    In this video, we test out the Denarq Twin Beech Mod, an upgrade to the Carenado Beechcraft 18. We'll be taking the aircraft on a flight from Milford Sound (NZMF), over to Gorge River Airstrip (NZQE) within Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS).
    The scenery enroute is absolutely stunning and Gorge River should make for a challenging landing, so buckle up and enjoy another outing in this vintage beauty!

    Hi!
    I'm the creator of this mod and just want to thank you for this amazing video. This is a flight I have to do. Very beautiful! Only one small correction. The flight model was completely redone. Very few code lines remain from original plane.
    Other than that, amazing video! Thanks alot!

      Hi Alexandre,
      Thank you ever so much, for all of your hard word with this excellent mod! Apologies regarding the flight model haha. I did go through the manual and thought I had caught all of the major changes, but must have missed something. I had assumed, that the updated weight and balance had corrected some of the Beech 18’s behaviours, but the aircraft certainly flies much more nicely now at any rate!
      I’m really glad you enjoyed the video. The flight is definitely worth giving a go!
      Once again, superb work! Cheers and all the best : )

  • @guyincognito8799
    @guyincognito8799 Před rokem +5

    You have to prime an R-985 if you want it to start on the first try. The primer goes to the cylinder. The boost pumps are supply line pressure only to the Carb.

    • @simprove
      @simprove Před rokem +1

      Yes, the Denarq manual says to use the primer during start. It fires first time for me.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před rokem

      Thanks for the pointer guy, I did wonder. . . I tend to quite religiously follow whichever checklist I am using at the time and that particular checklist called for priming *during* the start. I suspected that would give me a more successful outcome, but as I explained in the video, the primer in the Carenado Beech is a little bit fiddly and trying to juggle that with the rest of the start process, would have been rather tricky. So, I opted to forego priming, as I knew the engine would start on the 2nd attempt either way and it was also (inadvertently) a good way of showing the improvements in engine modelling.
      Cheers for the info though. Much appreciated and all the best : )

      The Beech 18 has always been a bit of tricky aircraft to master; the default flight model is rather iffy, which makes it more than a little difficult to get a decent takeoff / landing out of the aircraft. The Denarq mod radically overhauls the Beech’s flight model though, so you should find you’ll now be a Beech 18 expert ; )
      Cheers and all the best!

    Some nostalgic background music there, nice touch. This has been one of my favourite aircraft in the sim for some time now, particularly given that it lends itself to crystal clear graphics in VR more than some of the others on my system at least. I will install this mod the next time I load the game and look forward to seeing how the take off and landings improve (I think my best landing so far was only two bounces first lol). I really like this aircraft. Last Sunday, I joined a community event (50th Event by AndyanerTV - live stream here on CZcams). Two-thirds of the countless participants, including the organizer, flew the Twin Beech. It was fantastic, and I regretted leaving this aircraft untouched in the hangar for so long. However, it is quite challenging to land. Although I always manage to bring it down safely, it's not as smooth as I'd like it to be. It was reassuring to see that others also had their difficulties with it.

      I’ve always enjoyed the Beech 18 in MSFS, but tended no to fly it all that much, in part because the takeoff / landing characteristics were pretty unpleasant (it was almost impossible to get a smooth landing out of the aircraft haha). I hope someone makes a mod like this for the DHC-4 Caribou, it would be fantastic to get more temperamental characteristics for engine management and maybe some slight refinements to the flight modeling and sounds. Beautiful flight! The Beech D18 has a special place in my heart because it was the first, non-Cessna, aircraft I saw on our ERAU campus when I arrived at college in 1977. If I remember correctly, we used it during our A&P training to see how retractable landing gear worked. Then, later on in 1987, I was working at Eastern Airlines in Miami, FL (KMIA) and one of our company aircraft, a 727, had just finished being D-checked in our hangar. Because of the extent of the work, a test flight was required. At EAL, they didn't refer to them as "test flights" but rather as an LAF (local acceptance flight). As was tradition on nice days when nearby runways were in use, we mechanics would gather outside of the hangar to watch the LAF aircraft take off. This particular day, our aircraft was number 2 behind a Beech D18. We watched the Beech takeoff roll but, instead of departing normally, it left the ground and almost immediately pitched straight up. Of course it could not sustain flight like that so it stalled, rolled, crashed and exploded taking the lives of the pilot and copilot. In the next year or so, we had heard that it was carrying newspapers and magazines to one of the islands and that the cargo had shifted causing the CG to be much too far aft. Of course there was no public Internet in those days, and the explanation was plausible, so I always figured that is exactly what happened. Upon watching your video today, I decided to check out the NTSB accident reporting website. Not a very detailed NTSB report, but the actual cause of the accident turned out to be that the aircraft was 955 lbs over gross with a CG that was 14.5 inches aft of the aft limit. In addition, the weight & balance paperwork had been altered to show the CG was within limits. According to the report, the Part 135 operator, and the PIC, had been cited multiple times for various FAR violations. The report can be found at app.ntsb.gov/pdfgenerator/ReportGeneratorFile.ashx?EventID=20001213X32137&AKey=1&RType=Final&IType=FA

    Thank-you for your quick flight through New Zealand’s Gorge Valley in the Beach 18. I am Guerry from the States. Furthermore, I am brand new to MSFS and this channel. So I look forward to gaining knowledge of available addons from you and those leaving comments, as I thoroughly enjoy this channel with its concise yet very informative reviews of aircraft.
    For the aircraft in the review and in your written introductory information, could you please put a link that sources the aircraft’s POH? I’m certain I could find it through my own search. But it would save me a lot of time from reading whatever that has nothing to do with my search. Personally, I enjoy reading POH’s in order to understand the “why” things are done in the manner the narrator does them in the review.
    The scenery for your flight was stunningly spectacular in my opinion. I thought the aircraft was well depicted, and I am glad to see that it was shown in new condition. I loved how everything darkened with the threatening clouds, and I liked how the turf affected the ground performance of the aircraft. I could tell that you were enjoying the fun flight for the sake of flying in beautiful terrain. I believe that I too would enjoy flying through the gorge as I replicated your flightpath. But, did you turn off the weather effects related to mountain flying? Although I have never done any mountain flying, from what I’ve read it is very rare to have the smooth conditions in which you flew. But, I’m not complaining but only making an observation.
    The only other thing I noticed, especially when you ducked under the dark cloud was that the engine instrument lights were not illuminated. At first, I thought that was something wrong with the addon, but with a flip of the switch later, you answered my concern.
    Initially, I had more notes about which I desired to comment. However, after reading those left by others, they did cover the topics that I thought were noteworthy.
    In all, I enjoyed the video and look forward to your next review. Thank-you again for sharing.

      Hi C-990,
      Welcome to the channel and indeed, MSFS! I’m really glad you enjoyed the flight and that you’re enjoying the content more generally also : )
      Your request, regarding linking to a POH, is obviously a very reasonable one however, I’m afraid I tend not to do that anymore, as I was finding that when I did link resources, they were quite often taken down shortly thereafter (I presume as a result of a significant number of downloads). Not wanting to lose such resources altogether, I don’t generally link them anymore but, I’m always happy to recommend them on an individual basis. That being said, so far as the Beech 18 goes, I was simply using a checklist from Flightsim.to.
      The scenery was indeed stunning and for me, this was a flight were MSFS really shone (I’m glad that came across in the video - I had great fun haha).
      My absolute pleasure on the video and I look forward to seeing you again some time soon. Cheers and all the best!

If you want to figure out where to pick up the river, perhaps fly the river section in reverse the first time (departing from Gorge River) and you can see where you’ll need to cut in from the coast, towards the hills. Hello Gumper (and NG),
      The manual is a “must-read” for the Denarq mod. It sounds like you probably haven’t topped up the engine oil, which is most likely what’s causing your oil pressure issues and quickly inducing an engine failure? It’s worth persevering with the mod, since it’s a very rewarding experience overall (the sounds alone are worth it, as you point out) and the Beech isn’t too tricky to manage, once you have its operation figured out. Hello Magnus,

Is the aircraft not trimming at all, or you just can’t get it trimmed into a stable condition? The main things that spring to mind; have you checked your weight and balance and also made sure you have your sim’s flight model set to “Modern”? Both of those could be causing issues I suppose. Without knowing more details, I’m afraid I’m not really sure what could be causing the problem. . .

      Hello Jonathan, my pleasure on the video.
      That sounds like either an oil pressure issue, a carb icing issue, or a spark plug fouling issue. Check the fuel and load manager, to make sure that your engine oils are topped up. If it’s carb icing, then apply the carb heat until any icing has cleared and if it’s spark plug fouling (though I don’t recall if that has been modelled), run the engines at a higher power setting, until the plugs are cleared.

      Like in real aviation, checking oil quantity should be part of your pre-flight check list. To fill tanks you need to pull L/R Oil shutoff levers, with plane stopped and engines off. Once done, you can adjust L/R oil tanks sliders. Then, just push oil shutoff levers in and you are ready to go.

      I can’t speak for everyone, but there are a couple of reasons that I’ve stuck with 1080p to date: 1) I only own a 1080p monitor 2) It allows for a higher frame rate / smoother experience within the sim 3) I did actually poll my viewers and the majority are still watching vids in 1080p. Hi Nexe,
      Well, the Beech 18 is a product in its own right and like any product, one can choose whether or not they think it’s worth a punt. The default Beech is far from perfect but to be fair, it’s pretty cheap and does work properly in the broad sense (it’s perfectly useable without the Denarq mod). Of course, in an ideal world Carenado would have completed the aircraft to this modded standard, but that’s never been their “style”, so I think it’s brilliant that Denarq has given us this superb upgrade!
      That’s my take on it anyway, hope it makes sense. All the best : )

    Gorge River with a twin? The real airstrip is really rugged, small and very narrow, much more then that of the sim that is nice but rather iconic. It exist to bring food to the family that live there, not more. There are no road so the small airstrip is the only way they have to have contact with the rest of the world. Not so nice...There is a video of the son of the two husband and mother living there but... they bring him home with a Piper Cub, not with a twin. Simmers are very optimistic about the aircrafts possibility. The real Beech 18 need large, well mantained airstrips to land safely. It is not a stol. However nice video, on sim nobody risk his life. 😊

I'm from the States and very new to MSFS as well as this channel. Furthermore, I have absolutely no knowledge regarding this area. My father used to fly our family in and out of some harrowing, mountainous locations in our Rocky Mountains in his Turbo C337. As I was his favorite copilot at 10 years old, he would detail the aircraft's capabilities and limitations to me as well as the environmental conditions (weather, terrain, effects on flying, etc.).

      @@Guerry-3 I am a glider pilot in real life, but I also fly a superdimona turbocharged touring moto glider. I also have friends that fly GA and we go in holydays with airplanes all around Europe. There is big difference between flyjng in the USA or in another country. In the USA everything is big, here in Switzerland (but also in Europe as a whole) the average runway is 700 800 mt long it is hard to find an airport with more then one runway. In the USA you have huge uncontrolled airports with places for 400 airplanes or more. Turning back to NZ, like Idaho (as example) there are many small runway like this one and if you want fly there is better a high wing single engine GA. In fact there is a reason if you see many high wing Cessna in NZ. The reason is that a low wing aircraft can be damaged by flying debries when you land in a dirty, rugged backcountry airstrip. Not all airplanes have sturdy undercarriage and this is the reason for wich there are specific aircraft and undercarriage and wheels for the backcountry. My suggestion is to look at video published on YT to see what aircraft to use . The Beech is a rare bird and fly only for airshow in big airports, mostly with paved runway or at least in airstrip that are perfectly mantained and regular, with mowed grass. Gorge River in reality is terrible, really dangerous uneven and very narrow and wiith the ocean wind to complicate your landing abd take off. There is a video on YT about a landing there with a little Piper Cub, not with powerful twin like the Beech 18 . With the Beech there you cut your wings, broke undercarriage and probably your career end in the ocean.

      @@antonioiozzi291: Thank-you for your reply. I hope when you visited my country, you were treated courteously. Furthermore, I thank-you for writing in English, and your English is better3 than most who speak it natively.
      You mentioned one thing that those who do not live in North America do not realize. The United States (and Canada) is not just big. It is absolutely huge. Actually, unless someone has not driven from the Atlantic to the Pacific in the United State, along the northern border, driven along the Pacific coast and crossed back to the east along the southern border, and then back north along the Atlantic to their starting point (in the continental area), no one realizes how huge it is. I am not bragging but merely stating a fact.
      You are absolutely correct when it comes to having uncontrollable airspace and room for long runways. Flying in the US is very forgiving, until one gets into our mountainous areas. But with an aircraft with moderate endurance, one in general aviation could very well fliy from coast to coast without filing a flight plan and never speaking to a control tower.
      By the way, I love to watch sail planes orbiting very high above me. Again, thank-you for your reply. Good luck with your flying and be safe.

    YOU DIDN' T DO AN ENGINGE RUNUP!! Your are required to run both engines up, check the magnetos, cycle the props 3 times, and check the prop feathering pumps. You did none of this! No qualified Beech 18 pilot would ever miss these steps in the pre-takeoff check list.
