It’s actually genius how they took the absolute trash tier, bottom of the barrel comic relief villains and gave them real depth and growth till they became characters we care about as well as fan favourites
To be fair they had to change how his powers were in the comics to make him cool but nobody really knows the character that well to care. It was good twist though, being an inter-dimensional virus.

I feel like we've reached a point in live action comic book adaptations where no character is too weird or "comic book-y" to work. This movie took an obscure Batman villain who was an absolute joke even by Silver-Age standards and made him into an amazingly deep and sympathetic character, and even turned his gimmick into a pretty awesome power.
In the original script they planned to kill Ratcatcher instead, but they felt that her story needed more, and Polka Dot Man had completed his story, so they killed him off instead.

There's little detail that no one noticed but when you look closely, you'll notice the circles under his eyes. Which is the reason why often he wakes up to puke and having trouble with sleeping every night after it.
This right here is why the suicide squad is such a Wonderful concept narratively speaking Take a bunch of c list villains and put the world on their shoulders and you give them a real chance to shine

I love the character work in the suicide squad I think the biggest problem in the movie is that sometimes james gunn has to much freedom and he just can't keep himself from putting a joke where it doesn't belong like the "where is your mom now?" it would've been such a better scene if it didn't cut to a joke showing exactly how sinister of a mark she left on him. in the end his character was very serious but to often he was played for a laughs and it made his death a lot weaker in comparison (also him dying was a very big cop out because realistically he is the only one capable of damaging starro). If I directed the movie I would've made him run and be scared of starro and at the end of the fight with ratcachter making starro ocuppied bloodsport would tell him that starro was his mom and make him finish the fight
