- James Edward Ingram (February 16, 1952 - January 29, 2019) was an American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He was a two-time Grammy Award-winner and a two-time Academy Award nominee for Best Original Song.
Ingram, an Ohio native, got his start as a musician with the band Revelation Funk and later played keyboards for Ray Charles. He was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards, winning for best male R&B performance for his song "One Hundred Ways" in 1981 and best R&B performance for a duo or group in 1984 for "Yah Mo B There."
His duet with Patti Austin, "How Do You Keep the Music Playing," earned an Oscar nomination for best original song in 1983.
Ingram was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards -- one in 1994 for best original song for "The Day I Fall in Love" and again in the same category the following year for "Look What Love Has Done."
He co-wrote Michael Jackson's hit song "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" with Quincy Jones.
James Ingram visited the TopPop studios in Hilversum, the Netherlands twice in 1983.
He performed ‘Party Animal’ from his 1983 album ‘It’s Your night’ on 28 October 1983
Earlier that year, on 19 February 1983 he performed his duet with Patti Austin ‘Baby Come To Me’ for the TopPop cameras.
"Baby, Come to Me" is a love ballad from Patti Austin's 1981 album Every Home Should Have One, sung as a duet by Austin and James Ingram. It was written by Rod Temperton (formerly of Heatwave). The song was released as a single in April 1982, peaking at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, several months later the popular American soap opera General Hospital began to feature the song heavily, as the love theme for the character Luke Spencer. The single was re-released in October 1982, and reached #1 on the chart in February 1983.

Well,I'm a 64 yr old musician,& I'm finding that young people are hipper to old school music than I used to think.Had lunch recently with a friend at a nice bar/restaurant,they have pool tables,a young black couple were shooting pool, this song came on,& the young lady was ecstatic, dancing & singing along.Did my heart good.
Thank God some have good taste in Music.... The thing they cannot do is understand how it was in the 80s..the vibe...the times... this digital age is terrible it is distorting peoples minds and they rely on computers
You remember Luke and Laura
Truth be told, the R&B Artists of the '80s were GOD-sent.

No nudity, no lewd lyrics. Plain magical.
You got that right!
....and written by great songwriter. R.I.P. Rod Temperton (The same guy who wrote Rock With You, Thriller for MJ and once part of Heatwave.)
But a great arrangement. Nudity and lewd lyrics are often provided by artists who don't really have much ability, and are just sailing on the wave of popularity, like a lot of hip hop artists.
@@craigedwards2940 Arrange by MJ producer and engineered: Quincy Jones and Bruce Swedien respectively.

The 1980s had it all...style, panache, music and talent....the ultimate decade I'm glad to say I was part of...how I miss those days....
They sure don't make like this anymore...Pure gold
Noooo. Those days are gone unfortunately.
true
Soft, smooth, pure, clean, and honest feeling while singing
Viva the 80's ❤️🌹🎼
why cant we have music like this nowdays???
Capitalism has destroyed everything, including music
Because NOWADAYS young people don't know what it is to WRITE, ARRANGE, COMPOSE, SING etc. their own music and songs, its done for them and they don't like to work hard for what they want...the artists you like such as in this video had to be talented. Thank god for sound recordings and videos! The arrangement of this track is classic, it moves the soul. I remember going to the studio years ago to lay down tracks of music before vocals, its hard work, fun and rewarding but nevertheless hard work.

@@cm8836 You right
@@shevettejackson. sadly he is and far too young ! we lost a treasure.
I went to high school with Patti In Bay Shore, NY, and sat next to her in choir class taught by Miss Ough. In addition, I performed with her in couple musicals we put on in the high school auditorium. Not once have I ever heard her warble off-key, screech or whisper. The woman SINGS! She's hysterically funny and very humble. She was jetting off all over the world in the late 60s...winning international awards, going to Hollywood (if I remember correctly, Quincy Jones is her godfather) and never dropped names or bragged about it. Her parents were great people also. I saw her perform a number of years ago at a jazz club in Seattle and went backstage to say "hello" and we immediately started laughing and joking around as if we'd not been in touch for decades! She's a class act.
Wow that is wonderful to hear. She is an amazing singer and this is one of my favourite songs of all time
Wow how cool
Awesome!

James Ingram has a voice that gives me chills still to this day. Truly one of the greats.
There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them
I know what you mean.
You are not alone, I'm so grateful that my childhood memories were this pure and real.

Patti's humming at the 1:42 mark is the best part of the song. That vibe she puts off right there is so subtle but crazy sensual
Discovered James Ingram after the We Are The World documentary. I've been listening to his music nonstop since then, but this song is one of my favorites.

Thinkin' back in time
When love was only in my mind
I realize, ain't no second chance
You've got to hold on to romance
Don't let it slide
There's a special kind of magic in the air
When you find another heart that needs to share
Baby, come to me
Let me put my arms around you
This was meant to be
And I'm, oh so glad, I found you
Need you ev'ry day
Gotta have your love around me
Baby, always stay
'Cause I can't go back to livin' without you
Spendin' ev'ry dime
To keep you talkin' on the line
That's how it was
And all those walks together
Out in any kind of weather
Just because
There's a brand-new way
Of looking at your life
When you know that love
Is standing by your side
Baby, come to me
Let me put my arms around you
This was meant to be
And I'm oh so glad I found you
Need you ev'ry day
Gotta have your love around me
Baby, always stay
'Cause I can't go back to livin' without you
The nights can be cold
There's a chill to ev'ry evenin'
When you're all alone
Don't talk anymore
'Cause you know that I'll be here
To keep you warm
(Oh, darling keep me warm)
Baby, come to me
(Come to me)
Let me put my arms around you
This was meant to be
(My love)
And I'm oh so, glad I found you
(Oh, so glad I found you)
Need you ev'ry day

Gotta have your love around me

'Cause I can't go back to livin' without you

Oh my gosh - not only is James Ingram an incredibly talented artist and unbelievably paired well with Patti Austin - but an incredible human being - "believe in yourself and trust in God" I've heard him say. He's been faithful to his wife of 35 years, even though he's been in the spotlight, stating there is no brighter light than God's - Amen.
