I had a coworker who, when he found out I was a watch guy, proudly showed me his Movado. He was so proud of it I just said, "cool!" If he likes it, that's all that matters.
Yes, I'd never break anyone's heart like that. You did the right thing. One day he might find out on his own.
Agreed I do the same thing. The older Movados were awesome though, sucks they fell off a cliff.
To be fair vintage movado is great
I'm a watch guy. I like Movado.
@@funkmonthat’s the only reason to buy a watch, damn what anyone else says. If you love it wear it.
Ok, so for starters I can't tell you which watches to like or not. All I will say is this, make sure you have your facts correct before bashing a watch name. The Gevril brand has been around long before you and I were born. The founding father Jacques Gevril started making watching in the 1700s. So no this is not some QVC pop up brand or copycat of other watch brands. This was a very harsh thing to say about three generations of hard work and craftsmanship to making quality watches. The Gevril brand is actually highly regarded and handcrafted by high end Swiss watch makers and that has been the case since 1990. Please do your homework and be more informed before you begin to try and inform others about your opinions. With respect, have a good day.
Rolex. Seen the ridiculous prices lately? You should avoid playing that game.
That Gevril homage to an IWC pilot's chrono looked great.
My first luxury watch was a new Baum and Mercier “ Hampton “ that I bought new 31 years ago and it still works perfectly and looks amazing as if it is brand new and designed yesterday.
I have added Rolexes and cartiers among others since then but I love the B&M the most.
I get calls from friends all the time asking about watches. Crappy watches do such a better job at marketing than Tissot , Orient and Hamilton to name a few.
That's true, all the money spent goes into marketing and paying so called influencers. They don't have any budget for the watch itself. Things are changing a bit though. Seiko and the new Seiko 5 , or 5kx as they call them are a huge hit with younger people so hopefully they'll start learning what makes a decent watch.
@@brianmsahin I have never seen any young guy at work with a Seiko. Casio and Apple. That is about it DW and Mvmt are not cool at the moment.
Filipo Loretti, and Vincero would be my first "Think twice before buying" watches.
I will note Vincero is more of a mixed bag these days. They do have some mechaquartz watches that do hold up against similar watches, but there are definitely cheaper options.
I have some Gevril watches including a GV2 , They have solid cases and keep excellent time. Seems the mark down from $3600 to $600 dollars would make sense for a homage. But, its a Swiss homage --not Chinese homage Submariner...I love my Gevril Wall Street homage -Quality shines!
I just got the Gevril Wall Street and it was in the $700s. It’s honestly a very nice watch and it has a good weight to it. I don’t think they are worth the MSRP price, but for under $800 it’s a watch that will last a long time
Exactly, his knowledge of the Gevril brand is off anyway so no wonder he put them on this list.
I own a Gevril wall street and it's extremely well made and accurate . A lot of their designs I don't like, but the wall street is great. At 43 mm it is larger than the submariner and the crown is different as is the case back. Talking of the crown it's one of the best I have encountered.
@@dalegamble1173 I know I'm late in the game here, but I agree 100%. I love my Gevrils (zhivrle for the host). The Wall Street is absolutely gorgeous and receives triple the compliments over my Date Just. People literally say, "Oh, It's a Rolex." When I wear the Gevril, Tissot, Edox, Mido, Orient Star, Hamilton, Longines; people tend to ask about the watch. "What's that?" They are much more of a conversation starter than a Rolex. When I wear the Rolex, most people assume it's fake. I wear my Tudor Black Bay, and people think it's a Rolex knockoff. Don't get me wrong, some people are entirely impressed with the Rolex. Those are the people I usually turn on to one of these other brands, so they have something that keeps time very well, looks amazing, is comfortable, and you don't have to be worried if you end up changing a tire on the side of the highway, or that someone is going to rob you.
A part II...? You'll probably have to make a whole mini series for Netflix to cover it. Filipo Loretti, Vincero, Valuchi, plus there are a bunch of other "minimalist" brands designed by people famous for everything from designing Scandinavian furniture to interior designers and architects, all total sxxt. Saw one recently for a Norwegian company. The wonderful design was a white dial, 2 black hands, run by a 3 dollar quartz movement.....selling for €200. There were no pips or numbers so they didn't have to worry about alignment. The problem is that many people just don't know what makes a good watch and they're easily fooled into paying two, three, four hundred dollars and more for a 10 dollar watch made in a Chinese sweat shop. Of course that doesn't affect people seeing as the biggest selling mobile phone, the iPhone is also produced in Chinese sweat shops! People need to be re-educated about what makes a good watch, but unfortunately the big brands are not making the effort on this. It's good to see that you and other genuine people are highlighting this.
Interesting, a couple of these brands I have never heard of, well researched 👍
Great list. Would love to see a Part 2
Useful list for those looking to get into watches. Not sure I would have lumped B&M with the other travesties, but I see your point.
A gevril Wall Street sells sub $500 on the gray market on the regular. It’s a nice watch, probably as close to a real submariner for under a 1000 you will ever get. but here this guy is knocking it. Same guy probably will praise a Seiko 5 gmt as being a value for entry level. And how do you not include Invicta in this video?
highly educational review, thank a lor mate!
Good one. The fall of both Movado and Baume & Mercier make me a bit sad, as they both had some amazing pieces back in the day.
The "fall of Movado"- 100% Swiss made to this day... 🤡
I would stick up for Movado because it's such an entry watch. The iconic Museum is what got me into watch collecting and was my first nice watch - of course, I got the automatic classic Museum.
No they made great watches in the past and they still make some pretty cool watches as well today. However a lot of their watches are sort of those ones that you see at the mall with the quartz movement that are priced a little too high for what they actually are... Thanks for the comment!
Think this guy is a Watch Snob?
In my early days, before I knew what I was doing, I had a gevril. I managed to sell it. Also had 2 Invictas and a Versace Madison. Sold em all. The Madison however was well made and had a eta 2893 base with a chrono module on top. And the worst one was a “Jacques Lemans” pilot watch and it was bought off of tv lmao. Ahh the good ol days....I’ve exorcised all of the junk from my collection and now it’s just a Seamaster 2255.80, Breitling Chronomat(old caliber 13), Glycine combat diver as a daily, and a few G-SHOCKS
I love Movado's museum design. I bought it solely for how it looks. 😊
The problem here is what is a crappy brand exactly? Higher end brands that brainwash people into thinking their products are exponentially superior to others due to their outrageous prices in my opinion are crappy. Is it the brands marketing campaign that makes it better. I think it’s easy to pick on low hanging fruit but harder to come to grips with higher end brands that are also crappy in their own right.
Bought an open heart Gevril for about $300, love it.
Brilliant, especially what you said about Diesel.
Good to know, haven't heard of some of these.
I love my Schild theodor but I'd love to hear more on the schild brand.
my 4 watches. Samsung galaxy for working out, Patek Phillip all gold 2010, Rolex datejust from 85 all gold and Omega seamaster cerra gold from 2020.
Very comprehensive, covering a good range of brands that do watches a disservice
I have a Gevril love the blue mother of pearl on it and diamonds- have no issues with the movement it's comfortable to wear and love the deploy clasp.
I am a diver and I own a dive school. There are a lot of brands that release models that they claim to be divers. LMAO! They are dive styles at best.
What is the deepest you ever gone?
Very true Jake! You have to be careful, but don't you make sure that your people all wear dive computers now for insurance and safety?. I dive a lot myself and everybody uses the computers. We all have dive watches of course, it's part of the lifestyle but nobody I know dives with them anymore. It's good to see someone still does!!
Don’t most divers use g shocks nowadays?
@@mistermood4164 No, it's normally dive computers for serious diving ,and diving clubs usually insist on people wearing them because of insurance liability and health and safety reasons, mostly insurance, as liability insurance policies insist on them being used.
@@PepeDeezNutz, back when I was in UDT. However, most of the charges we set weren't as deep as you would think. Basically just deep enough to blow a gun boat to kingdom come. 😉
Movado gets a lot of hate due to monopolizing the museum piece design to the extent it’s practically their entire line. They are not bad watches for quartz movements but your paying a hefty premium for the “design”
I have 3 of them and love them . Just when the battery died out get battery changed don't leave watches with dead batteries in them.
Never had a problem with them.
Thank you, I was looking at a Gevril for purchase at what I thought was a great price… Now I can put my mind at ease and pass on it..
the guy is dead wrong about Gevril. He must have some grudge or just complete ignorance
Damn Chris you hurt me with the Baume et mercier on this list but it is what it is and a lot of their watches are not selling well or heavily discounted, but I will say that’s beneficial for those who couldn’t normally afford a 2k watch. They still have some decent watches like the Clifton and classima
I agree with you on Baume & Mercier. I would also add Epos and Hublot. The latter two have many issues as well as hits and misses.
I definitely agree with you.
Gevril has been around since 1758 and homage aside, they are of great quality and value.
The history of Gevril watches is a story that combines an illustrious watchmaking past with an innovative modern revitalization. The company origins date back to the mid-18th century and Jacques Gevril, the gifted Swiss watchmaker who is the founder and inspiration of the eponymous brand. Gevril didn't just pop up in the last 15 years.
Have to say Gevril isn't just some homage brand it started in 1787, but was bought by a separate watch company in 2001, and their "avenue of americas" is actually quite desirable. Most watches will depreciate in value, that's normal. Only a small handful of watches are considered investments and if you're paying under 10k for a watch, you don't have any investments, not truly.
I own a Gevril Wall Street and my buddy has a Rolex date just. In terms of quality and finish, I can't justify spending 5k more on the rolex
i have a 58mm diesel watch, but sometimes its hard to read on my biceps.
Well, where to begin: Michael Kors, DKNY, Invicta, Michele, Tag Heuer(at least at retail), Hublot, and maybe Shinola, just off the top of my head. Great video Chris!
Haters for some of these watches really don't understand as this is area is highly subjective to personal taste and lifestyle. I have a couple of these brands that have lasted me more than 15 years with no issues so as long as you like the watch and it's working for your needs that's to shabby. If your thinking along lines of investment and resell that's a whole nother area.
“They are enormous but they are also ugly” whoo man the way you said it 😂I spit choked
What a shame about Baume mercier!! That's a historic brand, and they make awesome and great quality watches. I purchased a Clifton Club Chronograph on the grey market for way under their MSRP. Saw them pretty close to their MSRP in some AD's, but a different story on the grey market. I think that the Richemont Group drop the ball on this brand, and basically let them go under. Well, on the bright side, for those who want a great quality watch and don't care about re-sale value, this is the way to go.
Well put! 👍👍
Thank you! 👍
Great content bro ...just one question please ...why are gervil watches all on apparently on 80% sale ...is that just a false marketing stratergy...watches there were 4grand are being priced at £600
I'm surprised you didn't put Invicta on this list lol, your thoughts on Rado Swiss brand cuz no one really reviews their timepieces.
Invicta Is not completely worthless. Most of them are but not 100%. Rado is superb but they are the same as mido, brands that are from swatch group, low tier, popular in south america and asia. Mido has the cheapest auto chronometer possible, rado has ceramic cases (un scratch able)
Every single model besides the pro diver is gaudy, ugly, and worthless.
So I suppose they aren’t “completely” worthless haha. They got 1 model right!
@@danieleraso1 Invicta only has 1 good model
Ok I'll obviously a bit new to the terminology... What's the gray market?
whaoou.... I find it a bit harsh to have Baume et Mercier in the middle of these horrible other watches :)
as you mentioned it's a luxury brand and they have had iconic models I think
cheers
Yes I agree it is harsh but unfortunately they aren't doing so well and if you purchase one at retail I think it's a very big mistake...
While i agree with your assessment, i believe there are other scammers on the market. Let's name just two highly overpriced brands; Rolex en Richard Mille. If we agree that Diesel makes ugly pieces, RM is just as tasteless..
Gevril has been around since 1785 lol. They have a pretty long and storied history actually. Did you even check that with some research before stating they are only 10 years old?
They actually don't. They were out of business for about 30 years and then someone bought the name that have absolutely no relation to the original watch company. So their history actually ended a long time ago. This brand has nothing to do with the original.
@@WatchChris still doesn’t matter even if it was in other person hands. still a real Brand been out for very long time. So what is your point or issue here. i’ve been in Switzerland and I saw and pass by the factory with my own eyes,
so it’s 100% Swiss made. Before u say something do your homework cuz u still don’t even know what are you talking about 👍
It's hard to disagree that Mr. Daddy looks ridiculous, still I own DZ4246 and it's of the most comfortable watches I ever had. There's a little weight, wide strap and just perfect shape. It's original price was about 200$, I bought it pre-owned for 100$ and it lasts for almost 10 years now. Of course, there's basic quartz Miyota movement inside, but they also don't charge a thousand dollars for it
The Romain Jerome spacecraft watch 2:45 is actually a good looking watch. I kinda like it. Imho.
Swiss military by chrono. Opinion on that please.
Interesting video, subscribed, Regards, Giorgia Mondani.
Giorgia Mondavi! I am very honored that you found my video interesting. You and your family have contributed so much to watch collecting. It means a lot to me that you found my video interesting! Thank you for subscribing!!
Jacques Lehman, Bruno Sohnle, and Epos.
Do you have any opinions on NIXON ?
Don’t forget Gevril’s sister brand, GV2! Others I’d say are: Dan Wellington, Deep Blue (horrible NH36 movement - I sold mine after 2 weeks, plus there’s the 40% discount so you should never pay full price), MTM (horribly overmarketed but underengineered mostly quartz “military style” watches often costing >$1,000)
Dang I have 2 DeepBlue TT-100s on the way 😕. I am new to watches and still trying to learn as much as possible.
@@sinisterATXif you like it it don’t matter at the end of the day. I don’t know why men look to other men on what the should wear.
@@Pirategod23 Agreed
What about Ballast watches? Any good?
I went into a shinola watch store...the overall quality of these reminded me of fossil or diesel watches
The Gevril Wallstreet pre owned is going for about $500, some new have hit $1000 on the grey market. I wouldn’t call that next to nothing.
I feel bad you included ‘Baume et Mercier’ in this list ! 😢
I have a Movado... only one place in town would replace the battery... it's sent " away "...60 days later I get it back... the time is set wrong.. again it has to get sent out... I get it back.. 2 weeks later it stopped working. Done with.... Movado
I would still wear most of the Gevril, it is a good looking watch, most of them.
Gevril makes a great watch. I don’t agree with his review here. They do have high retail prices but you can get them discounted and the quality is excellent.
Same
Yeah they are good looking watch ! i wear squalo. potente .!! they are ltd.. I don't agree with this guy review?? he stupid..
Same here. I have the Walk Street and it’s a great watch. I rather pay $700-$800 for it than $10-20k for the respective Rolex.
@@elarson312I went to Switzerland 2 weeks ago. I definitely saw geveril factory when I was walking around so. It’s 💯 solid brand and Swiss👍
Got my 2 Gevril for a couple hundred bucks (MSRP $3500 and $2500) supposedly… but I got them for less than a total of $400 for both lol
Some are terrible, others kind of cool in a way. If collectors all liked the same things it would get boring fast. What do you think of Electricianz watches? A bit gimmicky but I cant get enough of them.
I think Electricianz watches look awesome. And I like the gimmick. It's different and I always support that. I want to get one in for review soon
I didn't think those Diesel's were all that "ugly". The colors could have been a little more muted--but the overall design looked okay for what they were. Unfortunately no one wants a watch the size of a pancake.
A lot of those fashion brands' watches are not made or designed by them. they actually license their brand out to another company that designs and sells those watches under the specific brand's name. example gucci licensed their brand to third party company that make and design gucci watches, these watches are not related to gucci at all except their brand name. Similar to their eyewears which is design and sell by other company.
The Diesel watch names made me laugh lol
What do you think of the Electricianz watches?
Thats what i was wondering.
My wife bought me a movado and it s the watch that means most to me because of her, could care less what anyone thinks about it,it's a beautiful watch imo
Too bad about the B&M watches cause they look pretty good
I forgot to mention, the Gevril wall street is iso certified.
Invicta, Swiss Legend, and Luminox, Dare I say it? Seiko. How can this company put out some of the best watches, yet also put out junk that has no QC.
What do you think about Oblvlo brand?
Try explaining your viewpoint on Diesel watches to teenagers
Lol yes... I have adult friends who don't agree with me..
@@WatchChris 🤣🤣
Diesel is still around?
I got into watches as a teenager and even then I found diesel really ugly
Fashion watches ruined the looks of many nice dress watches for me.
🔥“Mr. Daddy” 🔥
Lol
@@WatchChris watching this video while wearing my movado lol 😂😎👍 also I have a question the movado I have is a $1,500 quartz movado and I wanted to know if you knew what makes this one more expensive than the cheaper quartz movados :) 😎👍
I think you are mistaken about Baum et Mercier. The company is strong and getting stronger. Baum is a new company that they started recently. Affordable and quality made!
DUDE!!!! You have not put baume & mercier on the same list as diesel 💀 I'm almost speechless. Please take it back..... TAKE IT BACK CHRIS
Nixon and DW would probably be two others. I’ve owned neither but they seem kind of low quality for their $100+ price tags
I’m a Gucci watch victim. My husband gave it to me for our anniversary years ago. That watch died within 6 months. Unfortunately because my husband got it from Macy’s he didn’t purchase a warranty on it…very unusual of him. Anyway, I’ve spent $150 each year on that watch to have it serviced because it dies ALL the time but because I love how it looks, I just can’t let it go! 😮 I have to take it to a bourgeois watch shop to have this done where a connoisseur handles the repair. They’ve explained the technical issues with it but like I said I can’t let it go.
Where's link to part 2?
Disagree, Movado watches are classic, thin, comfortable and recognizable and don't be such a snob nothing wrong with quartz watches. You can get these for not much money and Swiss Made does mean something. Disagree about Baume& Mercier too. I have the stainless steel Capland chrono and it is one the best made watches I own. It is solid, beautiful and it works flawlessly. It has its caliber of the Valjoux 7750, which is one of the very best chrono movements ever made and I know I can sell it for what I paid for it. So what's the problem if you can get them for a good price to begin with then there really is no big hit when you want to sell it. These watches rival watches that cost much more.
I also agree 👍
Thoughts on Waldor and Co??
That's what I'd like to know
I'm confused about the Gevril brand. I bought a GV2 motorcycle themed watch. It's very nice. But - since I never heard of it I thought "decent swiss brand a step up from edox?" Maybe? Then I saw the price fluctuations. I thought I bought a fake. Ebay has an authentic guarantee selection and all are 1k+ - this cost me 300 second hand. I really can't tell because it's nice solid heavy. Silent. Etc. Gevril. Huh.
Thoughts on Armand Nicolet?
Never reviewed them they look good but I'm not sure about the quality.... I would love to have one on the channel.
I just got the Jss9 gmt & J09 chrono,at very good price , I can honestly say the build quality is excellent on these & the design are very cool for me ,their up there with Oris Longine ... better imho
Nomos is very expensive at retail and at resale you loose a lot of money.
Yes very true. However I do feel they make very attractive watches..
But good quality and that’s also a factor
I own 2 versions of the Gevril Columbus Circle 2000B. Ridiculous MSRPs like Invicta, but interesting dials powered by ETA 2834-2. While I am not a fan of the brand I held on to these.
Totally agree about diesel watches completely hideous 👍🇬🇧
I love the fact that every one of these higher end watch reviewers always sh*t on the same 2 brands in unison. MVMT & Vincero
I have 120 watches in my collection I buy what I like and I don't base my selection of a watch on resale value my selection is base on movements which are all Swiss automatic and mechanical movements, Buy what you like.
Picking on this brand isnt fair
Most Gevril watches have SW 200 movements and are extremely well made.
Just look for best deals as with any watch purchase...isnt hard.
Gevril with SW200, and great build quality...so, no different than Tudor...
I was looking at a diesel skeleton watch but it had a plastic band. Glad I didn’t buy it.
One of the first that should be on the list should have been bulova. Expensive to buy but would lose minutes daily. I sent it to be repaired. It got worse I would lose 3-4 minutes a day. I tried to return it to the store I bought it at (this was after only 1 week of owning it than 3 weeks of repair time.)
They refused to give me my money back. Claiming I only had a 1 month return policy.
Got a Citizen with eco-drive when a macys was closing a shop down for 1/3 the price. I think it was originally sold for around $800 retail.
Chris I’m surprised you didn’t mention Invicta. Although Invicta was my gateway watch brand into the madness of collecting LOL 😂 I’ll still think overall they for the most part are garbage 🗑 I do still have three Invicta’s that are Swiss automatic watches that are actually decent watches but if I could sell them and get close to what I paid for they’d be gone .
I had the 0353 for years and loved it as I had it as a gift.... but that front glass would always shatter and brake over time... and those bands were such trash.
I went to look at their other styles. Its like deisel...ugly
@@Matanumi I only buy Seiko, Orient and Gshock now . I do still own an Invicta 9937 , and a 3076 scooby. Both are Swiss automatic with sapphire crystal but I refuse to spend another dime on a Invicta.
Invicta gears a bad wrap but they make excellent everyday watches .made stainless steel water resistant and they make many styles that compliment many peoples lifestyle they don't make just big watches they go from 28mm to70mmwhatever you want. As for myself a have several automatics and swiss quartz movements that I have for over 15 years with no issues no cracked dials none of that people that are careless break things and then blame it on the watch. I have no issues and Invicta to be a good Brand. With my sometimes daily usage
@@horaciolinares8597 I still own a few myself and they are still working fine as well 👍🏻.
Their pro and grand divers especially swiss reserve ones are great
Where is jacob and co? Where is hublot?
Diesel watches were made for middle school boys. The inner child in me can remember when I would think that was cool.
I'm all about the savings, and Monocashback just delivered for only $8. And with a 50% discount and an extra $1 in cashback, it's a no-brainer. I'm one happy shopper!
Vintage Movados are great.
I will add few more to the list: Mido, Hamilton, Tissot, Fredrique Constant, Skagen, Coach, Michael Kors, Alpina, Stuhrling, Versace....
In my opinion two underappreciated brands that offer great quality for price are Rado & Victorinox.
Hmmm so very subjective comments on which brands that should be on the list ...my opinion is buy what you like.buy what is comfortable to you financially and of course do not pay retail when ever possible..I started collecting invictas and not one has let me down especially the 200 mm prodiver autos .those seiko N35s are workhorses which brings back to Deep blue I just bought one used less than what i paid for my skx007 seiko which I cherish..yet the my Deep blue has more spec and has equal build quality..there are crappy watches across the spectrum and price points..just my two cents
I'm far from new buying watches. I love Movado. I buy what I like. Part of the fun? Driving the watch police crazy.
Yes. ✊🏼
Tag Heuer great but buy used and avoid the Formula ! Monaco all day! .. best buy in my opinion are the Rolex Cellini used solid 18K rose or white gold can be had for $3000 all day on ebay Think its funny when someone says its not going to last very long even the cheapest invicta watch will be around longer than any of us! ..
Movado has fans but not me.
There is no such thing as an ugly watch, or an overpriced watch. A watch is only worth what a person is willing to pay for.
People put rolex up there on a pedestal like its the holy grail of watches, but i personally think its one of the most ugliest and overpriced piece of junk out there. I'm not willing to dish out 5 to 20 grand for a rolex, but the next guy would not have a problem buying it because he believes it's "worth the money."
If I were to spend Rolex money on a watch, I'd just get a Grand Seiko.
