Have you been affected by the border checks?
For the UK, they have become active just hours ago. I live in EUrope and i have seen that even small imports from the UK (things i used to buy via Ebay in the past) have become more expensive and take much longer.
The next customs office here is pretty far away, so i do not want to take the risk of having to go there to pick up something with a price of 10€.
I live in Southeast Kent, every time the brexit lorry queue piles up, I get stuck.
I have been in Ashford today, nearby that customs checks area, at peak times that area jams up on a daily basis - guess what happens if Dover sends all lorries them...
I've noticed a bit of an increase in people I know getting food poisoning.

@@-BY205 There are some checks on Australian meat, but far fewer because it's frozen. In terms of the paperwork (including health certificates), it's roughly the same.
There's also no problem with the time the checks take, as Australian beef and lamb travel more than 20 days to get to the UK. Another few hours don't matter.
Long-distance trade is qualitatively different, both in the types of products that are shifted and in the type of companies doing the trading.

@@pansepot1490 Ironically, quite a lot of the goods do face tariffs. Even when you trade goods that might qualify for zero tariffs, you might chose not to bother as proving that the goods qualify (with rules of origin papers) can be more expensive than the tariffs, or just too much work.
There is still a possibility 🎉 ECHR is investigating Ruzzian money connections and Tories want out from the ECHR because of that. When UK ends the membership in the ECHR then all of the agreements what the UK has with the EU becomes null and void 🎉 Then it is WTO time 🎉

This governments total imcompetence knows no bounds. They have had years to sort out these border checks, and despite telling us they were prepared for all eventualities, they have done bugger all. We knew these checks will be pretty much non existent, and Starmer needs to humiliate Sunak over this

I can't say that I'm sick of it, because I don't look at it like that. I was very upset after the Brexit vote. So I left the country to remain within the new borders of the EU. Now all my taxes are paid here. My employees are local people here. And the fate of British people is just comeuppance. I think they have a lot more learning to do yet. Much much more learning. So many people are still defending Brexit... even a much harder Brexit. If it weren't a shit-show of an abysmal failure, I'd have wasted my effort leaving, wouldn't I. Whereas actually I thank my good sense every day for getting the hell out. Just now I'm even buying a house here. Enjoy Brexit, Britain.

WTO rules. If I were a French cheese specialist sending product to UK I would take the hit and stop supplying the UK.
Many did. It's why international trade in dominated by large companies, international companies and import-export specialists (often product aggregators). It's a disadvantage for SME and leads to less choice and worse price-quality ratio.
French cheese specialist can sell the cheese to other countries like Canada because he can now use the tariff free quota that used to “belong” to UK.

Much as I don't wish ill on anyone, it is gratifying to see, as a Dutch person, that there are in fact many practical benefits to being in the EU.
Can we finally have an explanation from the govt why its has taken all this time and all these postponements to introduce the checks that the UK was duty bound to carry out...? How was it that Holland, France etc... were ready on day one..?!
Because UK politicians spent more time inventing nicknames, like remoaner, and mocking the EU for winning against it than preparing. They had 8 years to prepare, but chose to take victory laps.
The EU finished its full assessments on the consequences per sector in 2018. The UK civil service was not allowed to officially study it (some reports leaked), and was not allowed to start preparing in terms of people, infrastructure and other resources. All for political reasons.
That's why nothing was ready in 2019, when the EU finished its mad dash towards preparedness. And getting the infrastructure and other resources in place when things are already gunked up is harder to do. So political reasons created the disaster, but then it became much harder to fix - even where there was political will.

That figure of 25% of food in the UK being from europe is misleading, when it comes to fruit and veg is much higher and in the lean winter months almost all fresh food is from the EU

Labour can't reverse Brexit. The EU won't entertain the idea of UK rejoining unless both major parties are in favour of it. They don't ever want to deal with the UK leaving shortly after rejoining every time there is a change in government.

The UK hasn't been food self sufficient for centuries. Most of that time it could rely on its "empire" to provide the missing quantities of food. Once the empire gone it had the EU to trade with.
