Christians often look like the surrounding culture because culture has a powerful influence on the shepherds (leadership), who try to conform to cultural norms in order to be more appealing. This problem is more systemic, related to the organization, rather than individual followers. It's not productive to blame this on individual followers, especially when promoting the virtue of obedience.
