am, she phoned to tell me there were crickets in her house. After going to check, I determined that the said 'crickets' was a smoke detector needing to have its battery changed. But, she was convinced the crickets were all over her house, everywhere!

My right eye is wonky and I can be so self conscious of it. My 69 year old sister and I were talking recently about how we worry so much about that spare tire we got with menopause and how we can feel like everyone is judging us a obese and lazy, when in reality we don’t look that bad (thankfully we are tall so we can carry a little extra and hide it😅). Thank you for your insights.

Lovely video, thank you ! I have very similar neck related issues to you, migraines, dizziness, pain and nausea - and when I look back I can remember being given advice on addressing my poor posture from kind ladies who must have been my age now. I also remember being offered good advice on taking better care of my eyesight and hearing too. None of these well intentioned ( and as it turned out eminently wise ) cautionary tales and advices had much impact at the time, as I merrily crouched and slouched and threw myself about like a rag doll until I was at least 50. I lifted heavy weights indiscriminately without a care, and also assaulted my eyes and ears with all manor of consistently intense strain. I feel a bit silly about it all now, but I guess that’s how life goes .. by the time you realise you actually are going to age, and by the way it won’t take half as long as you imagined it would , the damage is done! On the plus side, I’ve never been happier in my own skin, and never more confident with having the body I’ve grown to respect - ( however wrinkly and creaky it all is), it’s mine and it’s got me this far, I’m full of gratitude for it. Thank you for reminding us that it’s never too little too late to work with what we have and make significant improvements for the now and for our future selves.
You mentioned that in your young days you felt ( or were made to feel ) like a ‘freak of nature’ , and I think we all feel like that one way or another. On a biological level, we really all are freaks of nature - if we weren’t we’d all be the same . So for me, the good bit comes when you’ve learnt to embrace all your uniqueness and freakiness and no longer wish it wasn’t so. No amount of being young and bendy and even beautiful can beat that feeling 🌎

Being too heavy is a struggle for many of us, especailly as we get older. I decided to fast, and make friends with my electric bicycle. Instead of thinking about weight, I think about becoming fitter and building muscle. I love cycling but with an unstable INR, bumping one's head on the tarmac, is a serious consideration.
Dealing with the issues of family members, and ulitmately their deaths, can take a huge toll on our energy and well being.
After serious illness or injury, makes being grateful a given. I have learned to be kinder to myself. The day after a particulary tiring event, I often have a Quiet Day. Though enthusiastic to write my 'To Do' lists, I also don't worry if I do not complete any list all on the same day. I do what is most important first, especially if it is not the most pleasant, the rest goes to the next day, and so on.
Accepting limitations, and replacing such activities with ones that serve one better seems to work. A lot of it has to do with knowning oneself, exploring options, and making a conscious effort to live a well-balanced life. Quality is always better than quantity, so I nolonger socialize just, because. I do it on my terms, and when I feel like it. If I don't want to, that is OK too! Getting older, just as any other season of our lives, comes with both positives and negatives. And, beats the other alternative!
I've decided to slow down a tad, and not take on tasks that do not enhance my well-being, or cause a financial burden. Being a little spontanious sometimes brings joy. If I feel like a new hair style occasionally, I can always go to the Beauty School and stay within my budget. Being selective about who I spend my time with, is a biggy. I gave up on the Senior Center, because it was not my cup of tea. And, I didn't enjoy it particularly and found other activities more rewarding. I make it a point to experiment and discover what works, and what doesn't. I make it a habit to review and refine how I spend my time. The older we become, the less time there is to waste. That said, there is nothing wrong with doing absolutely nothing once in a while, and not feeling guilty about it. A good question to ask is, " What would I like to do today? What would bring me joy? And, do it!

Hi Catherine, love your idea about separate bins for different sizes. It's also perfectly normal, between the cold and the decreased sunlight, to put on a few lbs in the winter months (if one lives far enough north to experience it). I've always been this way, as are most people, with no apologies. As for women who remain fixated on their looks well into their senior years, I think that's pretty pathetic. Nothing wrong with wanting to look one's best, but hey, once one is no longer "a creature of reproduction" it's time to shift focus to all that one has to offer after a lifetime of experience, not cling pathetically to a time long past -- which is evident to everyone! Really enjoyed your video.

I've been disappointed in many blogs & vlogs about ageing before this, and was hesitant to click into this one, afraid I'd be disappointed once again. Thank you for your honesty. It was a very refreshing & uplifting video. Much, much needed. Like you, I've never really cared about my looks, but I did take my strength for granted. It's the hardest thing for me to come to terms with. I'm still strong for my age (61), but I am not as strong as I use to be. For me, that's the most annoying thing. I love how you say it like it is, without the fake stuff you see on YT now days. BTW...my mom was albino, and legally blind as well. You look beautiful to me. Wish I still had her with me.

I'm 69 and have never dyed my hair and I quit wearing makeup decades ago. My glasses are my eye make up. I look fine and it doesn't take me an hour to get ready! Hubby loves that. I'm assuming you are using moisturizer designed for the special needs of albino skin. If not, please look in to that. The only thing I do sometimes is use a tinted lip moisturizer because I hate the feel lipstick. I'm fine with how aging is affecting me except for one thing...increasing bladder leaks. That has had the most negative impact on my quality of life. No one ever mentions that even though so many of us have that issue. I work around it, but I wish it wasn't a consideration. Thanks for your video and best of luck to you. You look fine!

Thank you! I always enjoy your videos. I'm of the opinion that as we age, "less is more" as far as makeup goes. I'm pushing 64 right now and have since my 50's worn the bare minimum. Just foundation as my skin was sun damaged from my youth and just needs a bit of evening out. Concealer under the eyes to bring them out and cover dark circles. And the final, waa laa! I curl my eyelashes as I've refused to wear mascara most of my life, my lashes are dark black, were very thick and long most of my life. Now they are thinning a bit, but not from putting goop on them that made them look fake in my youth. Oh, and some form of clear gloss or chapstick. This on top of the lotions and potions with sunscreen and such to take the best care that I can of my skin.
If it makes you feel any better sweet Christian sister, I can imagine you shinning so brightly in that great multitude which no man can number in Heaven for all of eternity. We will all be looking the best of the best that we ever have and then some forever. This time we have in this flesh is just a moment, an instant, a breath, compared to forever, eternity, infinity life, in the Kingdom of Heaven.
So for me, I'm just not gonna worry about it. I want to feel well, take care of myself and stay active as long as I can. Today is the youngest I will ever be during my trip on this planet and that's OK. Tomorrow I will be one day older and so forth. No matter how many more days or months or years I have, I want to serve Jesus with everyone of them.
May God bless you sweet sister and know that you are loved. I think you're beautiful inside and out.

I’m sure it’s very common especially for women to feel all the emotions of aging. I turned 61 this year and honestly was ok emotionally until I turned 60. I’m sure a lot had to do with the fact that I lost my dad when he was 61.😢 It really has had a huge effect on me. I realized how much he missed and more so how much time do I have left?😫 I’ve had health issues for the majority of my life so that doesn’t help. I feel I’ve missed out on a lot. I don’t feel well daily so how can I feel better as I age? Most of my fears are health related versus how I look. I don’t mind wrinkles and some sagginess but my hair is thinning and that is a big concern. Stress doesn’t help but if you don’t feel well it’s hard to avoid it. To age is a blessing and I do feel incredibly fortunate to be here especially as I was very ill in my early adulthood. I just have to keep telling myself to enjoy what I can now and not to worry about what is to come. Thank you Katherine for this video and letting us express our feelings. God bless you.❤️🙏

The reality is that none of us ever know how much time we have left no matter how old we are, but somehow, we don't feel that when we are young. It becomes a very prevalent feeling as we get older.. I try to use that knowledge to motivate me to make the most of every day even if I am not feeling well. It is definitely a challenge! I always remind myself that if God was done with me here on this planet, He would take me Home. As long as I'm still here I figure I have something to do and to contribute to the lives of those around me. Hmmm... Should have put that thought in this video somewhere! Thank you for inspiring me!

I recently turned 69 and see my doctor for bloodwork/labs annually. Thankfully, I am still not on any medications although there was one time, about four years ago my doctor wanted to put me on some kind of cholesterol lowering med....I told her, give me three months and lets do my labs again. Over those next three months I tweaked my diet and voila! My cholesterol dropped about 20 points, back into what was acceptable to my doctor. I also have a morning routine that involves 20-minutes of therapy/Yoga exercises then treadmill for 15 minutes at maximum incline. In my mind that morning routine is "non-negotiable" because to me it is overwhelmingly beneficial in maintaining proper balance, flexibility, strength and overall good health. I admire your tenacity and positive attitude even though you've had to overcome adversity. Cheers!

Live your life authentically. There is great peace in that. If you have lost your way, help someone else, this will give you enough perspective to find it again. I wear very minimal make-up now because it's harder to apply to an aging face. I have noticed a lot of changes to the skin on my face. It was bothering me initially but then I figured people are more interested in a person who is friendly and smiles. They don't care about my sagging soon to be drool lines. haha Great video. At 75 the back strain from reading close-up forever is truly a challenge. Doing as much exercise to straighten the back as possible is truly necessary. I begin each day in pain, but I move move move move. Walk, sit in a chair and March sit in a chair and, move your elbows to your knees, etc. you’ve got it. Most of all try not to feel sorry for yourself because you’re different. Very different is just another way of saying you are unique. I beautiful creation.

You are a very relevant person on this topic. How cool it is to share this for people floundering. This is what happens when people have developed character. Give me better character than be a worry wart about the age spot….there is this one that really bothers me on my hand….i hve many but this ONE just sticks out.
I went thru a stage when I went on a rant to my peers at senior meals how wrong it is that aging people usually shut up about it and say very little and keep a smile on their faces when I now know it’s awful, frustrating, depressing painful and foreign it is loosing mobility and being able to do things etc…. And how when you try to do some of the things they suggest to get back to normal they barely work….yes help…but sometimes cause a worse problem due to doing it “not exactly right”. Now I just walk. I do a little bit of stretching because yes….most else hurts. I say I am grateful to be able to walk. I’m not super limited….but it feels like I’m headed that way. Yes it is about keeping your independance.

It seems to happen overnight - the crepey skin and chin that falls down. Doesn't seem to be too much to do about those things. Otherwise, holding my own in my mid-sixties. Regular maintenance helps - haircuts and color, nails (manicure and pedicure), classic but comfortable clothes, minimal make up. I worked out pretty regularly in my twenties, thirties, forties and into fifties - so I'm not as out of shape as some people are. Everything else is fine as is.

Thank you, Catherine, for your honesty and vulnerability. I am 2 months younger than you and am looking forward to turning 60. I think that the most profound thing for me that you said in this video is the comment that 'your looks are the least interesting thing about you'. I love it, and I like to think that it is true about me as well! I have been eating low carb for years to manage my blood sugar levels and exercise 3 or 4 times a week. I stopped dyeing my hair 16 years ago and love getting compliments on my silver hair. I like to find flattering clothes in thrift or consignment stores and now wear minimal makeup and even go out without any makeup on occasion. I am focusing more on my inner and spiritual self and am learning how to set healthy boundaries (book by that title by Cloud & Townsend) and Bible study by Peter Scazzero entitled Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. Being friendly, cheerful, authentic, and encouraging to others is more important to me about how people think of me than just my wrinkles and other signs of aging. I want to set an example to younger women about how to age well, if you are fortunate enough to get the opportunity to do it! 🤗
