Lyrics:
Oh no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery
Save him, take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree
I hear the steel drums sing their song
They’re singin’ “man you know you got it wrong.”
I hear the voice of the yellow bird
Singin’ in the tree “this is quite absurd.”
Oh yes,
It’s true
Benjamin is straighter than the big bamboo.
No “if”s,
No “but”s
Benjamin is honest as coconuts
Sure as the tide wash the golden sand,
Benjamin is an innocent man
Sure as bananas need the sun,
We are the criminal guilty ones.
Oh no,
Not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery.
Save him,
Take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree.
Oh no,
Not he
How you can accuse him
Is a mystery
Save him,
Take me
Benjamin is straighter
Than the tall palm tree
Sure as the tide wash the golden sand,
Benjamin is an innocent man
Sure as bananas need the sun,
We are the criminal guilty ones
Oh no,
Not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery
Save him,
Take me
Benjamin is straighter than the tall palm tree.
Oh no,
Not he
How you can accuse him
Is a mystery
Save him,
Take me
Benjamin is straighter
Than the tall palm tree

In the summer of 1967, Andrew Lloyd Webber was asked by Alan Doggett, head of the Music Department at Colet court, St Paul’s Junior School who taught his younger brother, Julian, to write a ‘pop cantata’ for the school choir to sing at their Easter end of term concert.
Andrew immediately approached his friend Tim Rice to ask if he would write lyrics for the project. After toying with ideas about spies, 007′s and the like, Tim suggested the story of Joseph.
The first performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was on a cold winter afternoon on 1st March 1968 at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith.
Accompanied by the School orchestra and conducted by Alan Doggett, the performance was only 15 minutes long.
It was such a success that a second performance was arranged on 12th May 1968 at Central Hall, Westminster, where Andrew’s father was the organist. Julian Lloyd Webber gave a classical recital in the first half, along with Bill Lloyd Webber. The audience of approximately 2,500 consisted mainly of parents of the Colet Court boys. To Andrew and Tim’s surprise, Derek Jewell, Jazz and Pop Critic for The Sunday Times, saw the show and wrote a favourable review of Joseph, which appeared on 19th May 1968. A third performance took place on 9th November 1968 at St Paul’s Cathedral, where Joseph was expanded to include songs such as ‘Potiphar’ for the first time.

It always kills me that Judah sings “We are the criminal GUILTY ONES” as if they’re all gonna sit Joseph down and be like “Yeah, no seriously man, the cup is nothing compared to the time we freakin’ tried to MURDER our baby brother,“
What confused me was wasn’t Benjamin there when they tried to kill him/ sold him earlier? Sooo not really so honest lol
@@Jessica-ch1yi Well, according to the timeline of the Bible, Benjamin was a toddler around that time when he was sold...That is probably why Joseph would have wanted to see Benjamin in the first place. He had not seen him since he was a toddler.
Seriously bro. Juda just only clum down joseph
Joseph was the 1st son of his favorite wife, the one he initially was promised. Benjamin was the only other son from her so it would have destroyed Jacob if Benjamin had been hurt. The brothers felt guilty by that time for what they had done to Joseph. They were all sons of Leah's or the maidservants
😂😂😂
I love how Joseph's being all serious when he smashes the cup down in front of Benjamin. Then the brothers break out a in a jaunty Caribbean tune. Joseph's reaction! haha
Like "aw crap their singing"
"How many damn styles are these boys gonna use."
That slap on the knee reaction gets me
I'll be playing Judah in my school's musical (We're doing this one)
@cart172 Actually, it was Calypso-style music :)
Cheerfully singing "We are the criminal guilty ones" 😂😂
Jacy I always found it weird they sound so happy, like if it weren’t Joseph then they’d all be screwed lol
Jacy lol 😂
Makes me smile every time when Joseph is trying not to laugh!! 😃
It because He knew they were his brothers and they dint know it was Joseph
That true you can see it 😀😊
These type of scenes are always the hardest special if U havnt had time to practice it alot or If they start to just improv
Yes, I saw that as well.
Hannah Bubeer I never noticed this until now! That’s a great detail 😄
When the narrator appears with a cocktail and sunnies 😂😂😂
That's cute.
Me when my mum leaves the house to put something in the garage
Martini and saken not sterd and sunnies
And also offers it to Joseph, who politely refuses.
Inr😂
1:10 Haha, oh man. The guy who plays Judah is freaking great.
I agree, he's a riot!
gabe rodriuez what?
He is bloody crazy but amazing
He’s amazing
In Genesis, Judah pled for Benjamin's life.
The Jamaican theme plus the actor that plays Judah never fails to make me laugh and grin because it’s so perfect and priceless!
When listening to the three revival cast recordings, he was easily the most vocally animated. Using him for the film version was a no brainer.
The fact that Joseph can barely keep in a smile makes it so much better
I think he is switching between turning away to weep and laughing out 😂😂😂
0:27 Joseph's face is just like "Oh God do they actually need to sing now" xD
He's like "Just tell me all this."
And God's response, "Yes."
haha i never noticed that before XD
And he slaps his knee just makes it x5 better lol
I am glad someone else caught that Donny can't keep a straight face! Judah's faces are hilarious
Benjamin is an INNOCENT MAN! 🙀OH!
Best part 🤣
JOSEPH was a school project for Andrew Lloyd Webber while he was in University. Of course, it has grown through the years, but to think that this was the work of a (very talented!) student is remarkable! Donny Osmond was a fantastic Joseph. The run was originally supposed to be 6 months, but then turned into 6 YEARS!
What do you mean 6 years? It was done with several Josephs, Lee Mead, Donny and Jason Donovan
@@EmmelineSama you forgot the silver fox Phillip Schofield
@@ellenthorne8222 yes. However, I didn't find out and watched it, when I replied here, 3 months ago. But I saw it soon after.
@@EmmelineSama I'm guessing Songbird meant that Donny Osmonds run was only meant to be six months, but lasted for six years. On the DVD, there's a clip of him saying that.
I love when he hits his knee like 'ah s*** they are singing'
Joespeh in that moment is me any time I sing Go Go Joespeh to my brother.
I actually love that he was just hoping he could get away with it 😂
anime_girl_ 34 I’ve got to applaude you for that 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love Benjamin's mascara.
Hellbound Iscariot *eyeliner
@@hannahbertram7558 there's other ways of saying it that's British
Which part is he?
Im a potatoe no it’s not, in Britain mascara is the thing you put on eyelashes...
Yea i'm a sucker for the Egyptian do
1:07 still kills me everytime xD
Filming this clip must've been the best thing ever
"an INNOCENT MAN!" oh wait no i just yelled at the person saving us from starvation uh "oooooh!"
2:25 Joseph's just like "Eh, what the heck? Why not?"
Nick C yeah
This entire scene is donny trying not to laugh and look like serious pharoh lol
If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
Selena McMahan I’m pretty sure from 1:26 onwards he cracks a few times but I’m not sure if that’s intentional still
@@erronhammesvar5168 no its not intentional you can see it in his face
I love it when actors try not to laugh. It makes the performance more real.
I love it when Joseph is trying not to laugh in this, Donny Osmond is so good in this xx 😘
Enby Alex yeah I agree because from 1:26 onwards he smiles a few times and tries to hide it again. To be fair, who wouldn’t laugh while recording this chaos at least once
This show is full of great songs, but this is my favorite! The eye contact between Benjamin and Joseph starting at 2:39 always gives me goosebumps.
Maria Friedman sat on the side with a cocktail, wearing shades and vibing is a whole other level of cool that I aspire to be
Im convinced that Judah made it his mission to get Donny to break character and laugh
2:23 Im still wondering. Was that Joseph breaking character, or Donny breaking chracter.
Yes
Donny is a time traveler and was in fact joseph and made that same expression. In fact this is exactly how it happened. A Jamaican sang it joseph, as well as an Elvis impersonator and Texan, and this is a documentary.
This is the most out-of-left-field song in the show and that's saying something in a show with a country ballad, an Elvis-style rockabilly tune, and a synthy 80s techno song
I love the way that Donny is struggling to keep a straight face! My senior year of high school I played Dracula in a community theater. Closing night everything seemed to go wrong, and the other actors started responding by ad-libbing funny lines in response. As Dracula I had to struggle to keep a straight face through all the goofiness until about three-fourths of the way when I got to laugh in derision. :-D
Hahaha amazing!
Struggling to keep a straight face is the ROLE. He's supposed to look thar way, since he knows the truth.
2:01 I swear he says Benjamin is an innocent banana
Look Max, I have a show in 3 days. Now is not the time to get, "Benjamin is an innocent banana." stuck in my head. 😂
I thought it said Benjamin is an innocent tomato
@@irenelee6285 How did you get "tomato" out of that? 😂
I thought it said an innocent mother
Why
i love how donny is trying not to laugh the entire time
1:36 is the best part
YES
YESSSSS
I also love Donnys little slow walk up to Benjamin, gets down on his knees and then slams the cup in front of him. I love his acting 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
ikr he's so awesome :D
2:07 I just love the way he says the word "Guilty"
The fact that Judah isn’t a big part but this guy somehow managed to steal the whole show is just so crazy, this guy has so much talent!!
He definitely was a highlight in this number, but I think that Pharaoh Elvis stole the show.
@@user-rh2io7gm1l tbh I found the guy a tad creepy but his voice was amazing and he does have charisma, I’m playing pharoah myself soon so I do have a lot of tips lol but Judah went so hard
This is definitely my favorite song behind Song of the King and Close Every Door
Batfreeze I
Batfreeze iiiiiisamwe
yes!!
A pharaoh story for the win
Batfreeze ehh I like close every door better...........no hate
2:16 Judah it's the leg kick for me
But why is Benjamin lowkey a snacc
Mood
I love this song i was thrilled to have this party in my school play although i did have to do funny dances and embarrass myself but it was worth it
I think all these comments about Donny trying not to laugh aren’t understanding the scene….Joseph is playing a trick on his brothers so for the audience sake he’s trying not to laugh
I just love it how in 1:37 they are having this stare contest 😂😂
The narrator is the best character in this whole thing
I played the narrator in school when I was nine
this movie really likes songs of different genres
I watched this all the time as a child 💚 didn't realise how fit Benjamin was 😂
Judah is so camp in this and I’m just stanning the portrayal
That long note at 2:41 ....beautiful
In the Dutch version the singer sings the part of "aweeeee, aweeya wambo waaaay" from 'The lion sleeps tonight'
But he sings it like "awweeeeeee, aweeheehee aweeya benjamiiiin"
@@etoinedevries7583 omg that’s amazing lol
Never noticed that 😮
Love this number. My oldest son had the entire show memorized at age 5. He is now almost 25 and sings. He still sings songs from this show.
My son is called Benjamin strangely he is far from as straight as the big bamboo or straighter than the tall palm. Love listening to it with Benjamin and laughing
LMFAO
Joesph is legit me , I would be trying not to laugh too
This always makes me laugh. Judah got it going on with this Jamaican theme music 😂😂😂
I can’t see anyone else play Joseph. Donny Osmond really deserves that role
One of my favourite songs, brings smile to my face, watching Donny stop himself from laughing.
Saw this amazing musical in Chicago with Donny
I just love all the added humor
The narrator walking around with a tropical drink in her hand is too funny
Joseph is trying hard to keep a straight face through a lot of it. Nearly lost the battle when Benjamin imitates a tree. Lol
BEST.SONG.EVER.EVER!
I got to play Judah once. I had a lot of fun singing this song!
Oh, no, not he
How you can accuse him is a mystery?

They're singing man you know you've got it wrong

Joseph makes smile so much. Lol
Frick
I love how for most of this song Benjamin is lying on the floor in front of them
I've been to many a Joseph show through the years (even the one where 'future Joseph' Lee Mead played as Pharaoh during nationals), but this song and version still remains a banger.
Nick Holmes is as iconic to the role of Judah through this number as most roles throughout musical history. Such a great performance.
Nick Holmes played Benjamin, but your point still stands
Honestly, I kind of expected Benjamin to protest. I mean, if he's so kind, he wouldn't let his brothers just take all of the blame. But he was actually like, "You believe them, right? I'm innocent. You believe them, right?" lol
But he didn’t steal the cup.
Lol. Have you met his brothers? They kinda suck lol
Try not to smile or laugh during this song is impossible
Dragonscale Audio I’m wondering how many times they had to redo parts of the recording because of them laughing now lol
Donny reaction is just brilliant in this i love you Donny
2:03 😂😂 always makes me laugh
Benjamin may be straight as a tall palm tree but Judah certainly is not
😂
Not necessarily he might be bi. But I certainly see you’re point
Reminded this vhs too much. So, thanks CZcams ❤
This entire play is pretty much my spotify on shuffle play start with some country throw some pop and end with some reggae
We are doing a school play of Joseph and my first ever solo is this, this song has helped me soo much through my auditions thank you!!😁
jakub t good luck for your solo I hope everything goes well. I performed for the first time yesterday and it was great, we got a standing ovation at the end of the show.
2:19 😂 I can’t omg
Juda is so funny the yellow Bird 😂😂😂😂😂😂 his moves 😂😂😂 he tipi tose natiii Save him tacke meee!!!!!😂😂😂😂 LOVE IT❤
Omg 😱 I was in this as a kid...the goldbergs took me back “gogogogo Joseph you know what they say gogogogo Joseph will make it some day...shalalala Joseph u feeling fine u and dream coat ahead of your time” part of our ending song when Joseph dances with his beautiful technicolor dream coat. Our choir truly was amazing we won to be 1 of the 4 choirs to alternate nights to do the play out of 54 choirs and were from the Bronx 🙏best experience ever❤️close every door to me was my favorite song!!!
It’s all about Joseph trying not to laugh.
joseph's reaction is sending me
Drop dead gorgeous as always and even when wearing a loin cloth with gold sequins! LOVE Donny
Judah’s final “take me” is so seductive
Best song hands down
We are doing this play in a week and I play Judah.... I LOVE THIS MAN!
I LOVE ALL YOUR SONGS!
ESPECIALLY ONE MORE ANGEL IN HEVEN
Donny Osmond did a pretty good job not smiling because I would have lost it at the voice cracks 😂
At 2:13 Donny vehemently refuses the drink; is this a nod to his mormonism?
I'd think so
Secret Forreddit actually it was because the producers feared that there was to much controversy (mainly the fact that Joseph’s brothers were smoking during the song “Caan Days” in front of children) so to make up for it they had Joseph politely refused the alcoholic drink
@@moviemelody2210 Really? That's interesting! Makes perfect sense, really. Thank you for that pice of knowledge!
Secret Forreddit you’re welcome. If you want to double check me of course, I got this information by typing in (the movie title then trivia after it)
This performance saved Donny's career for sure. Go Donny go!
Judah is putting a smile on my face he is funny and selfless
2:37
Benjamin: Great! Guess Judah saved me and I'm fine l
Joseph:What the fuck did you say you little shit?
Fav song 💖💖💖
I am from India and back in fourth standard, there was our class teacher, Br.Elton who used to carry a guitar into the class and sing this song... we sang along... if you touch me right now I might dissolve into molecules...
Judah guy is very talented🔥🔥
"each of the brothers fell to his knees!!!!! show him some mercy oh mighty one please!!!! he would not do this he must have been framed!!!! jail us and beat us!!! we should be blamed!!"
2:19 favourite moment to freeze frame
Every time I watch this and I see Joseph try not to smile I have to pinch myself to make myself not laugh but you can’t help it have a laugh
I was in this musical during my freshman year in high school and this was my favorite song of the musical
this is so good! it helps me with my chorus music since we're doing this song!
This is my favorite part! :)
Go Donny go....... you're great!
That reggae beat I love it!
I beat it was the partial inspiration for In the Heights
im about to play benjamin in a community production of this show. im really excited
best song ever
this song is too happy for a moment like this
Been watching this to get the feel of the play, since I am playing Benjamin in a production
LukeTheDog1015 I'm issichar
we're doing a play aswel
LTD1015 and KC345 I auditioned today, getting roles tomorrow.
Cool, I just closed on Sunday. Its such a fun show to do.
LTD1015 and KC345 It looks really fun. The songs and dances look good too.
I love this song sooooooo much😍😍😍😍
I sang this in my School’s production. For some odd reason it was a duet with Simeon and Gad in mine. I was Simeon and after the show everyone told me how much they loved it
I always thought they were unfair to Benjamin. He genuinely cared about Joseph but likely would've also been sold if he'd taken his side. Joseph is cruel for threatening to punish them all by killing the most innocent man there, relatively.
Side note, Donny's poker face breaking is my favourite part of this scene 😂
He wasn’t actually going to kill him. He was testing the other brothers to see if they would stand up for him. Besides, considering they sold him into slavery, they deserve a good scare.
my CHILDHOOD
So pumped for this!! Im Judah in this, so excited
Notice how the second time Judah sings "Benjamin is an innocent man" he keeps his voice down!
We did this film for our school show this year
Tis is sooooo good
